LaLumiere wrestling never changes. -Once again, a group of dedicated, young men locked themselves into a sweat box for three months. -Once again. Coach Kirkby ' s stress on excellence was surpassed only by the team’s excellent performance. -Once again, through the talent of a few seniors, plus the desire of some tough underformers, the team rarely faced defeat, with a record of ten and two. -Once again, LaLumiere won its own tournament. -Once again, LaLumiere wrestling was LaLumiere wrestling. Baseball 1976-a season which began with many questions. How would the team respond to the coaching changes? How would it overcome its lack of pitching experience and its youth at many key positions? By season ' s end, the baseballers had answered all the doubters by compiling an 8-4 record in a season that will be long remembered for its many high¬ lights: the doubleheader victory over North Liberty behind the shutout pitching of McKenna and Collins; the trip to Comiskey Park to battle New Prairie; the Rentschler-led victory over a powerful Oregon Davis team; and finally the season closing victory over Westville which gave the school its best one year winning percentage in athletics ever. The 1976 season was one of the best ever for La Lumiere baseball. The loss of co-captains Pete Rentschler and Steve Kalapsa will be felt deep¬ ly, along with the loss of other senior letterman. However, with 12 letter- men slated to return the future should be bright. 45
