Q., ,,,. i i , 5 edicafiorz For the past four years, La Habra High School has stood as a symbol of progress cmd workman- ship to the surrounding community. Of course, this school could not have been built without the cooperation of many persons and agencies. Equally important to the progress made have been the staff, the faculty, and the board of trustees. Out of all those who have helped mold La Habra High into the creditable institution that it is today, we, the publications class, have chosen one who we believe stands as a symbol of its success. We have chosen a person who has been devoted to La Habra High and its students for the past four years, Because of his dedication to us, we have chosen to dedicate this, the 1957-58 HIELAN, to our principal, Mr. Pray, because of your loyalty, devotion, and achievements in behalf of La Habra High School. the students, and the faculty, we dedicate this, the 1957-58 HIELAN, to you. One aspect of Mr. Pray's devotion to La Habra is seen in his actions with the students. No student on the La Habra campus feels, at any time, that he is unwelcome in the principal's office. Mr. Pray is ready to give worthwhile advice to the student who asks for it. This feeling of warmth is also extended to the faculty at La Habra, and it is plainly evident that there is a strong bond of friendship between them and Mr. Pray. While relaxing from school, Mr. Pray enioys a wholesome family life with his wife and five children, often taking time to enjoy his favorite sport, skiing. 4 -. The teamwork of faculty, students and parents has made La Habra a truly happy high school. The good results we are arleady receiving re- garding the first graduating class from colleges and universities, as well as from employers, testify to the effective learning that is taking place. We are glad for the effort each one of you is making. We hope you in turn will be grateful for the inspiration and support you have received as a member of a strong and well established union district. We hope that with the obvious fine progress being made on physical fa- cilities, we may always strive for a program of spiritual and intellectual development second to none. On behalf of our Board of Trustees and their administrative of- ficers, permit me to express our very best wishes now and through the years ahead. Cordially yours, Stanley Warburton oar of Cmsfees E William Wylie Joe W. Johnson Francis N. Laird Chairman Clerk Virgil G. Morf D. Gordon McCom ber rizzcipa Joe Merlo Dean of Boys Dorothy Newton Dean of Girls Though this graduating class is the second in the short history of L.H.H.S., it is the first to spend four years on this campus. Your administration, faculty, and staff are proud to have worked with each of you as you have progressed from freshmen to seniors. In thinking of you as the first to spend four years as Highlanders, we hope you will meet the many future firsts with courage, strength, and iudgment. We hope to have trained you to undertake these challenges. Wilson SOPAOHZOVZ GMS 5 Bill Dickenson President In listing the activities of the Sophomore class of 1957-58 we find that they started the year off by selecting their class rings, in which the Starfire style was chosen by an overwhelming majority. The Sophomores showed tremendous school spirit at all of the pep rallies. Their dance, which was held in May, was also another one of the many accom- plishments. To plan activities for their class the Sophomore cabinet met every other week. Humor The Teacher Dick Evans President Luzior Glass In presenting The Junior class of 1958, we would like to mention iust some of the things of which they are very proud. Under the direction of class officers and class advisers, the Junior class had the fun of playing host and hostess to the Senior class for the Senior playnight. With the planning of the Junior-Senior prom came the cupcake sales put on by the Junior class girls. Junior class assemblies were called anal, with a large attendance, many plans were made for the year. We salute the Junior class of 1958 and the graduating class of 1959. The Junior class cabinet under president Dick Evans planned their year of 1958 with many wonderful ideas and plans. One was the terrific pep rallies held at noon in The gym. There were yelling contests between the classes, and the losing class had its president wear a sign saying, My Class has poor Spirit. An original idea introduced by the song and yell leaders was The use ot two outfits, one for games, and one for pep-rallies. Starting as Freshmen at the new La Habra High School, it was the first class to complete four years. As a Junior class it was the first to put on the Junior-Senior Prom, and it was the tirst Senior class at La Habra High School to have two semi-finalists in the' Na- tional Merit Scholarship Tests, a distinction of which the class was very proud. Under the leadership ot Senior Class President Leonard Blanchard, the class ot T958 had a very interesting year. Starting oft by winning the Student Body Card drive, they were reward- ed with a play night. Later on in the year the faculty-varsity basketball game was sponsored by the Senior class. This also proved to be a worthwhile activity. The seniors rounded out the year with the grad- uation ceremonies which were held in the La Habra High School stadium. WCLIZ OIZQ As the i958 HIELAN comes to an end luntil the Summer Supplementl, we hope the readers will stop to Think about all the people who, in cooperation with the publications class, helped this book become a reality. We vvant to thank Mr. Walter Pray for his interest in our achievement throughout the year. The faculty certainly deserves many bows from us for the cooperation and helpfulness given us on HIELAN endeavors. We wish to express our gratitude to Oracam studio of Orange who so efficiently met our photographic needs and to Yearbooks, Incorporated, in Monrovia, who published our yearbook for the second year. They and their staffs played an important part in bringing the yearbook to you. To the advertisers, whose support is essential to the production of this book, we say, Thank You. Their interest in La Habra High School is apparent as is their wish to deal with the young people of the community by advertising their merchandise in student publications. Although the reader rarely stops to realize it, all of these people are vital to a successful year- book. But the success of the book also depends upon the students who buy and read it and keep it for many years. They must like the book and believe it to be a fair representation of the year's activities, exemplifying the Senior Class. has 'nga 'Hi . 5 .43 r . ,. It is said that the hopes for next year's teams are running high as the summer season teams are in top shape. This year's swimming teams had a moderately successful season. The varsity squad had a very good year in comparison to prev- ious teams, and they are very proud to have finished in fourth place in Sunset League competition.
