The English Department, under the chairmanship of Charles Dickson, endeavored to develop in the students a more effective means of communication through writ- ing and speaking and an appreciation of good literature through reading and listening. Students in language arts, reading the works of great American and foreign authors, broadened their vocabu- lary and knowledge. With the background of drill in grammar, vocabulary, and speech, ambitious students composed themes, stories, and enlightening book reports. MRS. KATHLEEN D. The classes stressed a speaking as well as a writing ability of the language. The different customs, music, and dances of the French and Spanish speaking countries added spice to the courses. Intramural sports, lectures of the techniques, X 4 rules, and general information about every sport, and inter-squad competition provid- ed Puente boys with enumerable chances for wholesome activities.
