THE EL-PE PJLU4 SENIOR CLASS =Ja f orte JJicfh S cliool LA PORTE, INDIANA EIGHTEENTH VOLUME NINETEEN HUNDRED THIRTY-EIGHT We sincerely thank Miss Anderson and Mr. Schulze for their help in the preparation of this book, for we, seniors, distinguished now by possession of parch- ment scrolls plastered with ribbons, seals, and glory and very little else, being notoriously modest, wish to give credit where credit is due. ADMINISTRATION Superintendents and principals are generally in earnest to promote democracy. Practically all the civic conditions and requirements of the larger democracy exist in the public school. The only way to train the nation to self-government is to give practice in it to the young. —Professor M. V. O'Shea. J. M. FRENCH Principal E. B. WETHEROW Superintendent What do you know? Our high school graduates will be asked this question frequently. Another perplexing question that will confront them on many occasions is, What can you do? Answers to these questions will be determined in consider- able measure by the attention they have given to their opportunities to learn in their public schools, both in their study and in their various activities Their success in life will be determined largely from what they know and from what they can do. DR. G. O. LARSON President MR. A. T. DESTER Secretary DR. F. E. FREEMAN Treasurer As Americans we are a practical people. Let us then never relinquish the things we have learned which have fulfilled good purposes. May we be ever alert to add things of proved worth, recognizing that in large measure our happiness is influenced by con- stant development of the deeper emotional and cul- tural aspects of our lives. Bob Hay BEFORE and YET ATHLETICS COACH EDMONDS, a brand new prof, in our alma mater has done a really swell job instruct- ing the boys in the gentle art of toting the ole' pigskin under our enemies' goalposts. COACH KRIDER worked with the line. These boys held Mishawaka scoreless from our one- yard line to our six-inch line for four downs. Need we say more? Edmonds Kndet BOB SALEK. Captain, and also voted most valua- ble player, led the team through a blizzard to a brilliant victory over our old rivals, the Red Devils. COACH ADDINGTON, more new blood, pre- pares the lightweights for future gridiron action. 1 Stick Addington ALL-CONFERENCE MEN Schmidt Elshire Salek SCHEDULE La Porte 19 Linton 7 La Porte 0 Riley 6 La Porte 13 Elkhart 26 La Porte 13 Central South Bend 41 La Porte 19 Valpo 12 La Porte 27 Goshen 13 La Porte 6 Roosevelt 14 La Porte 21 South Side Fort Wayne 13 La Porte 7 Mishawaka 0 La Porte 13 Michigan City 2 BOB SALEK was voted most valuable player. Won all conference honors. Very modest if you don't think so, just ask him. NORMAN BELL could kick, pass, block, carry the ball. What more could we ask? Any coach would like him. MAC ELSHIRE won all conference honors. He could catch a pass in his mouth if he had to. STEVE LEVENDOSKI there is a lot in a name. We wish we had more with the same determina- tion and love for the game that he has. JOHN LUBER has what it takes to get there. The coach wishes he were coming back next year. JOHN SCHMIDT won all conference honors and was runner up for most valuable player. Has anyone ever heard of him losing his temper? ED ENGLE is a good little man. Coach found that he really liked the game. JULIUS PELIS' opportunity should have knocked sooner. He was ready and able when it did. HANK LARSON had lots of ambition. He doesn't know there is such a word as quit. LOUIS FREET couldn't be moved so the other teams had to take the long way around. CHARLIE KNOWLES went lrom tackle to guard and about went out. We're glad he survived. JACK LAMBERT, a whole lot done up in a small package. Should be better next year. GEORGE BIGGS is a little too kind, but he can really mix it up when he takes a notion. BOB YELTON otherwise known as Stretch, kept the opposition from playing over our heads. GEORGE WALTON'S motto is deeds not words. He's coming fast and should be right next fall. DICK ROOTS, we rather thought, would fall apart any time. Coach says he should become one of the best. BOB BACHMAN, a good blocker, reliable, and a great ball carrier, we hope. JESSE HAHN, they say a little confidence goes a long way. you should go far next year. CHARLIE SUDROVECH learned a lot of things. Next year should be his best. HARRY CYGAN could play all positions but coach says he'd be best at guard. HARRY MANNERING could be if he would be. We hope he will be. WALT SMITH is fast. big. and has the ability. With these qualifications he should really go places next fall. IRA BARBER -Ouch! It takes a lot of ambition to tak'1 it all the time but more to dish it out. EMIL MAYLYSIAK is a great believer in the law of conservation of energy. He wants to and probably will get in there and show us next year. MILTON KOEPPE—is another yes and no man. He can and we hope he does play a lot of football. FREDDY BANKS must remember to let his feet grow to fit Schmidt's shoes. He has a lot of natural ability. ED LEVANDOSKI has the name, the ability and should do well next fall. JOE SCHOLL can laugh, he can block, and he can tackle. We expect him to help us a lot next fall. John was voted all state this year and all conference five for the last two years. John is versed in the long shot and the one hand push-shot. IRV SWANSON has played his second year on the varsity berth. Irv is a long shot artist and a very good defensive man. He'll be back next year. Boy, are we glad! NORM BELL leaves us this year but he will long be remembered by L. P. H. S. for his ability to come through when he was needed. p BOB SALEK is a senior this year and al- though this was his first year on the starting five, his play was very com- mendable. • BUD” LEWIS is another scrappy senior who has saved the game many a time with his ability to get hold of the ball. • MAC ELSHIRE has a smile a mile wide. It must be the fighting Irish in I him. We hate to lose a player like Mac . WARD SINGLETON became a varsity man toward the middle of the season. He'll be back next year. JOHN ZAKES. a junior, made his debut in the sectional tournament where he filled Bell and Elshire's shoes. DWIGHT HANDLEY was the spirit of the team. He also showed a prophetic prediction of our wins or losses that was unusual to say the least. Skeptics say that we won so much that he was almost bound to be right. FRED BUCHNER, we'll prophesy, is go- ing to show us some real basketball. He has two more years in L. P. H. S. and we aren't crying about that. GOLF TEAM Row 1 Bob E. Johnson. Martin Wilmeth.
