0 I LaPorte High School LaPorte, Indiana Vol. 58 the leaders ...... the individuals. the performers 9 the athletes . . . the participants t 3 Feelings of '79 ft V J The year has ended, those long hours that students thought would never pass have gone. Those tedious days, which we counted and marked down on black boards through the school, have finally slipped away. And yet, the tee-peeing adventures of Friday nights, the anxiety and stress of homework and exams, the physical exhaustion of a hard victory all contributed to the successful mood of the year. The students of LPHS look back on the year remembering the highpoints that influenced their lives. Sophomores and Juniors anticipated their vacation, knowing that they faced yet another year of schooling. Seniors, however, graduated with a nostalgic feeling knowing they were leaving to face the challenges of life outside of high school. Slicers realized that 1978-79 was complete within itself — an entity brought about by them which in turn became an influencing factor in the people they became. 2 students enjoy one ot the terrific school lunches Marcia Williams. October 13 was named by the Student Council as Terminate the Trojans” day. and it was also orange and black day The events included a pep session during 3rd hour where there was cheering competition between the classes resulting in a close win by the Juniors. At halftime came the crowning of Diane West as Homecoming queen, Diana Kabelin as 1st Runner-Up. and Jan Whitted as 2nd Runner-Up. The other queen candidates were: Cindy Beck, Rebecca Bellman. Kathy Beiser. Connie Daube. BethGrott. Marianne Guiney. Pat Hiler. Bridgette Lewis. Lucia Manso. Debbie Moffitt. Wendy McCombs. Laura Nunn. Kim Schreiber. Lea Ann Tuholski, and Bonnie Jean Wahlstrom About Homecoming 1978. Steve Clindaniel emphasized. The reason the activities went so well is the fact that the Student Body participated in all activities with great enthusiasm.” After the bonfire, class competition continued as each class was represented in the tricycle race. Everyone then proceeded to Kiwams Field for the football game The Slicers carried the Trojans away with a score of 14 to 12. with the help of the biggest crowd the gridders had seen in awhile. 5 students ot IPHS show homecoming spirit ‘ pyramid style' Pat Hiler dresses up to show in her own way her spirit for homecoming the LPHS marching band in all its sparkle performs at one of the many home football games Mr Shei takes time out from Parent-Teacher conferences to relax and give us all a grin Mary Suitor finishes up a student after having given blood 6 Good Times . . . the Pom-Pon girls and the J.V cheerleaders enjoy the ride on their float during the homecoming car caravan students lineup to pay Tor a dance sponsored by the junior class the caped LaPorte Slicer shows her spirit by leading the water- 8iris m a cheer the 1978 Big Orange lachmef k.w | MACHINE! Activities included Homecoming. Jr.-Sr. banquet. Prom. National Honor Society. GR and BSC. The class sponsored various dances and money making projects Seniors also did well in academic subjects The year represented both joy and sadness Joy because twelve long years of education had finally paid off and at last it s time for graduation After years of being looked down upon, seniors finally knew the privileges of being at the top of the totem pole and being able to shout ' Seniors'' in the school song Sadness was the last basketball game when the final buzzer sounded And of course they realized that graduation was the end of many fond memories and friends and the beginning of a new life outside of school. So as the class of '79 goes forth they will take with them fond memories and will reminisce about their school life for many years to come We Like to Munch Out. Won't You Join Us? Some juniors proved their excitement at many of the home football and basketball games and at the exuberant pep sessions by capturing the spirit stick Leading the 1979 junior class was Mike Jankoviak. He was assisted by Karen Day — Vice President, Dianne Mannia — Secretary, and Judi Jones — Treasurer. In looking ahead to the biggest event of the year, the Junior-Senior prom, the junior class sponsored a large number of the dances that were attended by many. Helping out and sponsoring the junior class were Mr Bill Power and Dr. Varon Campbell. Change from the world of being top man on the totem pole” to being low man is an experience that every new sophomore goes through and survives. To help with their first year, the sophomore class elected Anita Buchanan to serve as their class president. Along with Anita, they elected Kelly Jones as vice-president and Missy Sampson as secretary. Sponsoring the class was Mrs. Yazel. For the year s activities, the sophomore class sponsored two dances. As always, the sophomore class looked forward to next year, when they wouldn't be the little kids of the High School. 74 1 Rick Patrick and Miss Thaulman demonstrate how to use the weight machine 2 Debbie Williams contemplates her points for G R 3. Well, it is quite an achievement when a group of girls can come together to win such a thing as a state champion- ship. The 1978-79 girls golf team achieved such a thing. These girls worked hard, were all very talented, and above all had the endurance and competitive spirit that a winning team needs. Coach Mike Hoke commented that these girls worked hard and deserved to win. It was the first time that any girls team sport from L.P.H.S. has taken a state title. It is quite amazing for any team (boys or girls) to win a state title. Our school was quite proud to have these girls represent L.P.H.S. This year's team record was 11-0. This year's team, coached by Bob LeRoy and helped by captain Lisa Barker, turned in their uniforms with a near perfect record of 14-2. Unfortunately, the only two matches the team lost happened to be two very important conference matches, leaving the team with a 4-2 DAC record. The new tennis courts were a definite advantage to the team, allowing more people to play. This overlooked the sometimes unfavorable weather conditions. It was a year to remember at the pep sessions. 147 Pom-Pons Add Spirit, Entertainment Pom-Pons were more than just pretty faces dancing around on the floor Pom-Pons were a group of girls organized to perform routines to music. The Pom-Pons presented their routines during half time at varsity football and basketball games for the audience's entertainment. Pom-Pons also did a great deal of behind-the scene activities Their organization was self-funded. The girls sold concessions during home games and they sponsored a dance. The money earned from these activities was put toward a fund that paid for all the poms and uniforms, and it also helped to pay for the seniors that went to Pom-Pon camp. The Pom-Pon squad this year was led by captain Kari Rollins and co- captain Anne Feikes. They were sponsored by Mrs. Jane Goad. The 1978-79 Pom-Pons — Front row: Kan Rollins. Anne Feikes. There are three girls selected from each club, and then the spring sports teams select the ten finalists. The student body then votes for the top five finalists. I would also like to thank Mrs Hunter, our staff advisor. She picked the staff up from nothing and put everything together. Without her I'm sure there would not have been a REMINISCING '79. But most of all the entire staff of '79 would like to thank the administration, faculty, and the student body of LPHS. You are the ones that have made the yearbook what it is with the support you have given throughout the year 248 Editor-in-Chief Donna Luther : WA
