Not pictured, Barbara Seeger. t f TIGERS The Tigers opened their season with the outlook of a good chance at the Blue Mountain title, though they were classified by some as inexperienced. The first game saw them tangling with the Nyssa Bulldogs. With the Bulldogs receiving the breaks of the game, it ended at 12-0 in favor of Nyssa. The following week found the Tigers hard at work in preparation for the non- conference game with Baker on the Tiger field. The white machine looked very good in this game, with a powerful running attack, although Baker passes were too much, and the game ended 18-6, with Baker in the winning column. The next week, the Caldwell veterans trotted off the field with a hard-fought vic- tory: 12-19. The game was a see-saw battle up to the latter part of the fourth quarter when the Cougars slipped through the Tiger defense and scored on a 68 yard scamper. On October 3, the spectators from La Grande and Hermiston saw some of the best football ever played by any high school team. With the favoring of the opponents, the Tigers were determined to prove them wrong. At half time the score was 21-6 in favor of the Bulldogs. As the Tigers came back on the field, there was the traditional determination, and in the remaining quarter La Grande made four touchdowns in less than four minutes, making the final score 33-33. The fine running of Bob Hill, Mike Skala, and Dick Quinn, with passes from Bonsor to Cornwell, made the team out- standing. La Grande traveled to Milton Freewater the next week. With the Pioneer spread formation, the Tigers were off balance long enough for them to gain a 13-6 lead. The Tigers met Pendleton on the La Grande field only to be defeated: 32-12. The Buckaroos' passing attack accounted for the majority of touchdowns although the Ti- gers were fighting every minute of the game. The Dalles Indians, Blue Mountain Champs, invaded the Tiger lair and were se- verely clawed before they secured the Bengal pelt. In the first few minutes of the third quarter, Jenkin's boys tied the score 13-13. Even though the Indians scored again in the fourth quarter, it was anybody's game until the final horn. It was heartbreaking to lose this one 19-13, expecially since the Dalles commented that it was their toughest game. La Grande, on their own field, played the Mac-Hi Pioneers once again. At the half time, the score was 13-7 in favor of the Tigers, who were out for revenge. The third quarter found the Pioneers scoring on ground attacks. The Tigers came right back with a pass from Smith to Quinn, setting up our 19-14 lead. The fourth and final quarter saw the Pioneers capture two more TD's while La Grande scored one, ending the game at 28-26. The last game of the year found the Baker Bulldogs and the La Grande Tigers hard at work during practice hours. Both remembered the upset of a year ago. The game was quite a mix-up with a balking clock and errors in downs. With a pass from Smith to Hill setting up our first TD drive, the half-time score was 7 all. As Baker intercepted a pass and used a hard ground attack, they picked up 2 more TD's, La Grande scored on a Smith to-Cornwell pass, lateraled to Skala, for our only other score of the game. The final score, Baker 20, La Grande 14. Looking back to a team with 8 losses and one tie, we remember a fighting bunch of boys who fought every minute of every game. Although La Grande is not accustomed to losses, we can congratulate our team. Team Co-Captains for the year were Bob Hill and Terry Kelley. Beating Caldwell and Hermiston gave the M hoopsters a needed shot of vigor, then came Baker. One night we tipped them over by nineteen points, the next night we lost by fourteen points. Overpowering the next two opponents, we came face to face with The Dalles (rated as the number one team of the state). We lost this game, but were still able to run over Hermiston the following night. Splitting the series with Boise, we undertook the task of defeating Baker. At La Grande, the Tigers chewed up the Bulldogs, playing one of our best games: Buckwalter putting in a fast performance, scoring nine points; Cornwell sinking beautiful shots in and around the keyhole, for sixteen points; and Winburn rolling up a total of eleven points with his perfected hook shot. At Baker, the Tigers found the game ending with the Bulldogs three points ahead. The split series called for a play-off game at Union for the chance to travel to the State Tournament. With superior sportsmanship, the Tigers walked from the Union gym defeated by three points, ending our Basketball season. We have chalked up 1,085 points to our opponents 938 points. The Tigers had a .505 shooting average at the loul line for this year. The leading “hoop man was Ray Buckwalter, scoring 278 points; followed by Everett Winburn, with 176 points; and Dale Cornwell scoring 146 points.
