ALLEN H. ERB Superintendent of Hospital and Sanitariuin THE EDUCATION OF THE NURSE Shall the preparation of a 1lHl'S6 consist of an apprenticeship or a well planned course i11 edu- cation? Around this question hangs the major portion of discussion of trends in nursing education to- day. Stated in another way: Do we learn most by doing or by instruction? The present day criticism of nursing preparation is that the hospital of the past has made the nurse in training too much an appren- tice. The call for a New Dealu in nursing education is being made. This new emphasis would make the nurse's preparation a well organized curriculum based upon accepted educational standards. A program of training that consistently balances theory and practice, study and application, the classroom and the laboratory, professional efficiency and character. will best prepare the nurse for nursing. The ultimate objective of her training must be the care of the sick. In the present agitation for a new emphasis i11 preparation we should be careful to frame our policies by this objective which we seek to obtain. Ill a school of nursing such as this volume of The Nightingale describes. special emphasis is placed upon the development of the cl1a1'acter of the nurse. lVe believe that evangelical Christian experience is the lI1WV211'll source from which there is born all virtue and strength of character. The students of this school are to receive as part of their education such training as shall lead tl1e1n into a rich Christian experience. Bible study, prayer, worship, Christian work, and obedience to Christian principles, are a means to this end. Seeking first the Kingdom of God is made a working principle of living. XVhen this is done such virtues as love, joy, humility, honesty, kindness. and faithfulness are developed. XVith faith directed toward Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, good character is assured.
