Dhi 1946 cfJPe pictorially reveals the varied activities of students in La Porte High School La Porte Indiana PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1946 What we have to learn to do we do by doing. In keeping with this philosophy expressed by Aristotle and emphasized by John Dewey, the pages of this yearbook will show that our students learn in a school of action. These students are waiting for the signal in speaking over the public ad- dress system. Learning to think quickly and speak fluently are phases of the English course. QUIEREN ustedes viajar a Mexico? Don't be bewildered. It simply means, Do you want to go to Mexico? Spanish stu- dents study the customs and culture as well as the language of our neighbors to the south. THESE boys gain practical experience in print shop. They print attendance slips, school station- ery. posters, pro- grams, and tickets for school events. This is valuable training for future jobs. print shop L health DOCTORS check for physi- cal defects before gym classes begin. It is important that stu- dents guard their health now so they will be at their best for future responsibilities. DICTAPHONE technique helps develop efficient secre- taries. After their high school training these girls can secure and hold secretarial positions in the busy world of business. ART students spend many hours with paint and brush. Janet Davis is toiling away on this mural representing a cir- cus. Many phases of art are taught in Mrs. Thomas's class- es. commercial art science math THERE is fun in the bottom of the test tube. Chemistry chal- lenges students daily in the classroom and laboratory of Mr. Noe. A knowlelge of chem- istry is helpful, be you doctor, lawyer, merchant, or chief. CAREFUL oral explanations clarify the problems to those who are in doubt and help de- velop the pupils' reasoning power. These advanced alge- bra students are interested in the problem being explained. IN UNITED STATES history class Miss Jones supervises a panel discussion. The tradition- al course is brought up to date by the study of current events which will help our future lead- ers carefully plan steps to be taken in years to come. history home economics STUDENTS learn by doing. Practical problems in real situ- ations develop homemakers who know about home decora- tion, personal attractiveness, and the elements of social grace. HERE is teamwork and mus- cular control. Miss Cosand's physical education classes carry out a schedule of exercis- es, tumbling, and various sports to keep the girls in tip- top condition. THE MUSIC department puts on programs. One of its biggest undertakings is the operetta. Band and orchestra concerts and choral recitals are other annual activities. physical education music Summer School 1945 Mathematics—M. E. Senior Quartet. We are Americans. Christmas Scene in new display case. South of the Border” Class Day. 53 Athletic Banquot. Senior We tell the tale of the class of '46. It may look brief in print, but don't think we didn't do anything while we were here. We're just modest. As greenies four years ago we elected Bob Anderson as president, Lawrence Jensen as vice-president, and Barbara Weidman as secretary. Our main social event, the Mixer, went off with a bang. After a vacation from ''cracking the books'' we returned as sophomores. The students who had ambition enough to run for office and be elected were Dick Kanney as president, Marge Sallwasser as vice-president, and Bob Frederick as secretary. To help fill out the somewhat scanty social life of a sophomore we sponsored a skating party. Finally we were upper classmen, those flighty juniors. We took our third trek to the polls; and when the votes were counted, Jim Donelly was our president, Jane Burger our vice-presi- dent, Martha Cygan our secretary, and Lxambert Lxandwer our treasurer. Spring Green , a play typical of high school life with all its fun and frivolity, we gave as our junior dramatic production. The Prom—of course, that was a big success. Donna Hanna was the lucky girl who had the honor of being Prom Queen. So ended our junior year. At last that day dawned, the day that will go down in history as the date of entrance of the class of '46 into the old portals of L. P. H. S. as mighty seniors. The duties of steering the class through the maze of activities was given to Carl Krentz, as president; Wilbur Frankin- burger, vice-president; Martha Cygan, secretary; Gharyl Frye, treasurer; and our sponsors, Miss Charlene Cosand and E. P. Beabout. We were busied with preparations for the after-game dances and the senior play. This year Icebound”, a Pulitzer Prize winning drama, was presented with huge success to a full house. Then, there was class day—oh boy! Last, but far from the least, came the Bacca- laureate and Commencement. Sighs of relief accompanied these great events, but yet we shall all miss the fun we had in our four years. So long! The following servicemen will receive diplomas with the class of 1946: Armentrout, Earlin Heise, Ralph Ogle, Cloyd Barbey, John Culver Hueckstedt, George Phillips, George P.
