Black, superintendent April' 1959 La Marque, Texas To the Sponsors and Members of the Graduating Class: It is my high privilege to extend greetings and congratulations to the commendable students and to the dedicated sponsors of the 1959 grad- uating class. Special praise is due the sponsors and members of the Annual Staff for this splendid Year Book. It will be a souvenir of the highlights of your senior year. In later years as you thumb. through the pages, you will recall many pleasant associations and worthwhile achievements. I recall very vividly a statement I made fifteen years ago to the La Marque people at a mass meeting held in the old Lamar auditorium. A few citizens wanted to dissolve the newly created independent school district and the mass meeting was called to discuss the issue. Although I had been Superintendent for only a few months, I loved and respected the students for their good breeding, their sterling character, and their high degree of intelligence. I informed the citizens that they had the most laudable children I had ever known and it would be a terrible mistake to deny them any opportunity to secure the very best possible education. It is a source of satisfaction to repeat now what I said then: We have the finest students I have ever known. The members of this year's senior class fully exemplify that statement. You have shared in the development of the schools and we are grateful for the contributions you have made. The people voted unanimously to retain the independent district and since that time have continued to support a good educational program. This was demonstrated recently when, by a two to one vote, the people approved Senate Bill 116 and thereby set up a financial structure that should provide ample funds for a first class school system for years to come. At the same election the people approved a bond issue to support a five year expansion program. Seniors, we are going out of the school system togethe r. You will enter a higher institution of learning or will start on your vocational career, whilel am supposed to go into retirement. While I am past the age when most men retire, I cannot even consider quitting. I will be engaged in important work for years to come. Your,capable and devoted principals, teachers, and I will be at your call at any time we can serve you. As you enter college or your vocation, please understand that I, as your Superintendent and personal friend, wish you success and happiness throughout your life. May God bless and keep you.
