It would tell of watermelon parties on the sun- deckg the weighty student council decisions in the student loungeg the imitation sounds of fire sirens and leap frogging down the hallsg the sudden commotion of an on call nurse dashing for the O. B. A harassing chapter would be the one accounting the six o'clock a. m. routine. Then suddenly in the p. m. , when all becomes still and a song breaks forth, everyone knows there's a prayer meeting in the house. lt's their secret of inner strength, the book would read. Each year a new set of bewildered Freshmen, over-Worked Juniors and contemplating Seniors with their harassed supervisors work, study and learn together. As we Work we realize that life and death are inevitableg that the sick are ever with us and that healing is a miracle. A challenge is presented and Christians must meet this challenge! No, but the treatment of it certainly is. Nursing care has shifted from bedside nursing to rehabilitation. No longer are patients tied to their beds exposed to the elements of nature. The majority will be seen strolling about, caring for themselves and participating in various activities provided for their enjoyment. Most students enjoy the easy-going life at the San. CHRISTIAN NURSING EDUCATION Not to be ministered unto, but to minister, the motto of our school, is the basis for the philosophy upon which is built our total educational program. It has been stated that the basic objective of good education is to develop the total personal capacities of the individual. In a Christian educa- tional institution such an objective is not complete. For what purposes are one's personal capacities developed? For self? For society? For God? We contend that developing self for the sake of self, results in selfishnessg developing self for the sole purpose of serving our society is purely humanitariang but to develop one's abilities for the purpose of glorifying God through one's service to society will bring blessing to others and satisfaction to self. In Christian Nursing Education the total program bends to this one great purpose-that of producing Christian nurses who can truly nurse the total individual, mind, body, and soul. La Junta, Colorado As the sun rises in glory and splendor, a group of student nurses can be seen traveling to the Rocky Ford hospital for work. Here their schedule begins with chapel. Each day's work is sim- plified by modern equipment, one of the high lights being an inter-com,muni- cation system, enabling the nurses to converse with the patients without leaving her station. Other items of in- trest in this 2.5 bed hospital are: contour sheets to simplify making neat beds, blue green garbs giving the O. R. and O. B. personnel that new look , and large picture windows in every room, to give the patient a view of the out- side world and admitting light and cheer. Without the Christian nurse in our hospitals, the Mennonite Church could not have a hospital program. The Mennonite Hospital is a part of the training of Christian nurses and it means we have a twofold responsibility to the com- munity which we serve--to relieve suffering and to relieve this suffering through the ministry of a nurse who knows and under- stands. Christian care to the ill is not without its reward. A cup of cold water given in the name of the Great Physician immediately trans- forms the nurse into a wonderful counsellor, and a friend in time of need. As ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me. The future program of the Mennonite Hospital depends on Christian nurses. Learning to live together is a valuable part of our experience at LaJunta. Our student council helps us solve our dormitory problems satisfactorily. Each year a different group of students are selected to represent the student body on this council. Through this we not only learn to look at things objectively but also come to appreciate more other peoples backgrounds and ideas. Once a month a representative group of faculty and students meet to discuss subjects of mutual interest. Both groups gain perspective through the discussions that take place.
