They were Virgil Grizzle, Ernest Ensminger, Donis Ross, Dorothy Conner, and Charles Marsh. After seven years of the hardest kind of labor these young men and young ladies became very proud and important eighth graders. The class that year was aug- mented by Martha Brown and Nola Gilbert. Martha moved here from the Fulton, Kansas, Grade School and Nola came from Gas City, Kansas. After receiving the diplomas which entitled them to admission to high school they entered upon another phase of school life. As freshmen the class consist- ed of twenty-three members, the largest it had been. The officers elected for the year were president, Charles Marsh, vice-president, Ernest Ensmingerg and secretary-treasurer, Betty Harrison. After taking all the knocks that freshmen usually takel the class definitely proved itself an asset to the school by placing some members in prominent positions. During the second year of high school, with Ernest Ensminger as president, the class entered into more of the activities of the school. Edgar Powell, Charles Marsh, and Ernest Ensminger were members of the basketball team that won the league tournament and gave promise of bigger and better things in fut- ure years for L.H.S. In March, 1945, Harvey Platt moved from Bronson, Kansas, to Join our class. In September, 1945, the second half of the high school career began for twelve Juniors at La Harpe. Charles Marsh was elected presidentg Ernest Ens- mlnger was elected vice-president and Donis Ross was elected secretary-treas- urer. In October Howard Clayton moved to La Harpe from Princeton, Kansas, which raised our class enrolltent to thirteen. On December ll, 1945, the class presented its first project which was e box supper. In all departments A the school activities of the year were mostly dominated by this class. On ii, April 12, 1946, the class presented a play, which was the best that had been gii seen here in several seasons. The play was entitled NHilarity House' and af- iid forded many laughs to those who attended. On May 3, 1946, the class honored X igi the senior class with the annual Junior-Senior Banquet which had a Dutch set- igl ting and theme and it was enjoyed by all. ELAEE FRUPHEEY It is the year l967 and a party is going full blast in the heart of the met- ropolis of La Harpe. Upon ringing the doorbell of the mayor's mansion, where the party is being held, 1 am surprised to be greeted, not by the butler, but by the mayor who is none other than that wizard of political science, the ln- ternationally famous rlgure, Russell Smart. Russell presents me to a gentleman with a very officious scowl upon his pan and rather thlck about the equator. I recognize him as Bud Stevenson, who hav- ing resigned his army commission, has succeeded Jenn Barnes as chief of police of La Harpef I next meet a rather heavy woman, who, I soon discover is Donis loss. ihe tells me she ls now the fat woman of Barnum and Bailey Circus. Over by the punch bowl, I notlce two very handsome gentlemen whom I remember as star athletes in high school. They are Harvey Platt, now batboy for the St. Louis Cardinal baseball team and HCorkyn Ensminger, water boy for the Kansas State track squad. Two beautiful young lBd16S, Martha Brown and Nola G1lD6PU,,m68t my vlslon. They are, as usual, having the tlme of their lives. Martha is as determined as ever to be the first woman presldent of the United States and Nola is her cam- pslgn manager. On the side Nola ls professor of whistling at the University of Lone Elm. I next perceive a HSUCLBMHH whose very countenance shows a great mind. I recognize him instantly as our ole CLSSS president, Charles Marsh. His degrees ln physics know no number, but his students have made him acquire that Nlaugh- ing on the outside, crying on the insldeu personality. Three young ladies next attract my attention and my host tells me they are Betty Henegar, Pauline Hamil, and Dorothy Conner. They have formed a singing trio and have taken over Kate Smith's show because of their ability to sing Hwhen the Moon Comes Over the Nountainn. The last classmate I meet is that husky young man I remember as Virgil Grlzzle. He recently won a corn husklng contest ln Alaska. I am about to bid my host adleu when I meet someone I don't remember so WBLL Then like a flash I see it ls Howard llayton, who is now permanent conductor of the Gas City Symphony Orchestra. They have played seventeen games of which they have won ten. The B team has played fourteen games, winning four Ol them. This year La Harpe had the honor of being host to the annual Marmaton Val- ley League Basketball Tournament, which was held in the La Harpe High School Auditorium on the evenings of February 12, 15, and 14. First and second teams were entered from the following six schools: Fulton, Moran, Elsmore, Uniontown, Bronson, and La Harpe. Officials for this tournament, Mr. Crane and Mr. Mc- Fall, were hired from a Fort Scott association. In the opening three games of the tournament La Harpe's B team was elimin- ated by Bronson's strong quintet, Fulton's B team was beaten by Moran, and Ful- ton's A team was defeated by Moran. The fourth and final contest of the eve- ning was a close and very hard fought battle between Bronson and La Harpe A teams. La Barpe won by the very close margin of 52 - 51 in an overtime period. In the second evening of battle, Elsmore's B team and Uniontown's B team were victors over Bronson and Moran. Elsmore subdued Moran in the third bBCtlB and La Harpe d8f68D8G Uniontown 50 - 65. On the evening of February 14, the final night of the tournament, a capa- city crowd of over 6Ou people jammed the bleachers of the auditorium to see the final championship games. The A and B team consolation games were played first. Moran's B team defeated Bronson and Unlontown's A team was victor by an ample margin over Moran. ln the two final games of the evening Elsmore's B team nosed out Uniontown ol - 27 and La Harpe's A team upset Elsmore 53 - 43 to win the honor of championship of the torunament. Immediately after the final game, Mr. Lancaster, host of the tournament, expressed his appreciation to the visiting teams, their coaches, and to the audience for their splendid cooperation throughout the tournament. Mr. Massey, PP8Sid3hC of the league, presented first and second place trophies to the win- ners and runners-up of both the A and B teams. The five first team seniors -- Virgil Grizzle, Howard Clayton, Ernest Ens- minger, Harvey Platt, and Charles Marsh -- have played their last game of bas- ketball for La Harpe High School. During the past four years, La Harpe's first team has shown a splendid record. In tournament play it has won the Marmaton Valley League Championship three out of four attempts and also has won the dis- trict tournament once. The latter entitled the team to attend the regional tournament that year. 4f'AF AF' ' if EF' ' 4'AQF gif -' A .5'i? 1 A' if 'kv T -. 'KK 'Fh. In. 4h. lm lh. lL 'lm lk. 'lll 'lu Il..'Wh. The custom was carried out as usual this year. The first few days of initiation the freshmen followed orders from a no- tice which the seniors posted on the bulletin board. These were also carried out by the new teachers, Mrs. Alta M. Ericson and Mr. Lyman C. Smith. On the last day of initiation the freshmen boys had to wear dresses, bon- nets, and girls' shoes and they carried bottles with nipples. The girls wore boys' clothes, carried pipes, and had their hair fixed so that it would not show at all. This was added to the things done the days before. Friday night the freshmen were to dress the same as they had during the day and come to the school house for a little fun. They marched into the audi- torium with Mrs. Ericson in the lead and Mr. Smith bringing up the rears They were seated upon the stage and the program began. The program consisted of a few stunts which were pulled to give the audience an hour of entertainment.
