Gerhardt Huenecke was chosen by his team mates as captain of the football team. Gerhardt played tackle; and, despite numerous injuries during the season, he was still a great asset to the forward wall. Dick Alban was honored by his team mates as the most valuable player of the year. Dick was hurt in the first game of the year and was not yet fully recovered for the Riley game. On August 18. 1947. the future Sliccr Hopefuls” arrived at Kiwanis field to find a new coaching staff composed of John Janzaruk, head coach, and Earl Doloway, assistant. Genial” John is a former La Porte High School graduate and football star. He also starred on the Indiana University football team of 1937, ’38, and 39. Previously Genial” taught at New Castle, Cathedral High and Manual Training High at Indianapolis. Earl Lover” Doloway came from Port Allegany, Pennsylvania and also starred on the Indiana football teams of 1940, ’41, and ’42.
