Counsell I watched a lily unfolding, By crystal waters fair, The delicate sepals withholding The secret hidden there. I heard the songbirds calling; The drowsy hum of the bee; The summer rains soft falling; And still I waited to see. At last in the first flush of morning, I beheld a sweet vision of white, Which had blossomed as sun’s rays were warming The chill of the previous night. I gaze on the faces of classmates, Alas! we are soon to disband, Our joys and our sorrows—our sealed fates, Are held in the palm of His hand. Though the wind may be cold and chilly, Which over our pathway blows, May our lives be as pure as the lily, As fair and sweet as the rose.
