As years have passed, we have added some new members and lost a tew ot the original students. We now are the largest class in high school, with an enrollment ot t- i-,f enty members. Our class has entered into nearly every sport in high school and all those who participated in them have contributed greatly toward the school's success in athletics. This year we gave the Prom which was one ot the most outstanding social events ot the year. Another important event ot the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet. Next year we will be Seniors, and we hope to see all the present Juniors in September. lGood-bye now.l Back row llett to rightl: Diane McCormick, Kenneth Nolrleby, Patti Schaar, Jim Grobschmit, Karen Jensen, Fritz Kleisath. Our new member, Verna Robinson, came to us trom Cleveland High School in Seattle. Our biggest event ot the year was the Freshman initiation, which began with our dressing them up in nightgowns and having them carry a teddy bear or doll. ln the evening the initiation continued atter which the Sophomores gave a dance tor all. Our class showed an unusual amount ot interest in ath- letics this year. Most ot the boys turned out tor football, basketball and base! ball. All the girls are taking physical education which is a variety ot ditterent sports. We sincerely thank Mrs. Kirby, our advisor, tor guiding us along the way. A tew weelrs later we gave the Sophomores a return party at the Civic Club. Even though we did have quite a time with the record player, we still had tun. Ot these our most colortul was the Girls' Club Initiation. It was held at the home ot Mrs. By Norman, our very worthy advisor's lovely home at Sneeoosh. The Mothers' Tea which was held in May was another outstanding event. As each year the mothers all enjoyed themselves as much as the girls enjoyed giving it tor them. This year the Football Basketball Banquet was given high praise. The girls worked hard to give the boys an excellent dinner. The theme was centered around the Tournament Championship Trophy. The play entitled The Big Blow-up was presented Eriday evening, December I3. The plot ot the play was as tollows: The leading characters were tour suitcases, whfch looked so much alike that when their owners got them mixed-the result was not only uproariously tunny, but was highly exciting because in one ot the suitcases was a time bomb that would blow anyone who tricd to open it to smitherenes, and in another was a valuable pearl necklace. Terry King, a young detective on the track ot Mugsy Morris, a crook, had trailed him to the hotel ot Ellen Parker where he planned to sec MUQSYTS halt-sister. Unknown to Terry, Mugsy is already at the hotel masquerading as a deat old lady. Terry didnt know what the sister looked like so he is suspicious ot every lodger in the hotel. Atter many spine tingling thrills and as many hilarious sit- uations, contributed to by Beans Parker and his young O. A. 0. Katie Lee, Terry met the sister who is Cora Johnson, the local school teacher and succeeded in capturing Mugsy. Cora, becoming trightened, wildly threw the suitcase with the bomb outside and caused Tl-lE BIG BLOW UP while the curtain comes down with a bang. Under the wise direction ot Mr. Rennord, the Junior Class Advisor, the Prom was a great success. Ivy covered the ceiling. The decorations were worked out around the theme ot Serenade in Biuei. The melody was inscribed in silver notes in panels along the walls. ln the center ot the tloor was a wishing well, banlred with moss, ivy and tulips around the base. A tlower garden ettect with assorted tulips was erected below the spotlights, The powder roorn was decorated with pastel walis and rugs, with blue and white ruttled stools. This year the dinner was kept in strict ac' cordance with the date and followed the May Day theme. The main hall was decorated in blue and white and the centerpiece of the head table was com- posed of a doll, representing the l..l'l.S. graduate of I947. Guests were guided to their proper places by means of place cards which were facsimilies of the original May Baslret. Keith Johnston served as toastmaster for the affair with fitting responsive speeches given by the Senior and Junior class presidents, Pat Nelson and Fritz Kleisath. and also by members of the faculty. The Senior class will and testament was read by Mary l-lerrold. Other entertainment for the evening was furnished by piano selections by the Misses Gerry Dunlap and Marian Nystrom. This banquet is an annual affair given in honor of the departing Seniors and is one that should never be forgotten as it is the last real chance for the Senior Class to have a social affair with other members of the high school. The first loss was suffered at Oak Harbor where our end, LANDY JAMES, broke his finger. The next week fate again played against us, for while practicing for a game, FRITZ KLEISATH fractured his left shoulder. Two weeks later, while riding in a car, BOYD ZIMMERMAN fractured several vertebras, and this, with two other boys be- coming ineligible, gave our coach sufficient reason to cancel our two remaining games. The first game of the season was played September I3, with Oak Harbor at the Mount Vernon Jamboree. Oak Harbor made a touchdown in the first part of the game and as only ten minutes was allotted, it made it very difficult for La Conner to score, although they were well on their way when time was up. The final score was,-La Conner O, Oak Harbor 7. The following Monday, September I6, the Brafes pounced on Mount Vernon and succeeded in scalping them to the tune of 34 to O. Friday, September 20, La Conner met Coupeville on the home field, and again with a display of ercellent ball handling, the Braves brought forth a winning score of 20 to I6. September 27, the Braves travelled to Bellingham where the scrapping but inexperienced What- com Junior High team put up a battle, but went down under the fury of the fighting Braves, 4I to O. We would win a tew, then lose a couple until tne ,ast cf ine season when we won :ive moe betore losing to Concrete in the ast scheduled game. Here are some ot the highlights ot the seasons record. Vfe won I4 and lost 7. We won ever-T oractice game, al ot which were scheduled with B teams . The most thrilling encounter was witn Buriirrgton on their foor. We held the lead ail the way unt,l tne tinal seconds ot tfie tourth quarter. With a few seconds lett Qveneli scored a tree throw to but the game into an overtime. Each tearn scored 28-28. In the second overtime, the team ihat malres two points tirst, wins. Landy dribbied and made a cripple to cinch the game 30 to 28. Concrete beat us on our own tloor by two points. Nolcleby, swished one in with a second to go, but the reteree ruled it out saying he was on the line. There were other views, but the retereels word is law. Atter discussing the question tor a while, a La Conner businessman said that it was improbable that this year's team would be a success. Evidently this man was not aaouainted with the determination and tighting spirit that the La Conner Braves have always shown in the pail that have made them teared by other teams no matter what their calibre. So determined to till their shelt with scalps. the Braves began their march so that, before the end ot the season they were near the top ot the lgdder. As a surprise to most ot the schools and to many ot the people ot La Conner, the Braves suc:eeded in copping the Trophy at the District Tour- nament tor tirst place, beating Sultan. Monroe ani Stanwood, although being the smallest school to play in the tournament. Then again at the State Tournament in Seattle, La Conner won their tirst game against Bainbridge Island High, a school ot 250 enrollment, with a score ot 39-35: were taken by St. Johns, 38-24: won against Goldendale 40-38: and lost to Concrete by the small margin ot 50-49: but even so reeeved a trophy tor 7th place in the entire state. This record is written proot that it is not the sie ot the school that counts but the determina- tion ot the players that writes the tinal chapter: and, with tour ot the tirst team returning next year. the season should be as successful as it was this year: LONG LIVE THE BRAVESI We all give credit to the hard-working, never-ceasing tighting spirit ot our Chiet -Jack Whittaker, and we know that he well deserves the acclaim: HE DID THE MOST WITH THE LEAST .
