The youths of the 1950 ' s were engulfed with the bobby socks look; the 1960 ' s and 70 ' s were dec- ades of hippies and flower children. It Is now 1985. and America ' s youth have not yet grasped a single Image that can be readily Indentlfled with their generation, (except for rebellious). Today ' s youth have a wider selection of styles to choose from, thanks to the most powerful media device, (for better or worse) ever built. The 1980 ' s Is the decade of video. It Is an era In which fads and trends have shorter lifespans than the average moth. Creating the right visual Image Is almost a neccesslty In today ' s world; many teenagers follow a trend that their friends have chosen Just to fit In. while other ' s opt for their own Individual look. Today. Just as It was fifty years ago. performers have an Immense Influence on the youth of America. All one has to do today Is turn on the T.V.. and he will be bombarded with various people flaunting their fashion statements. Originally. MTV was the k primary showcase of trends and fashions, but now T.V. shows such as Miami Vice , are jumping on the bandwagon. Let ' s take a closer look at some of the 80 ' s biggest fads and trend- setters. Madonna has niade lln- gere not only accept- able, but also fash- ionable. She along with ' •  - P r I n Shiela Sheena Easton, and others are including suggestive lyrics in their music. .. , . , ,. . Another wave, led by David Lee Roth and Cindl Lauper. is making ' outrageous clothes stylish. Bright colors, numerous accesorles. and hair that looks as if it were electrocuted are the easily Identifiable traits of this fad. . .u . . .k Depeche Mode, the Thompson Twins, and the Cure are the major contributors to the Neuro look ; I.e. baggy clothes and the GQ look. U-2 and Teats for Fears helped bring long hair and ov .coats back into (ashlon, while Frankle Goes to Hollywood and Wham! are fads within themselves with baggy white T-shirts, which carry a phrase or slogan of the band , and floures- cent clothes. A feeling of patriotism, along with faded Jeans, was made vogue by Bruce Springsteen. Sport jackets worn over pastel colored T-shirts and no socks Is a style given to us from T.V. ' s Miami Vice. It Is next to Impossible to list all of the (ads of the 80 ' s. since many people still wear styles of the previous dec- ades, such as hippy, heavy metal, mod. punk, preppy, and (gasp) even the Brady Bunch look. So far. the 80 ' s has proved that the only certain- ty is change itself. While this doesn ' t provide much stability, it does make things Inter- esting, and proves that, yes, it is a mat- ter of style. ALMA MATER Our Loyalty, La Quinta Forever goes to you We stand beside you always For your spirit true Oh Aztecs fight forever For the Gold and Blue Hail La Quinta High School We ' ll always honor you Two examples of La Quinta ' s wide range of styles i. I ' K V ' i t 1 i f ' -y- ' l, :4t M They ' re not going out, they ' re Just friends. This year, Cool Dude and Mr. Spirit were just a few motivational events to involve La Quinta ' s stu- dent body. The Sadie Hawkin ' s Dance, sponsored by the sophomores, was an event that was held this year. A man for all seasons Bill Struven Friendship comes in various forms. Stephanie Jung and Kristen Harkins are members of La Quinta Cross Country Team. Their friendship extends beyond the track as they take pride in each oth- er ' s accomplishments. Lunchtime is a time spent with friends, but some prefer to spend their thirty min- utes working with certain clubs or organi- zations. Anywhere and anytime, on campus or off, Az- tecs got into the spirit of high school life. We proved that we have a life beyond the books, if we can ' t beat the system, we Aztecs tried to make the best of it. Enthusiasm and spir- it proved to be a driving force in the outcome of the roar of laughter echoing throughout the halls at La Quinta. Having spirit here on La Quinta ' s campus means more than getting dressed-up or going to the game. Here, the Aztecs show their everyday pride and joy in their school by simply showing off their SMILES! ym , ' M, «r %L S ' - LA - ' When lunchtitne rolls around, Aztec variety becomes evident. Each has his own preferences and goes his own way. The favorite places to go for lunch are Jack-ln-the-Box and Taco Bell. Those who stay on campus may choose from the Student Store or the cafeteria. Despite differences, when activities are presented, all are welcomed to participate. There is more to lunchtime than simply devouring mass quantities of consumables. Noontime activities, sponsored by ASB are thematic contests, events and team competitions that envoke spirit and pride among La Quinta Students. These activities allow self-expression and group cohesiveness for the students. iS86 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS 10 SECRETARY: Stephanie Messner TREASURER: Charlyn Ware VICE PRESIDENT: ZIrcumference Buford PRESIDENT: Kevin McClure Valerie S. The victorious win over Santiago made everyone proud. Prior to excitement of the homecoming day was Spirit Week at La Quinta. For Monday, students dressed in their sleep- ers. At the beginning of the year, plans were to put on the Broadway comedy Noises off . The cast was chosen, and scenery was constructed, but when Mr. Hocter sent off to get scripts and the rights for the play, he was told he was not allowed to perform it. Several months had been wasted and now there is only time to put on one big show which will be the musical Godspell . The show has been casted, and Mr. Hocter has high hopes for its success. Even if you have not been involved in a show, you can sign up for Drama I through IV. In these classes Mr. Hocter, who is an excellent teacher, tells about the theater, its origins, and some of the basic rules of acting. Students perform acts, sketches, and do improvizations. Instruction is also available on how to do lighting for a show and how to handle the sound system of the theater. Students are taught the parts of the stage, how to operate curtains, and the workings of the stage in general. Mr. Hocter has been teaching at La Quinta for twenty-two years and makes all the drama classes enjoyable. He says even if people do not go into acting, if they take a drama class they will leave with a good appreciation of the theater and what it is all about. Students are encouraged to attend the theater, and Mr. Hocter sometimes orga- nizes outings to theaters and television programs. Also this month, he is going with a group of students to London to see some plays there. Next year, Mr. Hocter would like to put on the show A Chorus Line and to take some students to New York. 102 BAND TALL FLAGS ' LM 1st Row: Derek Convery. Ray Gondrlnger, Ken Perkins. The trials are held before a judge and an attorney, who score the teams on how well they present their cases, separate from the decision. This was La Quinta ' s first year participating in the Mock Trial. They learned about being law- yers and had fun at the same time. La Quinta entered this program as an extra-curricular activity. This is a State-wide program sponsored by Constitu tional Rights Program The finalist county winners are sent to compete in Sacramento each March. 107 AZTECS ' AFTER HOURS If .. history .. .teaches us any- thing, it is that man, in his quest for knowledge and progress, is de- termined and cannot be deferred. However, they showed a great deal of potential. Having a tradition of being extremely spirited in their freshman year, the juniors tried to revive that spirit again. The efforts of the officers and representatives promised to help the juniors in this endeavor. For their major project, the juniors planned the prom. Wanting to make the evening a memorable occasion for the seniors, the ju- niors began organizing it from the beginning of the year. Thaniks to the junior class, the sen- iors were able to enjoy the evening. During the year, the juniors showed their strengths in other areas as well. Having the highest grade point average and a reputation for dedication, the juniors aspired to develop more fully into a unified group. One of desires expressed by the officers was the hope that their senior year would bring them closer to- gether. Considering their record, there is no reason to doubt that this will happen. 119 Boes. The players want it, the coach demands it, and spectators will cheer for it. Music was at its finest with its political messages. Bob Geldof created a concept that benefited a worthy cause and was also a great con- cert. The passionate performances at Live Aid from U2 Bad to Mick dagger ' s duet with Tina Turner, carried off with high energy and style. An inspiration of Bob Geldof also set off Steve Van Zandt ' s Sun City , a protest against the apartheid in South Africa. Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Mellencamp wrote about the hometown . Those who attacked the music this year should have been listen- ing instead of criticizing. On The Big Screen this year were many outstanding films nominated for an Academy Award The Color Purple was among the many that were chosen. It portrays a black woman ' s life in the early 1900 ' s and her great endurance to ENTERTA NMENT survive the social pressures of her life. The movie Pretty in Pink was reminiscent of Valley Girl. A rich boy falls in love with a not so rich girl, but of course, in the end they fall in love. Another big part of entertainment is television. Some of the biggest hit series this year are the Bill Cosby Show, Miami Vice, Family Tics, Cheers, Webster, and Dynasty. Dynasty 11, The Colbys brought Jason Colby ' s family and his empire into the rich life on the golden screen. Don Johnson made Miami Vice a hit series on Friday nights. He also brought on a clothing trend for men consisting of white T-shirts with suspenders and a cotton blazer. Adding to family entertainment were the Bill Cosby Show and Family Ties. Both shows were realistic views of family life in America and influenced joy and happiness among family members. COACHES OF THE YEAR - s T COACH JOE ZENO A winner, yes. this is quite an accurate description of Joe Zeno. He has instilled pride, pose, and perfection among the Varsity Football Warriors and LaQuinta. You could say LaQuinta is home-awayfrom home due to the extra hours he spends on campus, trying to create winning teams. A special thanks to Joe Zeno, who. after many years of service, is retiring as head football coach. COACH FLO ERIC ION I She ' s tough, but she gets the job done. Thanks to Coach Flo Eri- cioni. LaQuinta can be proud of their CIE standings in Girls ' Ten- nis. Coach Ericioni is serious about her teams ' performance and is demanding of them which pro- duces results. Coach E plans to retire from coaching tennis: she deserves a heitus. but all hope one day she ' ll get back in the swing of things because she ' s terrific! LaQuinta is fortunate to not only have Coach Suzi Brazney as our Girls ' Field Hockey Coach, but this year received a full-time teaching contract at LaQuinta. We ' re lucky to have a former college athlete who received a scholarship in field hockey, and who also was on the U.S.A. Soft- ball Team whose traveled to Aus- tralia. New Zealand. Ms. Brazney has done an over- whelming job in creating a win- ning team, and in doing so. she was honored by the league coaches. Coaches of the year are selected by their league collegues. The qualifications for Coach of the year are that the coach must have a win- ning team, or a team that has dra- matically improved. The persons chosen as outstanding coaches should feel proud as their peers, as well as faculty, students, and their community are rewarding them for their coaching efforts. These dedicated individuals use their experience, discipline, and character-building capabilities to enhance the athletic ability and sportsmanship-like attitude to their teams. COACH BILL WILSON A history teacher at Irvine In- termediate, Coach Bill Wilson also serves as girls ' soccer coach at LaQuinta. One would tend to believe that Bill is a permanent fixture at LaQuinta as be spends so many hours assisting the Girls ' soccer team, helping them to be the best. He ' s humorous but also dedicated and is admired by his team. COACH SUZI BRAZNEY 224 ATHLETE OF THE YEAR An outstanding ath- lete. Shelly Williams has devoted numerous hours In order to make LaQuinta ' s Girls ' Soc- cer team a competi- tive and successful contender. With Spirit, drive, and determina- tion. Shelly has helped lead her team to CIF. Being a soccer player for many years prior to her high school stand- ing. Shelly had excel- lent coaching from her older brother and par- ents, who are very ac- tive in A YSO. Thanks to those who helped Shelly be Ath- lete of the Year. F i n a I SHELLY WILLIAMS RICK WILSON An enthusiastic and team player. Rick Wilson exhibits all the qualities of a superior athlete. He Is always willing to give his best to help his team succeed. Yes. his individual effort Is Im Important, but Rick ' s attitude toward team pride and spirit makes him special. Not only a leader of the Aztec Warriors. Rick Is also on the wrestling team.
