Spanish Club Estamos estudiantes dc cspanol.” The Spanish Club was organized to help teach the students of Spanish some of the customs and traditions which are closely associated with the way of life of Spanish speaking peoples. The club, which is open only to Spanish students, meets every two weeks to discuss their activities. At the beginning of the year they had a dance for Spanish students. During Pan-American Week they made a display for the display case which showed an Aztec village. Miss Virginia Muntman sponsors the group. Debate Club Resolved: That the federal government should initiate a policy of free trade among nations friendly to the United States” was debated throughout the season by the Debate Club. The LaPortc team participated in two leagues and won third place, out of 15 teams, at the Navy Pier Invitational. In the Metropolitan Debate Union of 16 teams from the Chicago area, the LaPortcans placed third. The group was honored for its outstanding debat- ing when the National Forensic League granted La- Portc a charter to the organization. Mr. Eugene Kreyche coaches the team. Page twenty-nine

French Club Parlez-vous franqais?” The French Club does when it meets twice a month to practice speaking French with their sponsor Miss Dorothy Dick. At luncheon meetings the group reads plays and stories in French. When they meet in the evenings, at the homes of various members, they learn to play games in which they can speak French. The main project each year is the Christmas dis- play in the main floor showcase. A Bethlehem scene was featured this year. Sketch Club Sketch Club, which has been reorganized this year, stresses art as a recreation. At the roll call of meetings every member presents his or her art work for the week. The club took an educational trip to visit the art museum in Chicago. They also took numerous field trips visiting the scenic places around LaPorte, such as Pine Lake, Stone Lake, and Fox Park. When the weather is bad, they sketch drawings of landscapes around the high school. The sponsor is Mrs. Bernice Thomas. Page twenty-eight

Junior Amateur Students who have musical talent and are inter- ested in music arc qualified to belong to Junior Amateur. Their annual Winter Carnival” is one of the outstanding semi-formal dance events of the year. The Dance Band concert is sponsored by members of Junior Amateur. As a result of activities this year, the club has earned enough to offer a hundred dollar scholarship to a senior who will use it for furthering his musical education. Mr. Robert Mc- Cuaig is the sponsor of the group. Lettennen The reorganized Lettermen’s Club has been func- tioning very well this year. Some of their activities have consisted of a pep session, dances, and a re- served section at home basketball games. The purpose of this club is to boost school spirit at home games. In order to qualify for membership, one must be a varsity letter winner and must attend bi-monthly meetings. The club is sponsored by the Coaches Earl Dolaway, Bob Miller, and Norm Hubner. Page thirty
