Poverty. distress, difficulty, disaster have Often coiitributed to the beginning of 801119 worthy- e11deavor. Out of tl1e suffering of the Cfriinean lVar, Florence Nightingale arose as tl1e founder of 1110tl6l'll nursing. Out of tl1e 111oral de- cline and skepticisin of England in the latter half of tl1e eighteentl1 Century, arose tl1e quiekening Wesleyan revival. May it be that lllfx global war which now eneircles the earth, tl1e ahnost, revolu- tionary social changes whieh roll toward us like a mighty tidal wave, tl1e death destroying filllllllt' over inany parts of tl1e earth whim-ll is already taking a daily toll of thousands of lives. the loss of faith in tl1e Christian Cliurch and the K'l1lll'4fll'S God whieh is. enshrouding 111011 in lllind infidelity. are the sorrows whieh shall call forth and nur- ture tl1e inightiest inissionary endeavor tl1e world has yet 96611. The Great Religious Crusades of the past enriched the travelers with a knowledge of new lands illltl 11l:'XV people, Cultures were transfer- red froin H116 land to another. Tl1e nurses of tl1e Mennonite Hospital School of Nursing will share this increased responsibility. They stand on the threshold of this 116NV world. Never have nurs.es been eailed hy a greater need. riof Historical Survey The Mennonite Hospital and Sanitariuni as we have it today had its beginning in 1008, when a Tuberculosis Sanitariuin was founded by the Mennonite Church. This work was begun, and has continued, under the direction of the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities. A tract of land was purchased near lla Junta, and a Sanitarirnn erected thereon. ln a stew years other than tuberculosis patients were seeking' adinittance to the institution. ln 1915? control and operation ot' the city hos- pital was accepted by the General Board. The probleni was teniporarilv solved but as the work grew this proved inadequate. In 1923, a petition was inade to the Gen- eral Board for establishing' a new hospital at La Junta. ln 1925 the old Sanitar- iuin was sold and a plot on the Southwest edge of the city was chosen as the site tor the New Hospital. The nanie Mennonite Hospital and Sanitai-iuni was chosen for the new buildings and on April 8, 1928, they were ready for occupancy. The Mennonite Hospital and Sanitariuni is a seventy-bed institution, approved by the Ainerican College ot Surgeons, and registered with the Ainerican Medical Association. A Board of Directors, including seven local men, one ineinber of the General Board of Missions and Charities and the Superintendent of the Hospital is directly responsible for the governing of the institution.
