The team, led by Bob and Gene Barker, finished sixth in the Conference. After losing their first match to Mishawaka, they beat Riley and then lost to Elkhart and John Adams. They won the next two games from North Side of Fort Wayne and Goshen and then finished the season with losses to Central and Michigan City. Led by Senior Ron Van Vactor and Juniors Ted Hupp and Jim Winkler the team finished third in the Invitational. The team will give foes plenty of opposition this spring when they finish their schedule. Bill Feiket, Bob Garnet, Keith Zook, Art McCauley. Paul Krentz, Dick Martin, Roman S .ymula, Tom Fara, Max I.audit, Jim Freese The 1947 Cross Country team proved to be one of the best L.P.H.S. ever had, in spite of the fact that it had only one man returning from the 1946 squad. It placed second only to Mishawaka in the newly in- augurated conference while winning nine regular season meets and los- ing one to Conference Champs, Mishawaka, who went through their season undefeated. The harriers did not fare so well in larger meets placing ninth in the Hobart Invitational and fourteenth in the Eastern-Western Division Conference meet. However, they ran their best in the State Finals at Indianapolis. There they ran tenth in a field of the fifteen best teams in the state. Lettermen were: Keith Zook, Bob Games, Ken Harayda. Bill Feikes, Dick Martin, Tom Fara, Paul Krentz, and Roman S .mula. Zook was elected most valuable and Harayda captain. Paso Seventeen The Girls’ Athletic Association is organized for all girls interested in sports. It offers a complete and varied list of activities during the year. Outdoor sports of archery, hiking, and soccer are played during the fall. In the winter bowling, basketball, vol- leyball, and’ badminton are enjoyed. Softball and tennis arc saved for the springtime. Points toward sweaters are earned by participating in the above sports. If six different sports arc entered, a sweater bearing the G. A. A. maple leaf is earned. Each year the final event in the cur- riculum is the customary finale, a slumber party or over-night.” In this way G. A. A. provides sports for girls, too. The setting was the Footlights Club on Fiftieth Street in New York. The boarding house, run by Mrs. Orcutt, houses eighteen other females who are hopeful actresses. Various gentlemen calling on the women add romance and comedy throughout. Jean Maitland is the only girl to achieve theatrical success, but the love affair between David Kingsley and Terry Randall brought the play to a collossal ending. Pago Thirty-one CHAMPIONS For the first time in seventeen years the La Porte High School basketball team won an undisputed conference championship of the Eastern Division of the N. 1. H. S. C. Despite a heartbreaking loss to Michigan City in the sectional, the Sliccrs compiled a record of twenty wins and four losses dur- ing the current season. This record has been bettered only by the team of 1921-22, which won twenty-one games and lost only two. Charles (Charlie) Alsop, the high scorer of the season, was honored by his teammates as captain and most valuable player of the year. Charlie scored a total of 243 points during the season. Dick Baumgartner was second with a total of 228 points. Max Landis, John Stceb, and Dick Alban were the next in line. It will be quite awhile before the ardent Slicer fans see a team equal this year’s exploits. Coach Norm” Hubner is to lx congratulated on his splendid work in making this team a polished ball club. We were the second school in the Eastern Division of the Northern Indiana High School Athletic Association to field a team in this sport. The team participated in six meets; and, also, in the conference swim in which Gerhard Lichtblau finished second in the 100-yard backstroke. La Porte started out weak but improved rapidly as the season progressed. With six returning lettermen there are high hopes for next year.
