House Physician, Mennonite Hospital Kansas University School of Medicineg Interneship, St. Mary's Mercy Hospital, Gary, Ind. The Mennonite Church some years ago increased its scope of missionary work by entering the med- ical field. There were those who had the vision to see the need for providing a place where the young women of the church might be trained in the nursing profession, Today we have an institution that as a physical plant is as good as any in the country, and as a training schooi holds a high place. For some time it has been the conviction of those responsible that there is a need for a resident physician, preferably one that has the interests of the church primarily at heart. The immediate need of the institution was in the matter of records. This was my especial duty in the past four months, and necessitated that I take the history and make a physical examination of each patient, so that I could re- cord the essential data for permanent record. This is done for the sole purpose of increasing the efficiency of the institution, and is part of the work in every Standardized hospital in the country. Any hospital that applies for standardization is visited by the representative of the American College of Surgeons, who in- vestigates the physical plant and equipment of all departments, the records, qualifications of the staff, the ethical standards the staff has adopted, and then on the basis of his report and recommendations the institution is standardized, or put on the temporary list, or rejected. Our institution is rated very well as regards the nurses' training school, the various departments and laboratories, and the qualifications and practices of the professional men. There has been a question in the mattter of records, not regarding those that were completed, but too many were not completed. It is only natural that in some instances the patient does not see why the resident need get the his- tory and make the physical examination, because the private physician already knows all about the case. In order for a program to be worthwhile there must be close cooperation between the resident and the family physiciang the latter doing all he can to make the resident's time of practical value in providing him with actual medical and surgical work, and in advising his patients as to the duties and value of the resident. In the future a program may be Worked out which will be mutually beneficial to all. The administrative forces of the institution, the work and professional attitude of the nurses, and the opportunity to get well acquainted with this part of our missionary work, have made my stay here very beneficial. I will watch with interest the further progress and development of our Christian service through the avenues of the hospital here and the service of our ytlllllfff People who will utilize the practice of medicine and surgery as a means to an end and not merely as an end in itself. FRED s. BRENNEMAN, M. D. 16
