g--3-, ,wp ,....-1 lt is an established educational principle that we learn, for the most part, by experi- ence-feither our own experience, which would be direct, or the experiences oi others. Direct experience is the best teacher because it makes the deepest and most lasting impression, but there are many, many things that it would be impractical or impossi- ble to experience directly. These things we learn about by reading and by studying experiences of others. - One of the important skills that effective citizens in a republic must acquire is the ability to work together under their own direction lor the common good. Here again the best way to acquire this skill is through direct experience, and in this area in the school direct experience is possible. Throughout all phases oi their school activity students are encouraged to consider their own orbit, and to help to plan their own activities, goals, and controls. This kind oi philosophy emphasizes individual responsibility and achievement rather than blind obedience and fear-caused responsefone the climate in which ireedom the mark of the dictatorship and the totalitarian state.
