A 4 LaSalle High School Niagara Falls, New York This is the record of the students- Friends - Faculty - Our social and academic accomplishments Recorded in the l958 GIAR Ai ll lj dfllvuf ffiffffff ri I FOREWCRD Once again, we come to the end of another school year. As Seniors, this marks the last of our years in high school, and we pause to contemplate about what will happen in the future. We approach a new doorway - one that opens upon the world. Until now, our world has been small, but in a few years, it can be as small, or as large as we are capable of making it. We will go our different ways and enter all walks of life. We are not able to pierce the shadowy future, and so we do not know the part that we will play in it - our problems, our contributions and our aspirations. The following pages are a record - a record which, in the ensuing years, will bring into sharp focus the shadows and silhouettes of yesterday's memories. Read it, and remember your Alma Mater. TABLE of CONTENTS FAcuLTY 7 PAGE SENIORS I7 LINDERCLASSMEN 57 ACTIVITIES 79 SPCDRTS IO5 MUSIC l23 With the publishing of this yearbook, the students of LaSalle wish to extend to Dr. Small, the retiri-ng Superintendent of Schools, aur heartiest and warmest wishes of good luck in his future endeavors. Dr. Small has been our Superintendent of Schools for thirteen years, from l945 to l958. Being educated at Pennsylvania State, Chicago University, Cornell and the University of Buffalo, Dr. Small has served as a vocational instructor prior to his appointment to the administrative branch of the school system. ln addition to his school career, Dr. Small has been a past president of New York State Vocational Education Association, New York State Teachers Association, New York State Council of City and Village Superintendents and Niagara Falls Rotary Club as well as a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Regents Advisory Commission in Industrial Education and the Regents Advisory Commission in Health and Physical Education. Under the leadership of Dr. Small the Niagara Falls School System has striven to instill in its pupils the true ideals of higher education. Dr. Small has installed new programs, brought forth new ideas in education and has provided a growing school system for a growing Niagara Falls. Our own school is a symbol of Dr. Small's contribution to our city and community. To Dr. Small, we the students, faculty and parents of LaSalle, say thank you for a good job and best of luck to you. 'I :U lt is with great esteem that we, the Senior Class of l958, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. C. Edgar Barlow and Mr. Kenneth Rowe. Mr. C. Edgar Barlow, an English teacher at LaSalle High School for many years, has aided us in the development of our minds, while Mr. Kenneth Rowe, long connected with the Niagara Falls Physical Education Department, has assisted us in the development of our bodies. Because we feel that both of these phases are equally important, we believe that these fine men should be recognized for their outstanding achievements. During his teaching career after graduating from Niagara University, Mr. C. Edgar Barlow, a very versatile leader, has guided our debating teams, usher staffs, and stage crews. Perhaps his best known work in extracurricular activities has been that of directing numerous variety shows and school plays that have been overwhelming successes. Arsenic and Old Lace, The Merry Widow, and Annie Get Your Gun are but a few of the challenging stage productions that Mr. Barlow has helped to bring to the students of LaSalle. Mr. Barlow's outside activities are known by all, but his fine work as a teacher of English is known best by those students who have been in his classes, and who have been swayed by him towards a better under- standing and appreciation of the English language, dramatics, literature and effective speech. Mr. Barlow's dynamic drive during his twenty-eight years of teaching, in attempting to create in his students a will to think, and to work hard and to take interest in cultural subjects has left them better prepared to cope with the problems facing them in future life. A , A colorful sports career and extensive education precedes Mr. Kenneth Rowe's entrance into physical education in Niagara Falls. Mr. Rowe participated in basketball, football and track in high school, and later in football and basketball at LaCrosse College before transferring to Notre Dame where he took part in intramural sports. Mr. Rowe received his Masters Degree after attending during summers such schools as the Univer- sity of Buffalo, Niagara University, Buffalo State Teachers College, and the University of Illinois. Mr. Rowe has been connected with the Physical Education Department for twenty years, and the great majority of LaSalle High School Seniors remember Mr. Rowe when he taught Elementary School Physical Education in the LaSalle area, having learned from him the basic fundamentals of their present knowledge of sports. Later as they grew up, they met Mr. Rowe again at LaSalle Junior High School where he taught physical education and coached the Freshman Football team to the city championship. In l954 Mr. Rowe was promoted to assistant to Mr. Harold Herkimer, head of Public School Physical Education in Niagara Falls, and he may now be seen at almost all sports events keeping a careful eye out to see that the contests are running smoothly. Mr. Rowe is constantly striving to achieve the goal of maximum sportsmanship and healthy recreation in the City of Niagara Falls, and he knows that sports play an important part in everyone's life, realizing that they build the character and ideals of all those who participate. Mr. Rowe's influence on us is indeed a large one and one that will never cease to play an important role to each of us. El William J. Small OARD of EDUCATIO James H. I The Sportsmanship Council, o branch of the Ni- agara Frontier Council, endeavors to instill in all stu- dents, good sportsmanship. Since the other clubs in school also promote good sportsmanship through various activities, the Sportsmanship Council does not have many projects. lt sends four representatives, two seniors and two juniors, to the Fall and Spring meet- ings of the Niagara Frontier Council. LaSalle is the host school for the 1958 Spring meeting. The sign Good- Sportsmanship Promotes Good Citizenship, was put up in the gym for the basketball season. The council consists of two sophomores, four juniors, and six seniors. The Activities Council has reorganized for its second successful year at LaSalle. Every organization and activity is sending one person to represent their group. A poster committee was established to keep our school looking neat and uncluttered. They have the responsibility of putting the posters up in the halls, in neat and organized arrangements, so everyone will be able to enjoy them. The council also sets up rules as to the number of posters, and the size of them. Activities no longer conflict, because-the Activities Council is now keeping an accurate calendar of weekly and forthcoming events. This has proved to be a great help to all organizations in making their activities successful. 80 SPORTSMANSHIP C0 Ai First Row: N. Reitz, M. Hollinger, J. We Second Row: L. Pifer, J. Fisher, C. The president and vice-president of the Council are elected by the entire student body, while Ehe secretary and treasurer are elected to their posts by the members ofthe ouncil. Regular meetings are held once each month and it is the duty of the representative to convey to their roll call groups the business of the meetings. lt is the function of the Senior Council to support all worth-while activi- ties engaged in by the student body. Types of activities supported by the Council are a guide service through the new school, student transportation to out-of-town athletic events, a better dress campaign, United Community Chest campaign, and a host of other projects that present themselves throughout the year. Being a library assistant enables a student to combine LIBRARY STAFF personal advantage with service to the school, since he learns to use a library efficiently. The assistants relieve Miss Huebschmann, librarian, in duties such as shelving books, stamping books, keeping the shelves in order, writing overdue notices, and mending damaged books. This year they have been especially help- ful in the processing of the hundreds of new books that have come to the library. Their cheerfulness and industry is greatly appreciated, and also their willingness to give up their study halls to help the library run more smoothly. First Row: D. Furry, P. McNulty,. C. Jack, J. During the past year the Junior Red Cross has really proven itself to be a service organization. Consisting of one student from each homeroom, the members have been very busy throughout the year. Some of their projects have been: making favors for our local hospitals at Christmas, making stocking gifts for the Veterans Hospital along with other local schools, and making cookies for the Veterans Hospital. Each year a few students are chosen to attend the Junior Red Cross Training Schools, and upon completion of the course, give reports to the members about Red Cross work. The Junior Red Cross really deserves our congratulations for their capable services. O6 Seated: D. Mort, G. Newbury, R. Hallin, D. Van Nimwegen, R. Schoenherr, D. Gerbasi. Stand ing: T. Bronson, W. K Mr. Ronald Hammond, director of the choir and the girls' chorus, and Mr. Merrill Cook, of the band, have helped tremendously to promote the musical interests of the student body at La Salle. The choir usually present a concert at Christmas and Easter assemblies, and they also sang at the dedication ceremonies earlier this year. The band has been playing at foot- ball games this season, and has added to the assemblies by playing while X students are entering and leaving the Y auditorium. AJCRETTE Mr. Merrill Cook Band and Orchestra This fall the majorette squad made their first appearanc at the La Salle football games, after being inactive for th past three years. Despite very little recognition from th school, they have practiced many hours, arranging routine to help in promoting the school spirit at La Salle. This yec they are hoping to receive school letters for their hard effort: The majorettes are always willing to march, no matte what the weather might be. ln addition to marching at fool ball games, they have also marched in several parade throughout the year. Besides being an asset to the band, seems good to have a band with a majorette squad leadir them, to represent La Salle High School. The school year of l957- l958 has been a busy one for the La Salle Senior High School Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Ronald Hammond. Our first major performance was at the Dedication Cere- mony of our beautiful, new high school. About a week later we per- formed again in the annual Christmas Program. After a much deserved vacation we returned invigorated and began preparation for our Spring Concert. We participated with other schools of the city in the City wide Festival and before Easter Vacation in the annual Easter Program, at our own school. ln addition to this we made a number of guest ap- pearances including radio and television. Even though all these activi- ties required practice of the Chorus, and patience of Mr. Hammond, everyone in the chorus will agree it has been a most enjoyable year. A CHORUS A E it CHOIR The thirty-seven voice choir of La Salle Senior High School, under the capable direction of Mr. Ronald Hammond, plays an important part in various assemblies throughout the school year. Their activities include caroling in the halls of La Salle at Christmas time, in addition to the Christmas and Easter assemblies. The city-wide Spring Music Festival is annually included in their agenda, as the choir is often asked to sing at various functions throughout the city. N The LaSalle High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Cook, proven itself a valuable and talented organization. ln uniforms of gold brown, the members have faithfully played at all of our football games many of the school assemblies. It has indeed been a busy year for group of industrious musicians. :X Z' -5 C - has and and this The orchestra, headed by Mr. Cook is an active organization at LaSalle, and although small in quanity, is continually striving for quality. Its pur- pose, along with entertainment, is to develop skill, and familiarity with various musical works. The orchestra participated in the school's Christmas assembly and other programs throughout the school year.
