Miss Gourley and Mr. Brady were chosen as class sponsors. By sponsoring all the football dances and most of the basketball dances, the seniors raised money for their various projects—Class Day, El-Pe, Junior-Senior Banquet, and a remembrance to the school. Special thanks and appreciation are given to the Senior Counselor, Har- old Hargrave, who advised and helped the seniors along their way through four wonderful years. She was selected by her grades, attitude in school, etc. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Leon J. Philon is Nancy’s residence while in the United States. Her first impression of the United States was, Everything is the biggest and greatest in the world. Everybody is always busy.” While at home in Montpellier, South of France, Nancy went to a girl’s school, Lycce de Montpellier. Here, there were no extra-curricular activities and the students could not choose their subjects. During her year in La Porte, Nancy has taken U. S. history, English, civics, chemistry, home economics, psychology, and sociology. Nancy thought it a wonderful experience to spend the year in La Porte. It was what he called a I.athe Tailstock Turret Attachment, which is used for reducing working time on machine work. Bill then won first place in the Ford Contest last June, 1952. He was awarded the outstanding achievement award of $100 and a free trip to Dearborn, Mich- igan. Mr. Nicklas, his shop teacher, went along with him. Also, Bill’s invention was displayed at the Museum of Science and Industry last summer along with other outstanding projects. This year brought a change in the coach- ing system. Last year’s assistant coach, Earl Dolaway, took over as head coach, replacing John Janzaruk, who moved to Elkhart. As- sisting Dolaway was Lyle button and Bob Miller, both of whom were new on the coach- ing staff at La Porte. All three were consid- ered as doing a splendid job throughout the grid season. The team voted Ed Broeker captain and most valuable player. Pictured at right is Bucky Haag, halfback Page seventy-seven• Left to right: G. Lawrence, L. Rauselunbach, J. Harris, D. Russell, B. Diederich, M. Milligan, J. Burns, J. Lawrence, T. Allcsee, F. Hamilton, S. Hupp HARRIERS La Porte High School was well rep- resented by the cross country team in all its meets. Steve Hupp, who had previously won every dual meet, gained first place in the Conference Finals at Valparaiso by breaking the tape at 10:01.8, a new course record. Hupp also made a good showing at the Ho- bart Invitational by coming in second. Dave Russell, Mike Milligan and Jim Harris ran second, third, and fourth, respectively, for the team throughout most of the season, while Glen Law- rence alternated at fifth position. Other members of the team were Jim Burns, Bob Diederich, I.eRoy Raushenbach and John Lawrence. Steve Hupp and Mike Milligan were elected co-captains and Steve Hupp was voted most valuable runner.
