LA HARPE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL i LA HARPE, ILLINOIS ? 1952 i La Ha Hi Z One hundred years ago it was impossible for everyone to receive a good education. From the first private seminary in the west end of La I-Iarpe to the school we have today has been a long hard road. The first school in La Harpe was taught in a blacksmith shop by a Miss Mary Loomis, who boarded with her pupils. The first school house was built in the early forties and is still standing---the old Catholic Church where Bill Bradshaw now lives. The Academy was built in 1858 by private enterprise and was replaced in 1899, and again in 1928. Another school building, the Seminary, was built in 1875 in the southwest part of the city. This building was set on fire and burned to the ground in 1889. The burning of the Seminary was a hard blow to the town but by liberal subscriptions the Methodist Conference Board was able to rebuild the building. With this annual we would also like to pay tribute to Miss Jenny Hillier, the oldest living graduate of La Harpe High School. Since her graduation there have been many changes in educational facilities and processes. How different it must have been---and the staff agrees that even though those were the good old days, they are going to be happy to remember our good old days, z 8- . Here is a group that receives little recognition for the time and effort they spend in running the school. We hear about the teachers, and we hear about the students, but few stop to remember that these men are responsible for the many activities that are enjoyed by the students. La Harpe students are grateful to these men for their enthusiasm, cooperativeness, and untiring efforts in making our school one of which we can most certainly be proud. The class of 1952 held their twentieth reunion at the beautiful Lamoine Valley State Park here in La Harpe yesterday. Floria Driskell, America's foreign ambassador to Russia was the only member of the class who was unable to attend. First to arrive was the great T. V. star, Bertha Negley, better known as Battlin' Bertha since she has become wrestling champion of the world. Close behind her came her husband, daring Dale Eddington, sensation of the auto racing world of the mighty midgets. Another celebrity, Javon Alton, singing member of the Grand Old Opry also came with Dale and Bertha. Also present was Robert Housewright who has fulfilled his lifetime dreams of becoming a military leader, his position, a scout master of the local scout troops. The 17 members are his own children, since he and his wife, the former Virginia Rodeffer did very well in having five sets of triplets. Another graduate, Lloyd Feikert, brought members of the Bouncettes of the Diamond Horseshoe to entertain for the day. Yes, Meatball Sellers, Jack Parrish, Jack and Jerry Brooks have got what it takes to be the stars of the Bouncettes, a peculiar style of dancing taught to them by the one and only Mr. Feikert. Eugene Keithley, the big time gambler and casino operator here in La Harpe arrived on time with his three cigarette girls, Rose Morton, Jane McConnell and Llewellyn Kerfoot. Carl Reeder, trying to out-fox the great Keithley, lost his Chevrolet dealership on a portable roulette wheel, always carried by Keithley in his Rolls Royce. Arriving in an ambulance due to injuries, the star half backs of the Chicago Bears, Gerald Chance and Clair Farquhar, spent the reunion in wheel chairs pushed by Georgia Sheffler and Jean Shoemate who are still determined to get a man. Joan Gill, head of the La Harpe Sanitation Department fstreet cleaner, was able to depart from his duties for the day to attend this reunion. His wife, Frances Bundy Gill says his job of street cleaning has sure been useful around the mansion. Jack Hensley, a new movie star, flew from Hollywood, but was unable to stay the entire day due to a new roll that he is playing. He has taken the place of comedian Jerry Lewis. Johnny Berlett, the current star of the Minneapolis Lakers, professional basketball champs of 1971, arrived with his wife, the former Shirley Elder, who is starring with the Minneapolis Bloomer Girls. James Owsley, editor of the New York Times, came flying in with his delivery boys, Richard Meyers and Charles Shipman. When Bob Shutwell and.Toe Anne Reed Shutwell arrived with children Elmore and Annie, the reunion livened up. A near catastrophe resulted when they put tacks under the tires of Nancy Thompson's yellow-cab. Nancy has the only taxi service around Lomax. Kayo Sutton, who has taken over Pop Bicels job with the broom at the high school was also present. 58 9 -N of All ABOARD FOR NEW ORLEANS! For five wonderful days the seniors lived a luxurious life, wandering around among the palm trees, seeing light houses for the first time, swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, enjoying the leisure that only the south could give. None of the seniors will ever forget that last night on the train, the cooking in the French restau- rants, or the salty swimming water. A climax to senior activities that left a sparkle in the eyes of every senior---a far cry from fifty years ago when such a thing would have been unheard of . I . I - 1 I , 154' Q 4.
