Director of Nursing School and Nursing Service R.N. 1934 Colorado State College of Education 1935-36 Goshen College B.S. 1937 MRS. MAUDIC SXVAHTZENDRUBER ILS., R.N. uties of a irector of Nursin Director of Nursing Service! That is the title we give today to the person who is responsible that the right nurse is in the right place at the right time. At one time, not so far hence, she was called the Superintendent of Nurses. In other Words, she is tl1e person who sees to every phase of a nurse's activity when she is on duty-and sometimes when she is off duty. To a casual observer, a service schedule does not appear terribly complicated. Only one who has gone through those trying experiences of striving to supply each ward with an adequate staff of nurses can appreciate all of the details involved. It must be remembered that each student can have only a certain number of days in each department-that one nurse wants to be working days over a certain week endeanother does not want to be working 3:00 to 11:00 during Easter seasonwthe third wants a few days off the last of the month while her friend is visiting her- and so on. If only schedules could function for six months Without any further adjusting-the Work of the Director would certainly be lightened, Listed among the duties of the Director of Nursing Service is that of counseling nurses, maids, workers, and doctors concerning various items incidental to their work, Salesinen, selling drugs, supplies, equipments, and lllllll0FOllS articles needed in a hospital take a great deal of her tinie, Visiting patients in each departinent is expected of the Director, as this is the only way in which she can contact these persons for whom the hos- pital functions. ln this hospital the Director of Nursing Serv- ice is also tl1e director of the School of Nursing. Therefore. her time is divided between the hos- pital a-nd the school. The Educational Director works very closely with the Director of the School in all phases of the educational department. The curricculunl for the e11ti1'e year is planned largely hy the liducational llirector, and so is the pre! clinical routing of students on the wards. The llirector of the School teaches several suh- jects during the preclinical periods-usually Pro- fessional Adjustments and Nursing llistory. 111 addition to guiding students! educational activi- ties, she must be mindful of their health, social, and spiritual welfare. Not a sniall item, is that of discipline at the Nurses lloine Zllltl on the Hospital ward. lf thc llirector of the School and Nursing Serv- ice were entirely responsible for every detail mentioned ahove, her load would indeed be a heavy one. llowever. the facility of the school, and the Nursing Staff of the hospital, as well as the Superintendent of the hospital. all sha1'e i11 these responsibilities. The faculty is organized into five connnittees: ,NtillllIllSlI':lilUl1. Library and Curriculum, Student Welfare. Clinical Instruction, and Nursing Service l'rohIenls, These groups take care of the actvities coming under their respective heads and at the monthly faculty meetings, reports are discussed and decisions made. These decisions in turn are suhniittcd to the Nursing School Conunittee, and finally to the llospital Board of Directors. if their nature calls for same, -Mrs. M. Swartzendruber
