He was here when the school opened, and! he began that year creating highly successful glee clubs. After his annual Kiwanis Pancake Sale, he very quickly received nine pies all over his face and back. And all he could do afterward was laugh! Indeed, Mr. Grace was never an ordinary man. He showed love and concern toward all his students. The cheerleaders helped the Patriots rock on to victory. They promoted great enthusiasm and bicenten- nial pride to our campus. During the summer they worked very hard to mal-ce and improve new cheers. 'In August they went to camp, and although the competition was very challenging, the cheerleaders returned with superior ribbons and a trophy. The cheerleaders helped promote Patriot spirit by selling buttons and ribbons and by having car washes, pep rallies, and a spirit dance in September. The cheerleaders certainly brought the student body and faculty much more of that Patriot Pride, creating many more memories that we will cherish forever. The Freshman class was a very spirited one. They gathered together to create many memories which will be cherished for years. Gail Reese, as Ninth Grade President, and Karen Choate, Vice-President, worked hard to make sure the Ninth Grade class was a successful one. Cindy Vargas was elected Ninth Grade Secretary, and Cindy Childress was chosen as Treasurer. Both girls helped immensely as the spirited Freshrnen sponsored the Christmas Dance on December 12 and the fantastic and patriotic Spirit of '76 Dance in january. Both dances were events which will last in our memories. The Freshman class also acted as the leaders for the school by showing the Eighth Grade and Seventh Grade students the proper way to act in a junior high school. The best example of their role as leaders was the way in which the Freshmen showed spirit and pride during Spirit Week. 14! The students first voted for twenty girls then ten, and finally five finalists. These girls were Margaret Cranston, Jean Dwyer, Judy Hart, Lori Mortley, and Theresa Potter. The finalists were taken to lunch at the Foxfire on Friday, November 14, and later Friday night attended the dance to hear the final results. Mr. Hoyt was given the honor of announcing Miss La Palma. The court was Margaret Cranston, jean Dwyer, and Judy Hart. Lori Mortley was crowned Miss La Palma with Theresa Potter her princess. Football team took the Western Division Title. During basketball season the ninth grade team sought revenge and won the Anaheim District Championship, destroying South at Orangeview. Not to be outdone, the LV. Basketball team stole another Western Division Title, also from South. As we went to press, the j'.V . and Varsity Track teams were off and running toward another equally successful season. Also, the Wrestling team sported new red, white, and blue uniforms. How could any of us ever forget that Friday night in November when Lori Mortley was crowned Miss La Palma? The Christmas Dance was a dressy and festive affair that was enjoyed by everyone who attended. As usual, the eighth grade class managed to turn an otherwise uneventful Friday night into a gala occasion when they sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. In addition to dances, the glee clubs performed throughout the year, winning many awards and trophies. The band, resplendent intheir new uniforms, also won many awards. The TORCH staff reported all these events to the student body exceptionally well. Our annual Pancake Breakfast Ticket Sale broke all records. We were quite proud of our new choral group , junior Varsity Boys' Glee. Back to School Night and Holiday in Music were two of the activities in which the glees performed. Our concert tour to the elementary schools was rewarding and fun. The annual Boys' Glee Clinic I Festival and the Advanced Girls' Glee's second apprearance at the National Orange Show were during the middle of the school year. Finally, the Spring activities included S.C.V.A. Festivals in Malibu, La Habra, and Baldwin Park, plus our District Festival at the Convention Center. The 1: Sharps and Flats Ball '76 was a big success, and the two Spring Concerts ' brought our season to a close. The eighth grade class won the Penny Race by a large margin during the United Way Fund Campaign in November, In addition to that, the eighth grade was also very successful in many other activities. They organized the Miss La Palma election and sponsored the Thanksgiving Dance where Lori Mortley was crowned Miss La Palma. Leading the eighth grade students in these activities were the eighth grade officers. Sharon Kyomen did an out- standing job printing posters and making signs for the Miss La Palma election and other eighth grade activities. No wonder she was elected President! Frankie Colacion was Vice-president, Shari Hanson was Secretary, and janet Pavlovsky was Treasurer. All the girls did a great job. The eighth grade class ended the year by sponsoring the Graduation Dance as a farewell gift to the departing ninth grade students. All in all, the eighth grade class was a very spirited one which created their share of special mem- ories. ff ,Q-I. li Q- , rn U- J: ' -315. ' ' if uri -2' ' 'yiitf - . , ,, fa v '1'f 'NE .' Four new faces were added to the staff. Mr. Seitz joined the administration as vice- principal. Mr. Deering, Mrs. Appel, and Mrs. Rosen added new ideas and opinions to the math, reading, and aphasic departments, respectively. With the new rotating schedule, the teachers were really going places. On Tuesday and Thursday, when students ' were not at school, teachers were busy in meetings where they discussed creative learning techniques. I hope that you, as a citizen of our society, have taken advantage of La Palma jr. High School's many educational programs and will continue throughout your life to grow and contribute to the future success of our great Nation. I also hope that you will support our great Nation as it accepts the challenges of many outside forces that are designed to take away our destiny and our faith in a free democratic society. This is going to take personal sacrifice l on your part, but l'm sure that you will be able to handle each situation as it arises before you. 1 Q14 Va. 495, 5 LEFT - In his second year as Principal here, Mr. Hughes has become well-known to practically everyone.
