The Future Farmers of America, or F. F. A., is the national organi- zation of, by, and for boys studying vocational agriculture. The purposes of this organization are: to promote a grow- ing appreciation of the joys and satisfactions of homemakingg to emphasize the importance of worthy home membershipg to encourage democracy in home and conh munity lifeg to work for good home and family life for ally to promote inter- national good willg to foster the development of creative leadership in home lifeg to provide wholesome individual and group recreation, and to further in- terest in home economics. Some of the activities for the year included attending district and state conventions at Topeka, a picnic for the F.F.A., selling pop and hot dogs at the football games, a Christmas party for the members and club mothers, and a tea for the girls' mothers in the spring. All classes are under the supervision of Mrs. Handley. X 0 Xi. me ix fy wwx 742 Q l C0 M General Science, a freshman course, offers an introduction into the world of physical sciences. Air, water, light, heat, mechanics, electricity, plant and animal life are studied. The class has an enrollment of thirty-four students. Under theinstruction of Mr. Handley the students perform experiments, read widely and keep scrapbooks on various phases of the work. sgwloqw Biology, a laboratory sci- ence, is under the supervision of Mrs. Handley. Members of the class perform experiments and study plant and animal life. In the spring and fall, the students go on field trips to observe wild life and col- lect specimens. -Pa L Q fa' -2-.5 'SQ A 3 The Algebra Classis at work solving an equation. There are 33 freshmen taking this course under the instruction of Miss Mitchell. Miss Mitchell instructs the English III group, and English I and II are taught by Mrs Riley. leibers' of the English II class are shown while working on a speech unit. Bill Gomer- dinger is the student speaking to the class. The study hall is in use each period during the day. At the front of the room is the library which contains about 2,000 volumes. Educa- tional magazines are also available for use by the stu- dents. The librarians in charge of checking books in and out are Naomi Hammett, Barbara Hays, Esther Phalen, larcia Zi mer- man, Margie Johnson, Berneice Long, Ethel Rockwell, and Allen Crisler. 'QI L' 4? ,f Small R The commercial department under the supervision of Miss Lorena Riley offers five courses in commerce. Commercial Arithmetic, offered to the sophomores, has 18 students who study the mathematical problems of commerce. Typewriting I and Bookkeep- ing are offered Uoboth juniors and seniors. Students may take these courses either for per- sonal use or the development of vocational skill. As preparation to enter a beginning office position re- quiring stenography, Secre- tarial Training and Shorthand are offered kJSenior students. Twelve girls are enrolled in these courses mastering short- hand theory and transcription, developing increased type- writing skill, and studying various office problems and procedures. t Pictured below is the Wbrld Geography Class with their 1nStfUCt?T, MT- Kasper. The rec- ord of the sixteen-year-old drivers than that of drivers forty-five to fifty 100 childrens high school is nine times worse years old. Of ff age today5l2 willke killed or permanently injured in automobile accidents, and 63 will be injured or involved in such an acci- dent before they reach the age of 65. Only 25, one- fourth, will go through life without such a mis- hap. LaCygne RuralHigh School has startedthe driver edu- helv cation course to reduce this numbercf acci- dents and fatalities. This this is the first year course has been given in Linn County. During thebvo semesters forty-one students have been enrolled in Driver Training. Classroom instruction, discussion, and road in- struction while at the wheel of a dual-controlled auto- mobile constitute the main activity of the class.
