This year’s squad, featuring six girls and three boys, climaxed a summer of hard practice witha session at Hibbard’s California Clinic of Champions. After an unforgettable week, the group was ready to start the season with a great new style. Under the direction of head cheerleader Jane Arthur, the Varsity Cheerleaders brought a new kind of spirit to La Jolla fans. Overall (5-4) League (4-2) - NTeey ee Ea Varsity LootBall The saying went ‘“The Vikes are Dynamite” and they proved to be as the 1972 Varsity Football team finished second in their last year of Western League play. Having beaten the tough powers of Point Loma, Clairemont, University and Mission Bay, the team just missed a C.I.F. playoff berth. Often outmanned and outsized, the Vikings showed everyone that they could play equally with any team. Led by quarterback Don Gravette and tailback Pete Taylor, the Viking offense penetrated continually into enemy territory. The soccer-style kicking of Rolf Benirschke also proved to be a great asset to the offense. Dependable Kent MacDiarmid anchored both the offensive and devensive lines while getting consistent help from Rick Berg, Cole Francis, Kelly Walsh, Brian Schulte, John Cummings and Dennis Burtraw. For h ead coach Gene Edwards and assistant Bull Trometter, this season was a rewarding and successful one. Left: Most Valuable Player, Pete Taylor, finds running room. Led by Dan Carlsson, Jan Johansson, Phil Sasso, Gabriel Olivares, Eric Larson and Dan Rosenblatt, the Viking harriers breezed past Lincoln, Castle Park, Mission Bay, Hoover, Point Loma, University, and Kearny. The highlight of the season for the runners was bringing home the first place trophy from the fifth Aztec Invitational Cross Country Meet. The Vikings finished the three mile course with a team time which was thirty seconds faster than their nearest competitor. Outstanding singles players included Robin Harris, Laura Gilbert, Wendy Ghio, and Sharon Reeves. Contributing to the doubles strength were Wendy Stanley and Darcy Delano, Sally Plachta and Alwine Loeffler, Cindy Coleman and Joanne Fletcher, Kathy Russell, Ann Van Buskirk, and Bonnie Read. They proved to be just that when they competed in the annual Christmas tournaments. The team was thought to be too small, but with balanced scoring and great hustle the Vikings showed that their lack of height would not hurt them. In the Kiwanis Tournament, La Jolla placed second, losing the championship game in the final moments. Led by Geoff Northrop and Tony Russell, who were both picked to the Kiwanis all-star team, the Vikes continued on to the Baron Optimist Tournament. There they finished fourth just behind the county’s top teams, Patrick Henry and Helix. With these strong showings and a 9-5 non-league record, hopes continued to rise. The team’s impressive start earned them a ranking of fourth in the county as they moved into the race for the Western League title. Upper; Rob Schupp gets clobbered as he drives in for a lay-up, Lower; Jeff Haskett squeezes between two Kearny defenders and draws a foul. 138 As league play began, the team continued its winning ways with a big upset victory over Kearny. This win put the Vikes in a three-way tie for first place and a good chance to go to the C.I.F. play-offs. In a mid-season slump, however, which saw the team lose three straight games, they dropped to fourth place in the standings. Fighting back with victories over Clairemont, Point Loma, Mission Bay and Crawford, the Vikings again moved into contention for a play-off berth. Throughout the season the team was led by Jeff Haskett, Geoff Northop and Tony Russell. These three players all finished in the top ten league scorers and carried La Jolla to its fine record. Haskett’s superior driving and ball handling ability, Russell’s fine outside shooting and Northrop’s all around excellence were supported by John Brand, Don Gravette and Rob Schupp. Scoring clutch points and playing stingy defense throughout the season, these players balanced La Jolla’s basketball team and contributed to many of its wins. Credit must also be given to the other members on the team without whom a C.I1.F. play-off spot, and a victory over Marian leading to quarterfinals in the Sports Arena, could not have been won. Upper, High-scoring Tony Russell shoots over a Morse defender for two points; lower, La Jolla’s outstanding center, Geoff Northrop, easily gets the tip from Madison’s heralded Rock Lee. 139 Right; Jeff Haskett drives in for a lay-up against Kearny to help give the Vikes a 54-51 victory, Lower left; Geoff Northrop hits a jump shot for two points against tough Morse as Tony Russell looks on, Lower middle; Rob Schupp shoots over a Madison defender and gets two points for La Jolla. 140 Left; Don Gravette scores a basket against Madison while Jeff Haskett watches, lower; Cole Francis puts the pressure on a Madison player and forces a bad pass. 141 142 John Brand Robb Cranny Cole Francis Don Gravette Jeff Haskett Mark Hodo Mike Johnson Kent MacDiarmid Geoff Northrop Allen Russell Tony Russell Rob Schupp Top; Coach Eveleth instructs his team during a time out, bottom; Tony Russell draws a foul while going in for a lay-in. They matured with each game under Coach Davis and pulled out many close contests. Led by Jamie Loomis and Jim Kerman, the junior Vikes ended the season with a very fine record. Continually praised by both the fans and the coaches, many individuals should move up and help out the varsity next year in its Coast League debut. They trailed county champions, Point Loma and Madison despite winning sixteen games and losing only six. Hampered early in the season by the loss of star fullback, Bob Humphrey with torn ligaments, and Gabriel Olivares with a broken foot towards the end of the schedule, the Vikes were still able to display poise and to play good soccer. They dominated the rest of the league despite their losses to Point Loma and Madison with winning streaks of four or more games. Things got even brighter after league play ended, when the team was invited to play in two big tournaments; the PSA tournament and the United States National tournament. Standing out all season were Rolf Benirschke, Jerry Clark, Jeff McCoy, Rafael Mecina, Gabriel Olivares, and David and Doug Y oungdale. Chances for the C.I.F. crown will indeed favor the Vikings next year, since there will be a mature group of Varsity players returning and many capable individuals moving up from the Junior Varsity squad. Upper, Gabriel Olivares intently watches as his head shot flies towards the goal over the head of a Clairemont defender. Soccer Making the C.I.F. playoffs in their first year of organized competition, the Junior Viking soccer team performed well all year long. Their 1-0 victory over Point Loma late in the season enabled the team to meet Montgomery in the Championship game and was a fitting conclusion to a tough schedule. ‘The group was made up predominantly of sophomores and was led by Jim Killion, Kurt Wagner and Hunt Williams. Standouts throughout the season were Ed Johnson, Todd Moran, Hans Newman, Brian Schulte and Bruce Weisman. The team was also helped by fine instructing from coaches Smith and Edwards who spent much time developing the group into a strong contender in virtually all the meets they entered. Although the Vikes wrestled the first part of the season without a man to fill the 103 lb weight class, they still managed to score high consistently against their opponents. Towards the middle of the season, Ciarco Poscablo joined the team and did an excellent job wrestling in the empty class. Concluding a very successful season, the Varsity wrestling team was amply rewarded for all of the practice and hardship yielded by each member. They placed several individuals high in the Western League tournament and challenged most of their rivals. The swimmers largely responsible for the team’s fine record were junior Skip Slade, who is one of the fastest swimmers in San Diego County, senior Dan Graifer, and sophomores Mike Foley and Bill Seligmann. Add to these athletes the depth of John Cummings, Peter Kerman, John Hagey and Mike Arno and La Jolla had its finest swim team ever. The County Finals proved to be the first tough test for the young team, and with the experience they gained, La Jolla should do extremely well next year. The intermediate team, pictured at left, includes, left to right, Kathy Foster, Stacy Baldwin, Jill Ducein, Carol Nau, and Terri Bailey. On the team’s new vaulting board are Julia Gittes, standing, and Cindy Winroe, sitting. A new addition to La Jolla gymnastics this year was the advanced team. The team, pictured at left, includes, left to right, Linda Stark, a stand-out on the balance beam, Laura Sim, featured on the uneven parallel bars, Marian “Olga” Eder and Jane Arthur, specializing in floor-exercise, and limber Kristi Johnston, in front, another floor- exercise competitor. David Cordtz, who was perhaps the finest all-around runner, proved his ability by competing in the high jump, long jump, both hurdle events and the discus. The hurdles were Cordtz’s best events, and when he teamed-up with Kelly Walsh, La Jolla had its best pair of hurdlers seen in a long time. Bob Barkley and Mike Nova also helped this year in the sprints by running the 100 and 220 and many relays. In the field events, La Jolla was led by strong high jumpers, pole vaulters and long jumpers. Brad Lee and Tom Reed were the two most capable long jumpers. The pole vaulting pair of Olaf Moen and Lon Bevers reached new heights for La Jolla as Moen broke the school record. Jim Geddes and Walter Miller were regular performers in the high jump with Geddes consistently jumping over six feet. The Viking middle distance runners showed even stronger abilities as they were unequaled throughout the league. Leading this excellent group of runners were Dan Carlsson, who is one of the fastest milers in the county, Steve Elias, Jan Johansson, Dick Peterson, Phil Sasso and Curt Stephenson. Individually each of these runners ran very well, but when they were put together on relay teams they became unbeatable. They proved their superiority at the National City Relays by winning 25 gold medals and the team championship. Varsity BaseBall Winning was a specialty this year for La Jolla High sports. The individual teams compiled more wins than any other single season in the history of La Jolla High athletics. Each sport was abundant with talented individuals with the Varsity Baseball Team being no exception. Andy Bertrem, Dennis Burtraw, Tony Russell and George Townsend led this fine group of players into what was one of La Jolla’s best seasons in recent years. The Vikings were plagued with poor fielding early in the season, but with strong pitching and consistent hitting the team fought back and developed into a contender for the League’s top positions. Andy Bertrem led the pitching staff and often did not allow a single earned run in a game. He was helped out by Mark Farrar and Tom Watson who did excellent jobs both as starting and relieving pitchers. The potent bats of Dennis Burtraw, Kelvin Nettleton and George Townsend accounted for most of La Jolla’s scoring power though each member of the team was capable of hitting the ball. With the end of a very respectable season, the team looks forward to next year and the return of most of its starters. Mission Bay, Grossmont and Patrick Henry offered the strongest competition the Viking netmen faced but never seriously challenged La Jolla’s superior team. Behind the outstanding play of Denny Bond, Dana Caledonia, Ted Hagey, Moore Huffman, Gonzalo Nunez and Ted Williams, La Jolla’s ‘Tennis Team captured the Western League title and the C.I.F. crown for the fourth year in a row. They competed in the Ojai Valley Tournament where they have won the Griggs Interscholastic Trophy for the last three years and in the Dudley Cup.
