riof Historical Survey The Mennonite Hospital and Sanitariuni as we have it today had its beginning in 1008, when a Tuberculosis Sanitariuin was founded by the Mennonite Church. This work was begun, and has continued, under the direction of the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities. A tract of land was purchased near lla Junta, and a Sanitarirnn erected thereon. ln a stew years other than tuberculosis patients were seeking' adinittance to the institution. ln 1915? control and operation ot' the city hos- pital was accepted by the General Board. The probleni was teniporarilv solved but as the work grew this proved inadequate. In 1923, a petition was inade to the Gen- eral Board for establishing' a new hospital at La Junta. ln 1925 the old Sanitar- iuin was sold and a plot on the Southwest edge of the city was chosen as the site tor the New Hospital. The nanie Mennonite Hospital and Sanitai-iuni was chosen for the new buildings and on April 8, 1928, they were ready for occupancy. The Mennonite Hospital and Sanitariuni is a seventy-bed institution, approved by the Ainerican College ot Surgeons, and registered with the Ainerican Medical Association. A Board of Directors, including seven local men, one ineinber of the General Board of Missions and Charities and the Superintendent of the Hospital is directly responsible for the governing of the institution.
