. — - . . The 1955 El-Pe presented by the Senior Class °f LaPorte High School LaPorte Indiana Vc, Suzie and Elmer Slicer, represent you, the student body. This is the story of a place and a year—LaPortc High, 1954-5 5—as only we can tell it. We might say that 1200 students attended classes taught by a faculty of 43 for nine and a half months—but it was more than that. Through our clubs, dances, and sports—all our extra-curricular activities—we are joined together by that something called school spirit. Page two Page three Our school unites us f John M French Principal of LaPorte High School Page four :.Y ? Last year the faculty honored Mr. French at a tea celebrating his twenty-fifth year principal of LaPorte High School. In grateful recognition of his many years of steadfast, intelligent guidance and scrivcc to L.P.H.S. and to the community, we, the Senior Class of 195 5, respectfully dedi- cate the 195 5 El-Pc to Mr. John M. French, our principal. His sincerity, understanding, and constant interest in all school activities will be long remembered. It has been through his administrative efforts and broad vision that our school has achieved a high standing among the state and national secondary schools. Page five Left to Right, E. Games, B. We, Elmer and Suzie, join old and new; These students discovered that crime does not pay.” Page six Swing Choir, organized this year by director David E. Simpson, made its first ap- pearance before a Northern Indiana Principal’s Association meeting in LaPorte. This group, all members of the A Cappella Choir, specializes in music of a lighter variety. Among their many activities were appearances at banquets, parties and assemblies. They traveled to Bremen and Star City, Indiana. Table of Contents Activities .............page 18 Sports .................page 42 People .................page 60 Page seven What would school be like without the classes? Like heaven, you say—but wait—stop and think. What would it really be like if we didn’t have biology with the studying of birds, insects, and little green frogs? Just imagine the girls screaming as they re- move the entrails of a frog! Believe it or not, this is an occasional occurrence. A few of the mighty seniors venture to take chemistry where we find that all is not peace and quiet, especially when we work in the lab. An ex- plosion or an unusual fragrance is noticed in the halls of L.P.H.S. much to the amusement of the underclassmen. Testing for unknowns is the exciting part of chemistry, for we find that the substances arc really unknown. The library is in a state of confusion as the end of the six-weeks period approaches. Students hurry to pay fines, search madly for the book which they read last term and now desperately need to complete their course, and skim through magazine articles to find last minute reports. We do all this to improve that grade on those little yellow cards which we give to our parents every six weeks. How long can two years be? Ask any girl as she finishes her last day of gym. She will long remember running to Kiwanis Field for a rough game of soccer, getting back to school in five minutes, and taking a hurried cold-shower that somehow always seemed to leave her hair straight for the rest of the day. Page ten We will back and cheer forever as they grab another win. Cheerleaders: M. Birkholz R. Suroweic (J. Bandistel S. Palen Everyone tried to get into the parade. we whole-heartedly hack our teams; All Slicer athletes felt the tremendous amount of spirit that the student body exhibited in backing their teams throughout the school year. The cheerleaders and pep committee composed assemblies designed to give added inspiration to the Sliccrmen in their quest for victory. At the pep sessions the auditorium echoed the cheering of ardent fans as they prepared for the big game that evening. At the Civic Auditorium the Pepper Club and the Lcttcrmen united to form a backbone for the Slicer rooting section by sitting in reserved blocks in the student section. The Pepper Club was recognized by their waving of orange and black pompoms, and the Lettermcn, by their letter sweaters. L.P.H.S. enthusiastic (?) rooters and their cheerleaders (?) Page eleven Didn’t anyone tell the fellas there was a dance tonight? we “cut a rug' at dances; Heads, It’s Chuck’s Combo; tails, it’s Tom’ band. Page twelve The usual way to spend a Friday night is at a dance sponsored by one of the school organizations. This year we paid a nickel an inch, depending on the size of one’s foot, to gain admission to the Shoeless Shuffle.” Instead of the Wearing of the Green,” the passing of the green, derby, that is, was the bright spot at St. Patty’s Prance.” As Christmas approached, we were in a flutter thinking of the events that would soon take place. Tops on our list was Belles and Beaus,” the G.R. Formal. At the Winter Carnival,” our semi-formal, we crowned Harry Turak and Marlene Larson, king and queen. With the departure of the seniors comes the long awaited Junior-Senior Prom which has been the topic of conver- sation among the girls for months. This year we spent an evening in Paris. Those pictured arc Marty Gross, Rosie Huycttc, Jim Kneislcy, Helen Hall, Marian Hileman, and Pat Wysocki. we honor our queens and attendants; Beauty reigns throughout the years at L.P.H.S. In the fall we have the traditional parade after which we crown the Homecoming Queen. The queen is elected by the student body after having been nominated by her class. Two girls from each class are nominated to be candi- dates for this election. The girl receiving the most votes is the queen; the next two receiving the most votes com- pose the court. In the spring the same procedure is followed in the elec- tion of the track queen. The queen and her attendants present the ribbons to the winning athletes at the LaPortc Invitational Track Meet. Just before graduation we have the voting for the Prom Queen. Members of the junior and senior classes vote for any five girls in the senior class as potential queen candi- dates. In a second election, the girl receiving the most votes becomes queen and the other four form her court. Page fourteen Marty Gross, 1954 Track Queen, receives a bouquet of red reses from O. Some clubs arc serious and some just for fun, but whatever their purpose or their activities, they arc a vital part of life at LaPortc High School. Our school’s music department offers a special type of activity for those with musical ability. Even during the night, strains of music can be heard drifting from the second floor of the annex. This department is one of the most ac- tive and progressive in school. Activities Page nineteen FRESHMEN CHORUS Row One— S. Garrett, P. Sarny;, J. Lange, N. Jasinowski, C. Poor, J. Bennett, J. Whether participating in sports or merely being enthusiastic fans, Elmer and Suzie are brought closer together by the athletic events. We learn to be good sports and to sup- port our teams, win or lose. We go all-out” to back the foot- ball and basketball teams but the minor sports are often neglected by us fans. The boys who work in any sport deserve the backing of the whole student body. Colorful side-lights of the sports are the pep sessions, the Homecom- ing festivities and the crowning of the Track Queen. The gridders got off to a bad start by losing the first three games of the season. However, they bounced back to win the next three games. In the seventh game of the season the Slicers met South Bend Riley, the number-one team in the state at that time, and were badly defeated. They lost their next game to Mishawaka. The Mishawaka game was played in a snowstorm. In the big game of the season, against Michigan City, the Sliccrs gave the Red Devils a thorough trouncing by defeating them 27-0. The Slicers ended the season by defeating Culver Military Academy 6 to 0. At the conclusion of the season the gridders elected Dick Suroweic honorary captain. Don Holm was elected most valuable player. George Karnavas, Dick Suroweic, and Ted Mishlcr were given honor- able mention in the conference. Also, two gridders, Don Holm, and Jim Gazdick, were selected on the second all-conference team. Meet 10th Place. Joe, Wayne, Ted, Don, and Mike get set. Tankers This year the swimming team was improved over last year when the Tankers won only one meet. This season’s record was four wins and seven losses. How- ever, three of the meets were lost by small margins. In the conference meet the Slicers finished in ninth place. Ted Zicke placed sixth in the back- stroke, while the free-style relay team also took a sixth place. Captain, Wayne Palen Most Valuable, Ted Zieke Page fifty-five At the state meet held at Purdue University, the Sliccrs came home with tenth place. Sliccrs who placed in the state meet were Chuck Asmus, fourth in the 100 free-style, and Ted Zicke, sixth in the backstroke. The team elected Wayne Palen honorary captain, and Ted Zieke was elected to receive the most valu- able player award. Row one—Mgr. H. Ramp, D. Hix, D. Bowel 1, D. Barden, R. Pitmon, D. Lubs, J. Track As the season opened in March, prospects looked bright for the coming season with several lettermen returning. Among the returning lettermen was Dale Lubs who placed fourth in the mile in the state meet last year and Don Holm who went to state in the half- mile. It looked as if the strong points would be in the dashes, the quarter mile and the hurdle events; how- ever, the weakest spots on the team would probably be in field events. The first meet of the season was scheduled for April 1. One of the high lights of the season was to be the annual invitational meet in May. Ted Davis tries for another win. Row one—L. Messenger, C. Goluch, M. Passafumc. Mr. Reed had seven returning lettermen report for baseball this year. The season’s prospects did not look bright, but Mr. Reed was counting on some of the underclassmen helping out. Lack of exper- ienced pitchers seemed to be the weakest spot on the team as the season opened. The baseball team had a fifteen game slate with the first game scheduled to be played on April 7. This familiar cry from Bccchwood was heard as spring burst and the La Porte High School golfers dragged out their clubs. Jerry Schumm and Bob Becknell were the only returning lettermen. Working on class events such as dances, parties, the Prom, the Junior-Senior Banquet and Class Day, helps to bring Elmer and Suzie Slicer closer together. In the classroom we learn to know and understand each other through class discussion. Teachers even prove to be almost human as they help us learn to work to- gether. Classes have a traditional im- portance in L.P.H.S. The green and bewildered frcshics look in awe at the high and mighty seniors in their senior cords. They don’t real- ize that the seniors have grown fond of the ivy-covered halls and wish that graduation had not come so soon. Bryon Bernard and E. L. Watkins filled the positions of class sponsors very effectively by helping the seniors sponsor after-game and seasonal dances. The class spent hours in creating and planning the Junior-Senior Banquet, writing script for Class Day, and deciding what type of remembrance to leave the school. The annual staff worked hard editing the class’s final presentation to L.P. H.S., the El-Pc. We cannot find words to express our appreciation to the school and all those connected with the school—our administration, faculty, janitors, the Juniors, Sophomores, and even the Freshmen, no matter how green they arc— for mak- ing these the best years of our lives. We sincerely wish to thank Miss Azalia Knight for the capable guidance she has given us from our first green Freshic” days until our graduation as mighty Seniors. She was selected because of her superior grades and pleasing personality. While in LaPorte she resided at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alban Smith of 2208 Woodlawn Drive. Mickic, as her friends so often call her, lives in Utsunowiya, Japan, where she attended Utsunomiya Girls’ School. Her first impression of the United States was The country was very huge and there were many high buildings. When asked what impresses her most about L.P.H.S., she replies, The students have so many extra-curricular ac- tivities and a tremendous amount of social life. This is very different from Japan as we have very few social events for boys and girls.” Page one hundred one PRINCIPAL JOHN M. Page one hundred six IN MEMORIAM EUGENE PENNINGTON LaPorte High School has been saddened by the passing of Eugene Penning- ton, director of music, November 20, 1954. The student body and all those who knew and admired him deeply felt the loss of this man who had done so much for not only the music department but also for the school and the community. Mr. Pennington, born December 16, 1914, graduated from high school in 1933 at Marian, Indiana, where he had been reared. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from DePauw University and returned there for his Master’s degree in 1943. He taught first in Grecncastle for four years and served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. Coming to LaPorte in 1946-47, Mr. Pennington began his improvements in the music department by organizing a dance band, which he directed for eight years. He composed a theme for the organization and arranged and wrote many other songs including the school hymn. Mr. Pennington, admired and respected by all, will not be soon forgotten.
