THEN CAME THE RAINS Rain. rain, go away and don't come back another day! This simple nursery rhyme could have been the theme for the 1987- 88 Homecoming football match. Frankly. Noah's Ark would probably have been of greater assistance to both teams than their slippery shoes. By the halftime announcements, players from the two opposing schools were virtually indistinguishable by color alone. For. at this time both teams wore uniforms of a deep mud-stained brown instead of the bright, sparkling or- ange, black and. yes, even green and white. In the last half of the game the normal plays had disintegrated into mere trench warfare in which the opponents could attempt no more than to dredge their way through the knee deep mire. Naturally, then, our team was lucky to escape unscathed, let alone victorious. Our school pride has not been shattered by the respectable 7 to 6 loss. Instead, we can hold onto our fond rainy day memories and still smile. The decorations in the hallways were very inspirational, but the weather ruined the field and dampened everyone's spirit. The depressing weather conditions certainly did not put a damper on the spirits of the 1987-88 Homecoming Queen candidates. Despite the sentiments of the actual football teams, the s' s' nominees rallied around the track in time for the halftime ceremonies. Umbrella toting escorts tried to ward off the rain, at least for short bursts of time, to allow dresses to retain some semblance of order. Unfortunately, this proved nearly impossible since the downpour changed direction with each gust of wind. During the tense moments prior to the announcement of a winner and the runners-up. nominees assem- bled alphabetically on the slick, rain-washed track of Kiwanis. They huddled under huge, multi-color- S s'ted parasols, anxiously smiling at the dedicated spectators as their names were slowly listed. At the end 's' of several endless seconds for the twenty candidates, the new queen was crowned. Janalee Bowell had captured the title of Homecoming Queen for the Senior Class of '88.
