9 ' The 1952 EL-PE presented by THE SENIOR CLASS of LA PORTE HIGH SCHOOL La Porte, Indiana Page two An individual’s high school days arc said to be some of the best days of his life, and that is truly so. All the minute details that enter into a student’s high school career may be unimportant and trivial, but they are always to be stored away in a special place in the back of his mind. Our contacts with other people in school arc most important because we constantly meet people, assoc- iate with them at social affairs, work with them, compete against them, and match wits with them. With that fact in mind, this year’s annual has been prepared as stimuli to preserve precious memories of the good old days with the people we have come to cherish most. The pictures on these few pages, reminiscent of La Porte in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter, will remind us of our four years—the years in which the world revolved around us. If you’re looking for your picture, you’ll find it somewhere between pages five and thirty-eight. You might also find your picture in the activity section which extends from page thirty-nine to page sixty. Two activities which definitely should have a special section arc sports and music; music is pictured on pages sixty-one to sixty-six, while sports arc found on pages sixty-seven to eightv-two. Finally, we are presenting a section devoted to the leaders and planners, the administration and faculty, which is pictured on pages eighty-three to eighty-eight. The Senior class of 1952 takes great pride and pleasure in presenting our final contribution, the 1952 El-Pe, to La Porte High School. Page three Page four Page five Right: Carl Garwood; Top, Wayne Glassman Left: Robert Ewald; Bottom, Dolores Mannia The class of 1952 started its senior year last fall by electing Miss Margaret Horne and Mr. E. L. Watkins to be the class sponsors through the year. To fill its offices, the class elected Robert Ewald, president; Wayne Glassman, vice-president; Dolores Mannia, secretary; and Carl Garwood, treasurer. Both sponsors and officers did a fine job in leading the class through a busy year. During the football season, the seniors sponsored all the after-game dances. They had a Halloween Party which was a huge success. They also sponsored some of the after- game dances during the basketball season. Special tribute should be paid to Mr. M. E. Hyde, who guided and watched over the many seniors from their first green freshie” days on to their final senior reign. Page six HAROLD M. ABNER IONA BELL Vim, vigor, vitality.' In ad- dition to the Junior Play and the Junior Prom, which were tremendous success- es, they sponsored several after-game dances to raise money for their yearly projects. The sophomores elected Vincent Fro- hnc, president; Jack Williams, vice- president; Sally Shaw, secretary-treas- urer; and Miss Gourley, class sponsor. The Sophomore Dance was held Tues- day evening, December 4. In the fall, the freshmen elected Jim Day, president; Marilyn Birkholz, vice- president; and Judy Schroeder, secre- tary-treasurer; to lead them through the year. Mr. Nicklas was the class sponsor. The freshmen held their class party, November 20, in the gym. The mid- years were welcomed into the class, Jan- uary 17. The only requirement of this club is that each member must earn several points by doing some type of service work. This work includes working at basketball concessions, working at the Polio office, working at the T. B. office, helping individual teachers, contributing money to some worthy cause, ushering, and presenting pro- grams. A Girl Reserve not only works and serves, but partakes in social activities as well. The year of 19$ 1 - $ 2 was packed full of many activities for every G. R. They sponsored the Heart Drive by having a Sock-Hop during Valentine's week and donated $116.19 to the drive. The last social function of '51 was the Girl Reserves’ Mother-Daughter Dessert. A program contrasting the old times with the modern times was given by the G. R.’s for their mothers. Also a variety of talent was presented. The G. R.’s started the new school term by electing three girls from both the sophomore and junior classes and four from the senior class to serve as the Cabinet. This Cabinet is to help carry out the functions and activities of the organ- ization. Initiation for the new members was held at Fay’s orchard. The initiates, dressed in odd attire, met at the court house square and were then escorted down Lincolnway and Monroe Street by the police to Fay’s. By the light of the huge bonfire the girls were initiated and refreshments were served. The main event of the year was the Girl Reserves’ formal dance. The theme of the dance was Snowflake Whirl”, and Bill Morthland's band played. Page for( ;-eight President ......... Vice-president .... Secretary-treasurer . Dot Wegner Nancy Shaver . Marty Gross G. J (Z.) H; i ki£t THE BAND Senior Band Members The La Ports High School Band, composed of many tal- ented musicians, has increased its reputation as an outstand- ing organization each year. During a school year they at- tend two contests, one in which the whole band participates, the other in which individual solos and ensembles are per- formed. From each of these contests they invariably bring back many honors. This year’s annual concert was outstand- ing in every respect Top row: Harold Abner, Nancy Cochran, Robert Ewald, Charlie Haag Second row: Phil Joseph, Dani Lcgncr, Elbe Lilicnthal, Mary Little- wood. Third row: Glen McCullough, John Mitchell, Joe Portcn, John Prudcn Bottom row: Lois Robe, Gloria Samuclson, Phyllis Woods, Elaine Wright In addition to these performances and certain civic functions, the band also plays for all football and basketball games played at home. The march- ing band put on performances at half-time of the football games, one theme being Alice in Wonder- land. This year the band was divided into two parts for the basketball games, each band playing every other game. Each member is required to pass a series of tests for a Third Class rating. After this he may continue to pass more tests for higher ratings, such as Second Class, First Class, and Masters, which is the highest. Each member receives a patch to donate the class to which he belongs. This rating also determines in what section he plays; that is, a First Class Bandsman would play in the first section, a Second Class Bandsman in the second section, etc. This system was introduced to insure the development of a great high school band and to offer a challenge to the students who want to progress with their instruments. The expert training of these people, both in- dividually and as a group, contributed to the success of the organiza- tion. Under the able leadership of Mr. Pennington, the orchestra, like the band, attended two contests and the honors they received were equally high. The Music Parents Club provided new formats and tuxedos for the orchestra this year. They appeared in them for the first time in the concert. The orchestra also furnished music for the Jr. and Sr. Plays, the operetta, and commencement. The string members of the orchestra practice on school time. How- ever, since the brass and woodwind sections are also in the band, they are not able to do so. For this reason all orchestra members arc requir- ed to attend after school rehearsals. This is a good indication of the fine attitude and school spirit that these members possess and one of the leading factors contributing to their success. It has shown remarkable versatility under the capable direction of Miss Ann Naftzger and has produced a concert, an operetta, and many other performances during the school year. The choir also participated in the 500 voice choir that sang for the teachers’ convention last fall and in the choir festival in Goshen this spring. At Christmas, the choir did caroling in the stores and sang Christmas programs for the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs, as well as the school assembly. The choral concert consisted of the best singing groups of both high school and jr. high school. The A Cappella Choir was the high light of this program and presented a very polished and professional program. A special group from the choir sang as the chorus in Carnival del Cafe,” an original musical production of the school. The choir meets for one hour a day with special sectional re- hearsals and many outside rehearsals connected with the per- formances. It shows fine group spirit and has contributed a great deal to the success of the music department. They provided the music for all the after game dances during the football season and numerous sock hops sponsored by various school organizations. Along with the orchestra, the dance band provided the music for Carnival del Cafe, an original musical produc- tion written by Mr. Burrin, Mr. Pennington, and Mrs. Coffecn. Also they played for the annual Win- ter Carnival sponsored by the Junior Amateur. In addition to these local activities, they played for dances in the county and presented a few out- of-town programs. Unlike the band and orchestra, the dance band is an extra-curricular activity. Therefore, they must practice on their own time. This means that the members must make some sacrifices of their own free time that they might well use for something else, showing that they are willing to work to make the band one of the outstanding organizations of its kind in the state. At their annual concert they entertained a ca- pacity audience with an unusual presentation of many popular songs. The money that the band receives goes into their own treasury. From this source comes the money to pay for the music and other incidental expenses. Last year they bought uniforms for the entire or- ganization and this year they went into Chicago for an evening of fine entertainment and food. Faye sixty-sir Page sixty-seven Page sixty-eight J. The teams from Elkhart and Muncic Central brought an immediate halt to the Slicers victory list. Despite snow and ice the team traveled down to Terre Haute to win over Gcrstmcycr. The trip back must have worn them out for they lost the next game to East Chicago Roosevelt. The team then traveled to Whiting for the an- nual Holiday Tourney. We lost the first game to Hammond, but the second game was different for we beat East Chicago Roosevelt in a thrilling 49-48 game. These Rough Riders had beaten the Slicers the week before. The Slicers met the next two teams, South Bend Central and Valpo, but lost. La Porte met Riley of South Bend in our third conference game to win a thriller 46-44. This last game must have taken all their energy for they lost the next four games to Hammond, South Bend John Adams, East Chicago Washington, and Michigan City. Once again we got on the winning road with a 64-5 8 win over Goshen. With Emerson of Gary knocking the Slicers off the winning road, we kept off for the following two games, Mishawaka and Gary Froebcl. With the regular season almost over the Slicers made an impressive win over South Bend Washing- ton. In the last game of the regular season the Slicers met Fort Wayne North Side, one of the best teams in the state, to be beaten. With the regular season over the Slicers prepared for the Sectionals. The opening game against Kingsbury was very sluggish but the Slicers came through with a win. The following game of the Sectionals was more enjoyable for the team looked better with a win over Wcstvillc. In the semi-finals of the Sectionals, La Porte met their rival, Michigan City. In a hard fought game Michigan City came out on top, 57-44. The players on the team voted Rudy Boyd, most valuable player, and Jack Buncc, Captain. Wood GOLF While the book is going to press. Coach Ray Addington is expecting a very good season. With three rerurned lettermen, Rudy Boyd, most valuable, Herman Ucbclc, captain of 1951 team, and Wayne Bush, the school is expecting a record as good as or better than the record of last year’s team, which was second in the conference and fourth in the state. The Golf team plays a home to home schedule with all the conference teams and will hold a Home In- vitational. CHEERLEADERS As the various athletic teams were under leadership, so were the rooting sections at the games. This year, the cheerleaders were veteran Debi Fay, seniors Barbara Peo and Nancy Enns, and freshman Marilyn Birkholz. These four girls did a great deal to produce the steam which the crowd showed at the games. D. Fay B. Peo N. F.nns M. Birkholz Pufjc eighty-one The champion of the intramural noon basketball league was the Mustangs. The team consisted of Charles Friend, captain; Ranno Evory, Robert Wright, Bill Mace, Tom Essling, and Lambert Lambcrson. The Mustangs played nine teams in the regular season and four in the tourney. John Griffin and Dennis Hawkins played with the Mustangs during the regular season, but were inelegible to play in the tourney because they were mid-term graduates. INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL INTRAMURAL VOLLEYBALL Another intramural sport is volleyball. The teams are under the supervision of Coach Dolaway. Since volleyball is a spring spree, the championship games have not been played as yet. Coach Janzaruk is assistant coach in this league. Page eighty-two Page eighty-three Ixft to right: Dr. G. O.
