X ADMIIZED F-OB I-HQ UNDE ING-AND GUIDANCE Mr. Michael Saunders is a man who will be remembered by his students for his understanding and his ability to teach government in an interesting way. However, it is not only his classroom qualities that make Mr. Saunders special, but his concern and interest for all the students of la Cumbre. Whether it be staying late to prepare for the Inter-School meeting or issuing tickets for the Spring Show, he was al- ways ready to help. Mr. Saunders is greatly admired because he always en- courages us to get things done ourselves, and teaches us to accept greater responsibilities. He is a person who will really listen to us and respect our ideas and goals. Because of this, we have had the feeling that he is really on our side. Mr. Saunders is a man who has gained respect from his - fellow colleagues on the faculty, and now he deserves our recognition. It is with our deepest sincerity that we dedi- cate this 1968 La Cumbrean to Mr. Michael Saunders, a man who will always remain in our memories. lt CTX .jr QF fit 5 lffl X K XUHH' , i Qgag, .. COUNSELORS: At one time or another almost everyone has gone to see the counselors. It might be about next year's course choices, a SCAT test percentage, a transfer, or a quesdon about college. They are there to answer such questions and to help if you have problems with school work or at home. They use your grades, your SCAT and STEP test percentages and teacher comments to place you in the class where you will do your best. They also help you decide whether you want to take a certain course or not. Several good books were read this year by stu- , 4- dents in each of the three grades. 'I'hose books read included H X J TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE POND, CAINE MUTINY ' TRIAL, and WHEN LEGENDS DIE. - Many movies were shown to correlate the reading with visual experience. Some of these were: TOM SAWYER, JOHNNY TREMAIN, THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, and A TALE OF TWO CITIES. Finally, the new Quadruplex was ued by English teachers V I and Government teachers to integrate the two subject areas. The Reading Department teachers endeavored to introduce a new program to Reading classes this year as students went on field trips in the Santa Barbara area These students went to the police station, the News- Press, the airport, a hospital, Cable T. V. and many g other interesting places. Also, many speakers came to the classes to speak and to answer many student ques- tions. All of this came about through Project Opportu- nity which, among other things, familiarizes the stu- dent with vocational opportunities in the community. Both the teachers and the students enjoyed these worthwhile activities. ng . ills- . 42' I 4. . , 'E u-Yr' I Q . l 3 I , 5, - ' 9, ' ,JW K. he Qvrx-. lf- Mrs. Nancy Lorden, Reading Dept. English was difficult enough, but now we had to learn the pronunciation and grammar of a whole new language. Spanish, French, and Latin are the languages offered to L.C. students. Ninth graders studied their chosen language more ex- tensively dealing with more difficult grammar and more conversational practice. ln the fall, the Spanish Club was formed for students interested in more practice with the language. Also, for the second time, the Rhudean Reeves Memorial Award was given to a deserving ninth grade Spanish student. Correct proununciation is an integral part of language learning. Seventh graders found mang new math terms and concepts in their first year at La Cumbre. Soon, though, they got into the swing of it and were doing well. The eighth grade delved further into the mystery of numbers, using those formerly baffling properties such as the commutative, associative, and distributive principles. The ninth grade studied either General Math, which went over unclear points and introduced new ones, or Algebra, which, although confusing at times, went pretty well. fav ' .i ' A r , 1 . Besides the usual class work with the textbook, students did many interesting things. Several guest speakers from various fields came in to enlighten students about their areas of scientific study. Field trips were made to the Memorial Cancer Foundation, the Museum Planetarium, tidepools, and several other places. By such field trips, students were able to experience seeing some of the things discussed in their classes. Many students worked with telescopes and microscopes trying to see into the mystery of the minute and the vast. Some students took part in the dissection of preserved animals and plants. Many students took part in the Intra-School Sci- ence Fair. Below, several of Mr. Cudney's eighth graders think they know the right answer. Xfgmw ln Art we learned to develop our talents more fully by work- ing with others, tackling the varied assignments that were intro- duced to us by our teachers. Projects included working with water color, papier-mache, oil pastels, clay, poster paints, and charcoal. For those of us who wished to further our artistic abil ities, the Art Club was open to eighth and ninth graders. Among the many activities we participated in were the Fes- tival of the Arts and the annual exhibit at the Faulkner Gallery. Our musical experience began with the required music cours in the seventh grade. We also had the opportunity to participat in the Seventh Grade Chorus. Those of us who wished to continu in this field could join the eighth and ninth grade A Cappella, the Minority, or the Christmas or Spring Shows. Also, those who had an interest in musical instruments could be in the Band or Orchestra. These groups played for many school functions and appeared in many parades during the year. Seventh grade girls had a unit on baby sitting and grooming. In clothing they made shifts, scarves, and tote bags. Eighth graders had a unit on foreign foods and a more detailed unit on child development. Their clothing projects included skirts, blouses and shifts. Ninth graders elected one of two courses. In our sewing classes attention was focused on creativity and individuality. Baking and preparing simple dinners was emphasized in the Ninth grade general courses. A Christmas fashion show and a Spring show highlighted the year's activities. Industrial arts classes gave us insight into our mechanical world. We worked with our brawn as well as our brains through exploration in wood working and rafting to electricity and metal shop. This was a favorite class of many of us ecause we were able to do constructive work and see the physical results of our -work immediately. -4- D v., - I Mrs. Carmela Raack, Home Economics Dept. To the right is one of their varied activities. Mrs. Biddulph races around the girls' field with some of her PE pro- teges. 1:1 InPE boys started the year playing touch football, and after a quarter of this, they switched to basketball. During the spring semester volleyball, followed by softball were enjoyed by the students. Once a week cross country was held during class time, H - and some boys ran it before school. Participation in after school sports to compete with other schools was encouraged. The sports boys could go out for were football, basketball, track, and baseball. The spirit of the c test was so great that many boys went out for each sport. This offers students and faculty a wide range of subjects and materials. Each year instructional classes are offered to English and history classes so that each student will be able to make better use of the library. Student participation in selecting books is invited when the annual Books on Exhibit is presented. The thirty books which receive the most votes are purchased for the book col- lection. The library is open from 8:00 to 8:50 A.M., 12:35 to 1:00 P. M. , and from 3:35 to 4:30 P. M. This gives students time to browse and to study. We were now more a part of the school. Though many of the same activities were offered, this year they had a new meaning for us. It gave us a feeling of superiority to be considered first. A new experience for us was electing our own class officers, who this year were Andy Cuellar, President, Linda Vallejo, vice-presidentg and Jane Reese, secretary- treasurer. The duties of the officers were to organize graduation week as well as money-making projects for the last week events. Our last year at La Cumbre was truly a rewarding one. Our varied subjects made us aware of new fields to explore. Band, typing, and journalism were some of the electives that were offered to us. We were included in more activities with our upperclassmen such as 8th and 9th grade dances, A Cappella, and various other clubs. We were no longer regarded as just 7th graders and this gave us the feeling of being more a part of La Cumbre. Our added responsibilities helped us grow up and become more mature as we mixed our school work with a year of activities. This unique year as the class of 1969 has passed but we will always cherish the memories of the year 's events. H 'Sly us- ,v . Toward the beginning of the year the Girls League, together with the Boys' League, sponsored a car wash. Shortly afterwards, a good-grooming assembly was 1 which featured Mr. Ohasi, a local hairdresser. In November, they organized a very successful rummage sale from which they cleared a net profit of over one hundred dollars. The Council of Christmas Cheer and the Mother-Daugl Christmas Tea kept the officers and representatives busy during December. The Carnival, in which several different clubs participated, was probably the biggest event of the year. Two fashion shows were held in the spring, and in Ju they arranged the annual Festival of the Arts. Pictured on opposite page are Mr. Ohashi and Wendy Drammer during the good-grooming assembly. Irene Holt is shown assisting in the Girls' League Rummage Sale in November. As in previous years, the Sugar and Spice Committees job was to choose girls from each of the grades every month. The girls chosen are considered model examples of the ideal girl.
