jr. . l m : a $tei n £36 if! Ca Jontaine School, Zke 1962 Cacohi La Fontaine High School La Fontaine, Indiana SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION Mrs. Harold Atkinson, Secretary METRO. SCHOOL DISTRICT OF WABASH CO. Board of Education Left to right: Ira L. Huntington, Superintendent; Joh n mber- Chamberlain, Herman Whitesel, Elbert Carr, Earl Dy- Dyson, son, Glenn Cox, Charles Tiede, Attorney. Mrs. Helen Graham, Bookkeeper Zke Principal ' s Message This has indeed been a unique year for La Fontaine High School. It was to have been the final year for our high school since all Liberty Township students are to attend Southwood Junior-Senior High School next year. Then came the fire which destroyed our building with all its pictures, books, and mementoes. In American history, this will probably be known as the John Glenn year, but for all of us of LaFontaine, 1961-62 will be remembered as the year of the FIRE. We are so thankful for the wonderful cooperation of C. O. Duker, principal of Noble High School. He and his faculty made it possible for us to complete the school year with- out interruption. We also appreciate the sacrifices made by our faculty and our five hun- dred and five students. We trust that all of us who have worked to satisfy educational needs will not have worked in vain. Time will tell whether the ideas and deeds of those who come after us will justify our faith in the future. Ira R. They are as follows: Scholarship Leadership, Sportsmanship, and Citizenship. This page sponsored by the LaFontaine Lion ' s Club. Ca JoHtame High School 72 Years of Service to Wabash County Those of us who have enjoyed the privilege of being associated with LaFontaine will remem- ber it as one of those rare institutions where geography, tradition and personnel combined to create a truly fine school. A stable community meant that a student could continue his education without the constant interruptions of changing schools. An overwhelming majority of good citizens gave solid support to sensible educational policies which kept pace with modern practice while retaining the best of the older values. Finally, a cheerful, well-ordered and enthusiastic student body main- tained a school spirit which demanded outstanding achievement and frequently obtained it. Who will forget . . . The LaFontaine band playing the school song in a standing-room-only gymnasium . . . The Booster Club, in white blouses and shirts, cheering wildly in the closing seconds of a double-overtime basketball game . . . Eighth-graders making leaf collections worth an A in a college class . . . Teachers who taught 55 years at LaFontaine . . . Juniors who did without their annual Christmas gift exchange, giving presents instead to others less fortunate than themselves . . . The atmosphere as the school sings Silent Night, just before Christmas vacation . . . Who shall say where the influence of a good school ends? LaFontaine graduates have gone on to a variety of careers which defies cataloguing and extends into thirty-odd states and several foreign countries. Represented are such diverse groups as farmers, housewives, aeronautical engineers, doc- tors, pilots, truck drivers, educators, well-drillers, morticians, foreign service officers and purchas- ing agents, to name only a handful. LaFontaine people have served their country faithfully in its wars; some have given their lives in such places as Bataan, others even now guard our frontiers, including those in the Strategic Air Command. The historical committee is grateful to the scores of individuals who made available photographs, records and information for this section, and we regret the inevitable omissions and errors. Scott and Elihu Garri- son being its proprietors. It was located on the Marion and Lagro road. Both of the proprietors were pioneers of the White Water Valley, and were political rivals in county politics. Being on the direct route along which much of the grain trade of North -Central Indiana passed for years to the Wabash and Erie Canal, the proprietors and citizens of America had great expectations for the future of their town. And for more than two decades their hopes seemed to be founded on solid ground. In 1850 the old Marion and Lagro road, was laid with planks, which further emphasized America ' s prominence as compared with Daniel Grant ' s upstart Ashland (La Fontaine), a mile to the southwest. From 1850 to i860 America reflected the even greater glory of Lagro, and Ashland was in almost total eclipse. When, in the late ' 60s, it became evident that Ashland was to get a railroad connection through the Cincinnati, Wabash and Michigan, America ' s sun began to set. The line was com- pleted to Ashland in 1873, and in 1881 even the post office was discontinued at America. In the autumn of 1834, William Grant, Daniel Grant and Smith Grant, with their families, settled in the forests of Liberty Township. William Grant settled at the eastern line of the Indi- an Reserve, and is said to have built the first house in Liberty Township on the northern bank of Grant Creek, in September, 1834, near the present town of La Fontaine. Mahlon Pearson set- tled here soon after Mr. Grant. The first marriage performed in the township was that of Henry Hummill to Maria Grant, daughter of William Grant, in August, 1835. The first man to die in Liberty Township was Charles Scott, father of Reverend Jesse D. Scott and the grandfather of Mahlon Pearson. He died at America in 1839, at the age of sev- enty-five. The first native-born white child was Malvina Grant. Township and Religion Liberty Township embraces about forty-eight square miles in the southeastern corner of Wa- bash County, being substantially eight miles from east to west and six miles from north to south. It is on the whole, a level and fertile region, depending for its drainage upon the headwaters of Treaty and Deer creeks, which flow northward into the Wabash and Salamonie, respectively, and upon the Mississinewa River and its branch, Grant Creek, which meander through its central and southwestern sections. Josina Creek has some of its headwaters in the southwestern corner of the township, after which it takes a loop through northern Grant County and joins the Mississinewa River in the southwestern corner of Liberty Township. It was near its mouth that the Indian Village stood which was destroyed by Lieutenant Colonel Campbell in the War of 1812. After 1835 the settlers no longer felt so lonely; in fact, the accessions of population became so frequent that the citizens, who had been relying on the civil and judicial authorities of Lagro Township, asked for a separate organization. At the March term of the board of county commis- sioners for 1836, Liberty Township was laid off from the south end of Lagro with an area of sixty- four square miles, or eight miles square. At the time its northern boundary was a mile north of Lincolnville and a mile south of New Holland. Some years afterward two northern tiers of eight sections each were cut off and returned to Lagro. When the township was set off, an election was ordered at the house of William Grant on the first Monday of April, 1836, for the selection of one justice of the peace. William R. Hall was appointed inspector of elections and William Garrison was chosen justice. The number of votes at this election was nineteen. House -raisings and log-rollings brought the settlers together often; sometimes the talk would turn to high and low tariff; but generally the conversation was upon religious topics, many of them having a Testament in their pocket for reference as an end to a controversy. The first religious meeting held in Liberty Township was at the cabin of William Grant by Elder Daniel Jackson, the widely known preacher of the Disciples of Christ, who was living west of Wabash. These services were held in 1835. On August 4, 1836, eight members of that de- nomination organized the noted Boundary Church. The organization took place at the house of William Grant by Elder Jackson and Elder Jefferson Matlock, in what is now La Fontaine. The meetings were at first held in Mr. Grant ' s house and afterward in the schoolhouse that stood on the site of the church finally built for the society, a mile and a half north of La Fontaine, at the east side of the old Indian boundary line and nearly at the geographical center of the township. Schools Although a room in William Grant ' s double log house is said to have been used as a gath- ering place for a few children, who were taught the rudiments of learning some time in 1837, perhaps the first regular house dedicated to education was that mentioned as the meeting place of the Disciples. It was built largely by the supporters of the church, and the first teacher to hold forth was James Dicken, afterward a practicing physician. Nathaniel McKimmey was also a teacher, as well as Miss Nancy McKimmey and David I. Jackson. Mrs. Jonathan Scott, whose mother was a daughter of Mahlon Pearson, claimed that the first school was taught in a cabin built by Ferree, north of America on the old state road, in 1836-37, by George W. Smith, and that she was one of the pupils. She added that the first schoolhouse was built at America in 1837, and that she attended it in the summer of that year. Mr. Smith was its teacher also, and the Grant children were among his pupils. The first regular schoolhouse is thought to have been a small pole -cabin with eight or ten feet out at one end for a chimney, with a huge back wall and dirt jambs, situated a mile and a half north of La Fontaine, which was built in 1839 or 1840. When the legal school system went into operation, the settlers tried to avail themselves of it s advantages and to act under its provisions so far as within their power. But the facts that the people were so poor and the settlements so square, that the roads were so wretched that the school fund was so small, that good houses could not be had and good teachers (except now and then there was one) were not in the county, made upward progress in education very slow. The Hackleman schoolhouse was built after a regular school system had been set in opera- tion. One of the most important old-time schools was that of Mr. Stone ' s. The house was built in 1837, Moses Wellman taught two schools there, and George McNeal taught the third school. In 1865, 1866 and 1867, Lorenzo Tucker taught three schools in succession, and his school was so excellent that the young people came from the adjourning districts. During one winter he had from seventy to eighty pupils. The school building erected in 1876 at a cost of $6,000 stood in a splendid grove, north- west of the main part of the town. It was made of brick and two stories high having three rooms. In 1908 the Liberty Township school was erected at a cost of $22,000. In proportion to its population and wealth, no township had better educational facilities than Liberty Township.
