A little bit better than most; not as good as seven and one, but almost. Three words, six and two, not a fair summation of the season. Numbers cannot express hard work and dedication. They do not show the sweat and muscle that went into every game, win or lose. For the linemen, it was hour upon hour of hitting the sled and each other. For the backs, it was running a countless number of patterns, catching passes, and perfecting moves. For Mr. Kirkby, it was a great pride in seeing his players perform to their best, a pride that he spread to his staff and, even more importantly, to his players. This record of six and two was the best this team could compile. Only a disputed call prevented seven and one, which would have been the best in the school ' s history. The team was a success; the season, a triumph. . - Soccer 36 Who would have expected it? After losing to eventual league champion Westview in the third game of the season, certainly not Mr. Coppens. After losing to defending champion Argos next, in overtime, certainly not the student body. After tieing pre-season favorite Bethany Christian in the following game, certainly not the team. But wait! Yes, the team did plan to beat Argos, for the first time ever, in the Regional Championship. It did plan to continue all the way to the title game of the State Championship Finals, to send four players to the All-Conference team, and to wind up the season with the most wins ever for a La Lumiere Soccer team. Sure, it is inex¬ plicable how a bunch of hard working soccer fanatics, led by a solid core of enthusistic seniors and coaches, achieved such a level of greatness. But La Lumiere often steps over the boundary into impossibili¬ ty. And toward this end. Soccer 1975 stumbled upon an unchallengeable truism: that the surest way to win is through refusing to lose. 37 I ; With the return of the Mac Lave rty Cup champion and the number three and five players from last year ' s winning team-I mean, club-plus some other seasoned veterans and some exciting newcomers, the tennis outlook was bright. The courts were complete, and the fencing was up; but, much to the dismay of a patient Father Knoll, the team-I mean, club-just could not seem to pull together. They managed only once to overcome much more practiced opponents. Of course, the team-I mean, club-always put forth a noble effort; but, without the necessary practice time, it was an uphill battle. Perhaps next year, the tennis team-and I mean, team-will finally have a real chance to prove itself! I 39 These ' 76 Lakers set, besides a season record thir¬ teen victories, many other records, as well. Including a new best defensive point average, best team free throw percentage, and also the longest winning streak in Laker basketball history. What led to their unparalled success? Was it excellent coaching? Yes, partly. How about excellant leadership and team discipline? Yes, some that, too. And what about the team ' s unique balance? Was that the reason it did so well? That ' s one more reason. You see, a near flawless blending of these left no alternative but success, which the team enjoyed and savored all season long. Wrestling 42 LaLumiere wrestling never changes. -Once again, a group of dedicated, young men locked themselves into a sweat box for three months. -Once again. Coach Kirkby ' s stress on excellence was surpassed only by the team’s excellent performance. -Once again, through the talent of a few seniors, plus the desire of some tough underformers, the team rarely faced defeat, with a record of ten and two. -Once again, LaLumiere won its own tournament. -Once again, LaLumiere wrestling was LaLumiere wrestling. LaLumiere wrestling never changes! 43 Baseball 44 Baseball 1976-a season which began with many questions. How would the team respond to the coaching changes? How would it overcome its lack of pitching experience and its youth at many key positions? By season ' s end, the baseballers had answered all the doubters by compiling an 8-4 record in a season that will be long remembered for its many high¬ lights: the doubleheader victory over North Liberty behind the shutout pitching of McKenna and Collins; the trip to Comiskey Park to battle New Prairie; the Rentschler-led victory over a powerful Oregon Davis team; and finally the season closing victory over Westville which gave the school its best one year winning percentage in athletics ever. The 1976 season was one of the best ever for La Lumiere baseball. The loss of co-captains Pete Rentschler and Steve Kalapsa will be felt deep¬ ly, along with the loss of other senior letterman. However, with 12 letter- men slated to return the future should be bright. 45 Track 46 Alright, you cats, we ' ll take a nice five today. But . . . but there ' s a wind chill factor of thirty be¬ low today. Aw, that ' s nothing, cats. La Lumiere Track runs in anything, no matter what. Besides, it ' ll put hair on your chest. And so La Lumiere Track continues. A group of thin- lies that seems to always come through winners in May. A group of guys with class, led by a zealous coach who seems to gather them up in March, run them, push them and kill them, and then produce a team that never fails to make believers of the non-believers in May. This year was no dif¬ ferent. Led by Kelly, Marsch, Bertrand, and Sullivan, La Lumiere Track won seven and al¬ most three. Again, all the pain, sweat, and agony seemed worthwhile in the end. d ft ■ ' ppprv 47 How could it happen? How could a small prep school from the pine woods of Indiana even field a soccer team to compete in the I. S. A. tournament? How could that team manage to fight its way to the Regional Championship where they defeated Argos for the first time in La Lumiere soccer history? How could this team of wild headhunters manage to find themselves in the Indiana Soccer Association Cham¬ pionship Game at Indiana University and become the state runnerup? How? By having an unstoppable will for victory. 50 Just a friendly rivalry. -a battle between two highly competitive schools -a battle for superiority -a battle of the sexes -a battle of the vocal chords The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. St. Mary ' s gains re¬ venge! Just a friendly rivalry. Prep Bowl i It was a night of fun and excitement for spectator and contestant alike. The woks ranged from the hilari¬ ous antics of Brennan ' s Down Homers to a serious Lonesome Charlie by Larry Coffeen. Chris Hurley was drummed out of the Catholic Church while Pete Rentschler ' s Missing in Action set the listener ' s mind to thinking. Demosthenes would have been proud of both medalist and non-medalist. Oratory Contest Thurber, Faulkner, Twain, BRESLIN, Miller, Salinger, SYBURG, Wilder, and Stein¬ beck, these were the ’’American Voices . All were performed and performed in the usual La Lumiere- St. Mary ' s dramatic excellence. - 11 i Jane, Nancy, Carol, Jeannie, Dorothy. Names bring people who bring talent and individuality which bring willingness to work and to laugh which bring growth and fun. Peggy, Cathy, Trisha, Mary, Kris. The year was colored and defined by clever skits called Going Bananas , several lively and en¬ joyable mixers, an intense and competitive prep bowl and a fine rendition of several works of literature in American Voices . Maria, Julie, Sue, Ruth. An en¬ joyable year reminds us of so many other years of frustrating and humorous practices for pro¬ ductions, intelligent and circuitous discussions, boring and successful mixers. Lee, Connie, Maureen, Fran, Laura. Finally, it is indi¬ viduals in personal interactions. Always it will be the mixing of memory and desire. Always it will be for love am in you am in i are in we . Megan, Molly, Patti, Kate, Rosie. - 55 It was a day that will be cherished by every player on both teams. The stories of the day La Lumiere played in Comiskey Park will be told for many years to come. The score was secondary, the experience gained by everyone involved over¬ came the disappointment of the loss. Comiskey Park Spring Day Out came the brooms, rakes and mowers, and under the direction of the student Council the campus received an overhaul. Out came the parents, grandparents, friends, and fans, and thanks to the weatherman, the 1976 La Lumiere Spring Day was a success. It all started one afternoon before a baseball game, and it didn’t end until Sunday morning after brunch. What happened in between? A cookout, a mixer, a folk singer, pizza, a movie and a couple hours of sleep. What next? Breakfast, games (wink ' em?), singing, frisbee, and more games. Then a formal dinner and dance (ah, what a dance!), and a couple more hours of sleep. Then it all came to an end with a nice light brunch, and all departed after a nice relaxing weekend at the La Lumiere Prom. Next year it ' s going to be a full week . Prom 58 We beseech thee, cried the Ensemble; and the Choral Club replied by giving an earth-shaking performance at the 1976 Spring Choral Club Concert. Sing was never sung with such vibrance, and Marne was not maimed for the first time since the Club received the music. Ed Twyford ' s solo was surpassed only by Zimmermann and company ' s hilarious Honey . The crowd loved it, and Happy Days were here again for the La Lumiere Choral Club. D. and it has finally made it to La Lumiere. Chess, the game of simpletons - at least that ' s what the La Lumiere opponents seemed to be, as the team lost but one match. Concentration is the key, and, led by a certain Camel Bones, La Lumiere ' s concentration was unwavering as they checkmated opponent after opponent. After such a year of success, it looks like chess is here to say. 67 Memories, you say? They have a few. But they are still making them . . . Still making friends . . . Still making grades, good and bad . . . Still conquering. I re¬ gret to say we are among the latter. We took over the book at mid-year because our senior editor found out that it is impossible to do everything at La Lumiere, and still be alive at the end of the year. So, not knowing what we were getting into, we naively became co-editors. Editors (friends), working hard, learning as the year progressed, dreaming and planning for next year ' s book. If you liked this year ' s book, you ' ll love next year ' s. If you didn ' t like this year ' s book, you ' ll love next year ' s anyway! . 168 % ! } m t l
