I E ff 750 Nautilus k ZMi J MLa Jolla, Californlia' S g Elections, representative voice, and just laws are all characteristics of a working democracy. La Jolla's student government possesses all these .characteristics and exercises them under the wise legislation of the Student Council, and Mr. Rossney, the ASB advisor. We also have a second period representative from every class that meets regularly with the Student l Council. In this assemblage, opinions are placed in the open for discussion. Under the guidance and coun- sel of Mr. Rossney, this organization copes with many difficulties and solves innumerable problems. Auxiliary committees help maintain order in and out of the school building and are an invaluable aid in student control. Free secret elections, coupled with the other democratic practices mentioned above, mark student government as a true parallel to our national government and provide wonderful background for civic- minded citizens of the future. Certainly, Mr. Rossney deserves much of the credit for the efficiency of the Student Government. Without such a great and understanding advisor, where would the Associated Student Body be? The prayer below fits the ideals that Mr. Rossney is continually trying to impress upon his students. Help us appreciate the brilliancy Of American democracy, lmbue our spirit with cooperation In public affairs, lnfuse in us an awareness Of future civic responsibilities. Something new, however, was added this year. This, of course, was the Christ- mas Card Delivery Service. Anyone who wanted a Christ- mas card mailed to a friend at La Jolla High simply dropped it in the Girls' League mail box and they made sure the right people received them. This is evidenced by the fact that La Jolla had its best season this year in a long time. Many of these Sen- iors have been working towards a suc- cessful season since the ninth grade when they played J.V. football under Pete Clark. This season under Harry West and Gene Edwards they have finally achieved success. In past years the backs were usually given most of the credit for victory. This year the Senior linemen deserved a more than equal share of the credit. The line- men, referred to as the workhorses, led by Coach Gene Edwards, developed into nasty wildcats, not willing to accept defeat. Together with the backs they did an outstanding job this year. The offen- sive line led by Seniors Paul Ganster, Dick Barnes, Phil Martinez and Dave Heaslett opened many holes for senior backs Don Holder, and Jon Bennett. Defensively, the Seniors held their own with giants like Dave Osborn. This year the Senior Lettermen have de- veloped a new spirit at La Jolla - the winning spirit- and they hope that this spirit will continue at L.J. for many years to come. If all Viking coaches were asked to name the persons they considered the best athletes at La Jolla this year, they would give varied opinions of course, but most likely they would all agree that 17-year old Don Holder is one of the most out- standing. He is pictured at the right hold- ing the Player of the Week Award. He has received numerous other awards besides this including Most Valuable La Jolla Football Player of the Year. Although the won-lost record was not the most outstand- ing, the Vikings made a good showing with varsity lettermen: Tim Dragila, Mike Marlow, John Hoobler, Greg Gessay, Mike Gay and Jim Ashcraft. The J.V. team also boasted a strong team and won all meets but one. The cross-country course was one of the most grueling on the west coast, and when they visited another course, they did very well. At the Mt. Sac Invitational, the Vikings finished 3rd among 12 teams. The whole team will be back again next year, to assure us another good year in the cross country competition. VARSITY BASEBALL The Junior Varsity Baseball team this year is composed of mostly ninth and tenth graders. We have played some good games, defeat- ing the best teams of the Western League. These fellows have a strong desire to play the game and look forward to helping the varsity next year. La Jolla's Baseball team came in first out of sixteen schools in the Lions Club Limited Division. They started with a 3-0 win over Ocean- side followed by wins over San Dieguito 6-0 and Granite Hills 5-1 to win the championship. They also beat Vista in a very close game of 6-5. For the championship La Jolla received a permanent trophy and each player received an individual trophy. In over all play La Jolla's Baseball team has had eight wins, eight losses and one tie, but the season isn't yet half over. With the high spirit and hard workingskill of the players they have a very good chance for the Class A CIF playoffs. Their record is better than that of other schools. La Jolla's baseball team has a position as one of the hardest working teams in the league and with the J.V. players and five returning players they should keep this position. This year's Tennis Team, a powerful combination of depth and experience, is a to heav favorite to win both the TENNIS Bill Bethard Peter De Leon Lard Landon Rob McNown Bm Hultgen Jeff Crimmel Tom Hultgen Bm pangman Lester Stocten Joel Wiley Jim Manley P' Y Western League Team and Individual Championships. The team, not wanting to tarnish La Jolla High School's record of winning the Southern California Team Championship for the past three years and five times in the last six years, has a good chance to win the San Diego County Team Championship this year. Early in the season, the Viking strength was shown by its 4 wins and one loss. The Field Events are the strong point of the teamg the high jump bar has been at 6 feet and the pole vault bar at 12 feet. Running events are very strong in the sprints and middle distances. La Jolla has a good chance to win in the mile races. Coaches Mac- Laren and West are very proud of this year's track teams. For the first time, the San Diego Western League track finals were held at La Jolla on Scripps Field. There were many outstanding track per- formers and all fans enjoyed an exciting evening. vw X e ix at row Qleft to rightjz Peter nklin, Charles Giest, John mett, Bruce Patterson, Bob ey, Brian Chelardi. WRESTLING AND GYMNASTICS The Varsity Wrestling had 8 wins, 3 losses in all the matches and a 2-2 record in league matches. In the over all matches La Jolla beat some very big schools, San Diego 28-26, Hoover 26-22, Crawford 27-21. Also 3 wres- tlers out of 12 made it to the finals of San Diego county and all 3 placed in the top 4 in his weight. The J.V. went 9-2 in over all matches and came in first in league matches by having a 4-0 record. Gymnastics is a relatively new competitive sport in the San Diego area, and is steadily growing in popularity. It is different from other sports because it requires a combina- tion of grace, form, skill, and strength, quite different from other sports. Interest in gym- nastics is steadily growing and this sport will eventually be one of the top competitive ath- letic events of the school year. Even though the team was small this year, competition and interest were keen among the team members. The Class of '61 hopes to see a growing interest in gymnastics at La Jolla and hopes to see the Vikes become number 1 in the city in the near future.
