ERB Superintendent of Hospital and Sanitariuin THE EDUCATION OF THE NURSE Shall the preparation of a 1lHl'S6 consist of an apprenticeship or a well planned course i11 edu- cation? Around this question hangs the major portion of discussion of trends in nursing education to- day. Stated in another way: Do we learn most by doing or by instruction? The present day criticism of nursing preparation is that the hospital of the past has made the nurse in training too much an appren- tice. The call for a New Dealu in nursing education is being made. This new emphasis would make the nurse's preparation a well organized curriculum based upon accepted educational standards. A program of training that consistently balances theory and practice, study and application, the classroom and the laboratory, professional efficiency and character. will best prepare the nurse for nursing. The ultimate objective of her training must be the care of the sick. In the present agitation for a new emphasis i11 preparation we should be careful to frame our policies by this objective which we seek to obtain. Ill a school of nursing such as this volume of The Nightingale describes. special emphasis is placed upon the development of the cl1a1'acter of the nurse. lVe believe that evangelical Christian experience is the lI1WV211'll source from which there is born all virtue and strength of character. The students of this school are to receive as part of their education such training as shall lead tl1e1n into a rich Christian experience. Bible study, prayer, worship, Christian work, and obedience to Christian principles, are a means to this end. Seeking first the Kingdom of God is made a working principle of living. XVhen this is done such virtues as love, joy, humility, honesty, kindness. and faithfulness are developed. XVith faith directed toward Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, good character is assured. B., B. s., M. D. CLAYTON C- WEBER, M. D. Lecturer on Tuberculosis B. S. at Wabash College, M. D. at Rush Medical Lecturer on Neurology and Psychiatry College. House Physician, Mennonite Hospital Kansas University School of Medicineg Interneship, St. Mary's Mercy Hospital, Gary, Ind. The Mennonite Church some years ago increased its scope of missionary work by entering the med- ical field. There were those who had the vision to see the need for providing a place where the young women of the church might be trained in the nursing profession, Today we have an institution that as a physical plant is as good as any in the country, and as a training schooi holds a high place. For some time it has been the conviction of those responsible that there is a need for a resident physician, preferably one that has the interests of the church primarily at heart. The immediate need of the institution was in the matter of records. This was my especial duty in the past four months, and necessitated that I take the history and make a physical examination of each patient, so that I could re- cord the essential data for permanent record. This is done for the sole purpose of increasing the efficiency of the institution, and is part of the work in every Standardized hospital in the country. Any hospital that applies for standardization is visited by the representative of the American College of Surgeons, who in- vestigates the physical plant and equipment of all departments, the records, qualifications of the staff, the ethical standards the staff has adopted, and then on the basis of his report and recommendations the institution is standardized, or put on the temporary list, or rejected. Our institution is rated very well as regards the nurses' training school, the various departments and laboratories, and the qualifications and practices of the professional men. There has been a question in the mattter of records, not regarding those that were completed, but too many were not completed. It is only natural that in some instances the patient does not see why the resident need get the his- tory and make the physical examination, because the private physician already knows all about the case. In order for a program to be worthwhile there must be close cooperation between the resident and the family physiciang the latter doing all he can to make the resident's time of practical value in providing him with actual medical and surgical work, and in advising his patients as to the duties and value of the resident. In the future a program may be Worked out which will be mutually beneficial to all. The administrative forces of the institution, the work and professional attitude of the nurses, and the opportunity to get well acquainted with this part of our missionary work, have made my stay here very beneficial. I will watch with interest the further progress and development of our Christian service through the avenues of the hospital here and the service of our ytlllllfff People who will utilize the practice of medicine and surgery as a means to an end and not merely as an end in itself. Friends and kinsmen of the class of 1934, hearken unto the words that I shall speak: o January, 1931-Word came unto us saying, get thee out of thy country and from thy kindred and from thy fathers house into a land that I will shew thee, and I will make of thee a useful nurse. o September TfIt came to pass as we traveled from far countries we reached the land of La Junta and abode there three years. uSeptember 11-A voice came unto us saying, as- semble yourselves and comeg draw near together ye who have come to join us for this night ye shall be invited to the hills. Behold, our dietitian has pre- pared for us a program and a feast. 0 September 28-Of long assignments there is no end and much study is a weariness to the probationer. o October 1-So said we, let us depart unto the hills and make merry and eat and drink. Weird stories were told of angels on horseback, the stars, and grave yards. Alas, when the wood is burned the fire goeth out, so each nurse departed unto her own room. o November 16- Arise, work, for the light is come and the cries of the suffering can be heard in the land. So we labored on our first day of duty. 0 November 1SfNow we twelve were of one purpose and of one speech and we said one to another, go to, let us give medicines and speedily cure the sick. oNovember l9ACome now, let us reason together, saith our instructress. CHAP o September l5!VVhat is the cause that the former days were better than these? Behold, the seniors have gone to Denver. oOctober l-Man has sought out many inventions and doctors delight in lecturing thereof, but we in- creased in wisdom and knowledge. oApril 1-In these days were two of our members ill and it came to pass after our class doctor exam- ined them, they went forth from us to regain their out the way of the plains to her with friends near by. more virtuous than a junior? A sister-in-the-profession has gone to dwell with a maker of medicines and a mixer of drugs. e September 12-In the evening we say, what profit doth a nurse get in all her labors. One patient cometh and another passeth away, but their beds remain to be carbolized. 0 September 13-But with the rising of the sun we rejoice in our labor of love. 0 September 15-The sisters of the class of 1934 have reunited in Denver. e September 207Rejoice, Oh seniors, in the days ot thy affiliation! oOctober 15-For in much wisdom is much grief. But the seniors rebelled against us and said, as we live, we will pursue you and ye shall know that we, the seniors, have spoken it. Who can withstand a junior in the evil day 'F Woe unto her that striveth with them. oJune 15-Verily for three months we must be parted, for some say among us, let us go forth there- fore unto Denver that our experience might be in- creased and that our minds might be established in knowledge. o June 7 - To everything there is a reason: A time to love, a time to speak, a time to embrace, a time to get. Verily, verily, I say unto you, one maiden has been gotten. T E lt III. 0 October 20-We have climbed Mt. Lookout, we have drunk water and eaten dry sandwiches, the soles of our feet are tender and cabbage patches by the way- side cause us to turn up our noses. 0 December 15-We, ourselves, awake early and study for examinations. o March 15-We were glad when they said unto us. get thee back unto La Junta. e April 15-Love not sleep lest ye neglect the publi- cation of the annual. o May 1fNo senior knoweth the future but we abide in the hope of a Junior-Senior banquet, senior sneak day, and graduation exercisesg but greater than these is our desire to be always ready to serve. CLASS HISTORY 0 Here we were-eight of us-September 15, 1932, at the Mennonite Hospital and Sanitarium Training School, l.a Junta, Colorado. VVe were here. Others were aware of our presence, not in an excited or worried manner, but rather in a serene and tran- quil manner. Wie were not ai class to, at first sight, arouse vague apprehensions. o We became acquainted with the student body, and with the faculty at an outdoor party held for us at the City Park. Here, too, we received our first true understanding of the spirit of the training school-the spirit of service guided by the teachings of Christ. s On Monday our classes began, and with them premonitions of hard work. Nevertheless, with high courage and quiet determination to win, we accepted the silent challenge knowledge made to us and are meeting' ii valiantly. o Upon being told that Dr. Hansen was to be our class doctor, the perspective of our training days was materially brightened. Under his expert care we have so far passed the successive hurdles that sickness presents to our profession with an enviable record oi' good health. Our satisfaction was complete when Miss Good expressed her willingness to shoulder the responsibility of class sponsorship. 0 October 129, we all remember, for then we received our uniforms-white ones. The first white uniforms to replace the stripes in the history of theinstitution. At this time, too, our practical work on the floors began. XVhat a thrill! For were we not making def- inite progress toward realizing our ambition? o Our Small victories and defeats we celebrated alike with ice cream parties, candy parties, or some similar diversiong our victories from sheer happi- ness, our defeats to again restore our buoyant spirits that we might the better perform our duties on the morrow. 0 September inevitably comes again. We are juniors now, with only six of us left. 0 VVe are given graver responsibilities. Our work in the special departments, in the operating room, in the obstetrical department and in the laboratory begins. o VVe feel that it is quite evident that the following verse applies to us: VVell done thou good and faith- ful nurse, thou hast been dependable in a few things, we will make thee responsible over many things. o Nevertheless we are happy for We can truly Say with Carlyle, Blessed is the man who has found his work: let hiin ask no other blessedness. He has a work, a life purposeg he has found it and will follow it. -CHARITY YODER 29 CLASS OF 36 BACK ROW D Amstutl D1111111 O I b11y11eI F11er I11'1hO 1 Eseh M10 M1911 111 KJIOSS ROS611HC1 lXeL1 H EXSte1 ThOm1s Okl1 1+ROlNT ROXV L Thut 1-11111121 kan W Kraupoel COlOr111O 511111159 1,o'O xlllllll IX'lL1f1 1111111 bDOl'lbUl L M111er Goshen Ind ORGANIZATION 11 1111f1l11 In 1 1111Oe1 I1st111 1 Thut 1 111 I 11111 1111191 1111111111 1xa111l111.111 1'1eS1111 111 1'10H111l111' ben et 111 5111111411 Cl A55 F1 OVVER DAP1 ODIL CLASS COLORS GRFEN AND GOI D NIOTFO HL GOLTH BEFORE CLASS HISTORY hlowlng, f1On1 111e blue Of '1 CO1111 11111 '-111 the Sep te111ber sun Wu 11111 weleomed '1 moup Of n111e tl 1ve1 S11111e11 5,1119 11110 11111 followed 13111111155 le1d111g flO1Tl Qlght E1lffGl6l1t StL1LQ 11 11l1wa1S w111ch l1OW lT16lgG 11110 one At 1l1e e1111'1nce of Ou1 116W t1'11l we were g1eeted 111 B1g 5151615 whose I1 1tu1211 f11e11c1 f1on1 Ou1 0116111113 11'1thw 13 We 11111 1101 t1lNE1GC1 fll Wlthlll the 52,1165 of thls new h1511w11 u11t1l we e1n1e to the house of 1ece11 11011 H1311 we spent 1 1118151111 hou1 1v1111 b1u11e11t COUl'1C11 11111 S1111 1611111115 1v111t 1'l'1Fl11l l9l Of 111-201111 1 1 should 111161 111111 111 Ou1 111196 1e11S JOUIH 1 T11ne11 w Lb 111e 1C1V1C,9 1glV8l'1 ux by Ou1 more GXIJBI Ieneed tellow 111161613 BefO1e Sfllldllltt, us O11 Ou1 w'11 ref1esh111e111 for Ou1 bodlee w'1s set before 511011 11 IN the dlstunce we 11111 traxeled when we WHS C111-.ulfed 111 1 11e11Se forest of stu1111s wO111 1111 111111e111S.11t 11 11S1me111s 'Ol 111110 V11 i1l1eI 11111 1111111111111 1 tlle B 111 t'1l11 0t11L1 111111 1111111S O1 6l1COU1lD81118111'. we 511 111111 111,.,ethe1 11111 f1111111 en111,:,e11 110111 the 101681 m1ze 11he1e 11e Igllll found Su11sh111e n1111g1e11 1111111 clouds Hexe one of Ou1 g1Ou11 1166111113 tl1e 11111 ot 11e1 fO1111e1 111111111 11 left us 11111 Ou1 con11111111111111v1 11 Of 611d6LV0l Flght tr11.1l1rs 111eSSe11 1111 611K,Ol111tG1111,, Steep h111s of 11s11onS111111t1 11111 Nlevx PIOCLHUIGS 1 :Sk1l1 But the s11111t of SGINICQ t 11e1e11 111 S QO11S1fll1l1W w1t11 61'1COl111g1l1g wh1S11e1s Ye1 11e1e 11111 thele 11110116 these 1111111S 11111 111l1S we 1111e found laughlng, t1ee t1111,a,1,11 111OO11S Ot 11le1su1e 11111 LHJOXIHBIIIN -XS 11e followed these S116-1111s tl1e1 lel us 11111111g 10111011105 1o1111t1eS 1111 1O m'111v 1 11le11S1nt lf1Ou1 111 1Ow11 11111 111u11tr1 home One 65118011111 1116111 L11111e1OuS 511121111 led uS one 11'11 111 111a1 to the l110l11'l11l11b 11he1e f111 11 whole 1111 we fefxsted 11u1 Souls on 171.11111 '11111 11111111 e NN IX 1111 1 1111 u1111111 ted 1 e e 11111 111 1 me xll 1 1 N1 10 1,111 le 111 us 111111 u11e11111p, S111 LDNA -XNIbT11 TL 9 v- 4' '11 ' 2 . -1 - ' ' '. The educational department of the hospital is lo- cated on the first floor and consists of a class or lecture room, demonstration room, practice ward, and library or study hall. The high school labora- tory is used for chemistry, the hospital pathological laboratory for anatomy and bacteriology, the main kitchen for dietetics. Other teaching facilities con- sist of blackboard, anatomical charts, complete ster- ioscopic atlas of anatomy, adult size chase doll, and good reference library. The equipment in the demonstration room and practice Ward provide ample opportunity for the nurse students to practice each nursing procedure before attempting to serve the patients in the wards. The course of study covers three years: the pre- paratory or freshman year covers mostly theoretical and practical instruction in the care of the sick and 341 the associated basic sciencesg the junior and senior years provide practical experience in the different departments of the hospital with class and demon- strations in subjects correlating with these services. The staff doctors supply lectures on the diseases and the supervisor of the corresponding department sup- plelnents the lecture with class discussion and dem- onstrations, emphasizing the nursing care. To im- press the idea that the patient is the center of thought in the nursing World, special case studies are made an important supplement to class Work. Thus procedures and routine fall into their proper relationship. Six months of clinical experience with correspond- ing theory is obtained through affiliation with the Denver General Hospital School of Nursing, Denver, Colorado. Our educational program is approved by the Colorado State Board of Nurse Examiners and will give the students a foundation for any specialization they may later undertake. NORA M. MILLER, R. N. The unit consists of a lying-in room, delivery room, sterilizing room, doctors' room, nursery, nur- sery bath room, and isolation room. The delivery room has ei north and west exposure which insures proper light and ventilation, In the sterilizing room there are large steam stcrilizers which contain hot and cold sterile water. A spacious blanket Warmer affords warm blankets and beil linen for both mother and baby. Sterile solu- tions for regular or emergency treatment, are al- ways kept ready and at the proper temperature for immediate use. 0 0 The nursery has ten basinettes. The room is large and has a south exposure. From the main hall there are large windows through which relatives or visi- tors may see the babies, This is a measure of pre- caution. Student nurses of our school are required to have three months training in this department. The time is divided equally so that each nurse has the experience of caring for the new born and post- partum care of the mother. According to the laws of our State Board of Nurse Examiners, student nurses are allowed a certain amount of training in assisting the doctor with home deliveries This experience is valuable to nurses who plan to enter mission Work, or to do home nursing. Our aim is to teach the student nurses of our school to do their part in helping to make Mother- hood Safe for Mothers. ADA ISABELLE BURKHAHT, R. N. Many of our read- ers will be interested in knowing what constitutes our spiritual ministry. The body is the temple of God's Spirit, and to render service to physical man is a good work. The Great Physician used the ministry of healing as an approach to manis eternal soul. By helping men to recognize their spiritual need and in leading them to the source of help, We embrace our fullest op- portunity. A weekly schedule for religious service is follow- ed, with few variations from time to time. At 6:30 every morning, the nurses and other workers as- semble in the hospital dining hall for a short period of worship before breakfast. A hymn is sung, the scripture lesson read, and prayer offered by one of the group. Each individual contributes a part to the morning worship by serving in turn as leader of the devotional period. We follow the daily reading as outlined in the Sunday School quarterly. When the nurses leave the dining room at 7:00 the next ten or fifteen minutes are utilized in a devotional service with the patient. Usually indivi- dual assignments are made to each nurse, unless there are several in a ward, then she may conduct the service for the group. On every Vifednesday and Sunday morning, in- stead of reading and prayer, the devotional period is spent in group singing in the halls of both floors of the hospital and at the sanitarium. The Holy Bible is also placed within reach of every patient who is at all able to read for himself. Regular Sunday morning services are held at the sanitarium so that the patients who are able may attend both Sunday School and preaching. Requests of patients are often granted, and whenever possible special services are arranged for when the oppor- tunities come to us. Every member of the institutional personnel is urged to attend all services of the local church, Sun- day morning and evening, and the mid-week prayer meeting. The record of our Lord's earthly life teaches us the importance of communion with the Father, there- fore daily private devotion is encouraged and we are frequently reminded of this sacred privilege, Cast your bread upon the waters, and ye shall find it af- ter many days. Ecc. II:1. MARY E. HOSTETTER, R. N. O, Lord, my God, I dedicate, for thine own sake Myself to thee, for this great work I undertake. Take, then, my eyes and teach them how to see The clearest Way to nurse the sick for Thee, My hands, guard them, and show them how to prove How kind and gentle is a nurse's love. Guide thou my feet-give swiftness to their tread In answering every call from the poor suffererls bed. Touch Thou my lips, guard Thou my tongue, Uttering only words of kindness to each one. Gird me with strength, that I my task may bear, l-lelp me to play the part in life without a fear. O Lord, I pray, that coming face to face with death I may have faith and hope withieach one's dying breath, And when Iim a 'night nurse, please to guardimy actions. Be near my patients and watch by their side. O Lord, I ask Thee, hear me while I pray- Be in mewthrough me-with me-all the Way. VIRGINIA HOMANS 49 1 X2 , Xp ffvuxi, xx Qifkxcfv 49-L. Time to get ready for breakfast. NVhat a grand morning! That shower last night freshened things up wonderfully. Perhaps it Won't be so hot today. There goes the 6:25 bell. Time to be going. I sec that several of the 3-11 girls are out for an early game of tennis. I'd enjoy a game again: however, when I'm working split shift on surgical floor with so many patients as we have now, I think I get all the exercise I need, especially dur- ing this hot weather. I Owe the Lord a Morning Song, what an ap- propriate song to sing at devotion this morning. Somehow it gives me the needed inspiration at the beginning of a busy day as this one will undoubt- edly be. There are three major operations and a nursery full of babies, besides what may have come in during the night. This is Wednesday so we sing on the floors in- stead of having private devotion with each patient. There are several request songs this morning. The patient in 316 wants us to sing If I Could Hear My Mother Pray. In his suffering no doubt hc thinks of his mother who is miles away. Miss Merril looks tired this morning, but no wonder. According to her report they must have had a wild night-two emergencies, a new baby, one medical patient, and surgical filled up. I'm :sure the night girls are glad to see the day force come on. Four patients are assigned to me this morning -two post-operatives, a fracture case, and one of the new patients for surgery. I shall have plenty to keep me busy. My fracture patient will take over an hour's time4those fracture beds! VVhy must people fall off of barns and ladders! My new patient must have his bath first. He goes to surgery at eight-thirty. What a strapping big fellow he is. He must be at least six inches longer than the bed. I wonder if he is one of these men who insists on having his bed look as though a cyclone had struck it, I really don't blame any- one for not wanting his toes smashed flat from the covers, but I do like to have my beds look fairly respectable, at least. You see I know that our doctors are very observing and even notice :auch trifles as a square corner. By the way, my patient who had a ruptured appendix has an order for continuous ice bag to lower abdomen, and I absolutely must keep that filled because he is Dr. Merlin's patient and one of his favorite hobbies is to find hot ice bags or cold water bottles. No. 331 seems so uncomfortable, I must take care of her next. Her dressings and binder are saturated. Dr. Jansen will soon be here to irrigate her incision and change dressings, then I can get her all cleaned up. But how will I ever get her bed changed. She is almost as broad as the bed and too sore to help move herself. She must weigh around two hundred pounds.-My, I'm glad I'm skinny. Miss Logan says the only way to get this pa- tient on a clean sheet is to transfer her to a clean bed-so here goes. That was a real task, but 1 know she feels much better. VVhat a satisfaction to make a patient feel clean, cool, and comfortable, it repays one for all the efforts put forth. It's getting late. Answering lights always puts one back with the regular work. Here comes Dr. Connell and the supervisor isn't here. I hope he doesn't ask for any foreign article this morning. Making rounds with a doctor isn't the nerve rack- ing procedure now that it was when I was a fresh- man. How well I recall my probie days. The first time I helped do a dressing I was nearly petrified with fear. When asked for another package of cuts my heart nearly stopped, because I couldn't imagine what a cut might be. Next comes the boy with the punctured abdo- men. At last we can give him a few sips of water. The poor fellow has suffered terribly from thirst the last two days. Yesterday he tried to drink from his flower vase and hot water bottle. It was pathe- tic to hear him beg for a drink. Here is my ether patient from the operating room, I haven't done a bit of charting yet: 318 isn't finished, and my fracture patient is still Wait- ing for her bath. If only I were two people instead of one. Dinner time, and I actually managed to get my work up to date. Now for an hour of class, then one and a half hours of leisure, until time to go back on duty at 3:30. Is it really 3:15 already. I had planned to do so much this afternoon, and all I did was sleep. Another grand rush to get my evenings work done-temperatures to take, trays to serve, backs to rub, fix up patients, chart, answer lights, and lecture at 7:30. This hall looks like a Christmas tree this even- ing with lights popping on everywhere. No. 328 is all upset because soup was served on her tray, and she doesn't like soup. Our bachelor patient is out of humor because his light wasn't answered stat. Mrs. Castleton is crying for her mother, even the babies are raising their voices in protest, I wonder what is wrong with everyone. Seven o'c1ock! here is Miss Merril, and we may go as soon as our work is finished. But after lecture I must work on my case study, and get my obstetrics lesson for tomorrow. Ten-thirty-the close of another day. It has been an unusually busy one. My mind and body are weary, but 'ere I fall asleep, I wonder, have I done my best today?
