Dedicated to the Student urse Who with high ideals and fond hopes nzakes the nursing profession her goalg notwithstanding the knowledge that there lies before her inang hours of hard work both nientaillg and phgsicallg, nionients of grace responsibilitg, and gears of studg and practice. Three gearseonlg a small segnient of life, but when concentrated upon the task of learning, lining and being a potential professional nurse these gears inake a greater inipact upon a girl's personalitg than ang other coniparable span of tinie. To the girl applging for a place in a nursing school the gears stretch out long and nigsteriouslg before her. To the senior in her lasrt inonths of schooling the gears seeni short and full, so swiftlg gone. However, just ang three gears of haphazard practice and theorg could neuen produce capable nurses. There are multiple phases of nursing education all of which nzust be correlated so as to give each individual student a definite inclusive foundation on which to build her nursing career. In additionf to classes ufith the 'usual eurriculuni to oouer, tests to pass, and grades to achieve, the student niust inaster niang nursing skills and procedures. Each class and each. gear builds upon the previous one in order to integrate scientific theorg, practical experience, and basic conzprehension of actual eases. Not eiferg student receives eocactlg the some experience, but the pattern is set, and the reguireinents are high. Not least of the aceonzplishments of these three gears is the change in personalitg traits. Though basic types and fnndanicntals reniain. constant, the careless student nurse mast learn to take responsibilitg since the lines of others often lie in her hands. The tinzid one niust learn self-confidence bg beings often on her ou'n in travel and new situations. If she is proud she must learn to adniit mistakes and take the consequences. Cooperation, dependabilitg, aecuracg, and tact are characteristics nurtured alrnost spontaneonslg throughout the training period, though few attain perfection in ang.
