THE CZ}. MAD ZONE nZI VOCAL □ DEAD Narrators Voice: CH Qi£ There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It ' s a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man ' s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area we call The Zone! Narrator ' s Voice: You ' re looking at the frozen image of John Kelsey, Age fourty-five. Occupation- conductor, composer, in charge of a high school music program, a general practitioner of music. This is not just a regular music class for John Kelsey, He perhaps doesn ' t know it at the time.,, but it ' s an exodus. Somewhere up the road he ' s looking for sanity, , , ,And somewhere up the road-he ' 11 take an excursion into the shadows, (g pause) and he ' ll smile then too. And perhaps across his mind there ' ll flit some wisp of a memory not too important really. MADRIGAL SLEEPOVER A Comedy in One Act. (a darkened living room, with lantern light. Girls huddled around Kathy on the floor with pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, etc. Assorted old pizza boxes, coke bottles strewn around them.) , . KATHY: ..man gets naked in bed eep together , no wait.« (LIGHTS ON) MOTHER: five A.M.! ! stop noise? this hour? save it for (DOOR SLA IS, LIGHTS OUT) MICHELE: (TO KATHY, AS IF NOTHING AS HAPPENED) And then the man... KATHY: Anyway... (BRINGS GIRLS CLOSER, WHISPERS SOME- THING INAUDIBLE. WE FINALLY HEAR: )... then the man (WHISPERS) .. .and then you scream and then he screams and then it ' s over. (MOMENT OF SILENCE. THE GIRLS SIT THERE, SHOCKED AND HORRIFIED) JOLYN: (MAKING THROWING-UP SOUNDS, PULLING BLANKET UP OVER HER HEAD) That ' s disgusting!! LISA: You lie, Kathy. Nothing that sickening can be true, KATHY: Boogers are true, (all CONSIDER FOR A MOMENT) MICHELE: (THOUGHTFULLY) So that ' s why people are born naked? KATHY: The worst thing is — your parents do it, you know, LISA: NO! Come on! No way! Uh-Uh! Nooooo! JOLYN: (HORRORIZED) My parents did it at least twice, I have a sister. vo , . , . My lather ' s polite. ICE: He ' s obviously not as Pofi e as you think. MICHELLE: father ' s polite, and we have six kids. (ENOUGH)
