You may forget many of the facts you have learned in classes, but two things will remain with you,friendsh1ps and memories. Friendships are like the growing shrub, the more it is nourished and cultivated, the stronger it becomes. Memories are the mir- rors in your minds that will reflect back in days ahead the events and activities that have made the greatest impressions on you. May these two assets, gained during your years in LaSalle High School, help you in the uncertain days ahead. You have our best wishes for success in whatever field you are called. Sincerely, CLARK J. Principal PEET The realm of possibility lays the ground- work for actualities, which in turn charts our path of progress. This is a year of military achievement and personal frustrated hope. The normal trend of many lives has been radically transformed, creating a towering frustration whcih shadows the whole world. A mood is cre- ated from which none of us altogether escapes. Any mood that destroys faith in human possibi- lities strikes at the very core of our own per- sonality. An inherent characteristic of youth is the capacity to look ahead. May you :play your part in bringing into being, that towering possibility of a federated peaceful world. ' ' r ELTON c. SCHWINGER Vice-Principal Page 8 SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY Science B uce J. CLASS HISTORY In September of 1959 we, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Forty-Five, began a momentous journey which was to take us through six years filled with ed- ucation, joyous school events and many happy memories. We now started off toward the goal which was uppermost in the thoughts of our classmates--becoming gradu- ates of LaSalle Junior-Senior High School. After settling into our exciting, new role as seventh graders, we be- gan preparing ourselves in democratic principles which would help guide us in later life. There was indeed great zest and enthusiasm present when we elected Antoinette Pino to lead us as president for our first year. During this year we sponsored a number of parties which were supported eagerly by our classmates. The spring of 1940 found us active in the city wide concert held for the choirs and choruses of the various junior and senior high schools. Another important event took place that spring. Wallace MacGregor was elected to the vice-presi- dency of the Junior Council for the coming school year. ' Through the portals of our beloved school, we entered our second year in the Junior High School. This eventful year was headed by our capable Presi- dent Wray Hilts. He was assisted in his office by Vice-president Shirley Palmi- ter, and Jean Flanagan as Secretary-Treasurer. In October, we held a gala Hallowe'en Party which was thoroughly en- joyed by all who attended. Near the end of our year as eighth graders we held a very important election to determine the new President of the Junior Council . James Paul :vas chosen: to fulfill this office for the coming year. Emerging as loyal freshmen ln the fall of 1941, we organized the class readily. President Robert J. Perry, Vice-president William Ewart, and Secretary- Treasurer Edythe Burnham combined their best efforts to make our last year in the Junior High School a truly successful one. This was a busy year for all Of us as we were preparing ourselves with new subjects for our Senior High School years. At lash the long awaited day for the Junior Prom appeared. We pre- sented our first dance with the Senior High's May Day Dance. It was indeed a notable event, one which would remain outstanding in the memories of those attend- inS.11Thus, ended our final participation with the Junior High School unit of B. 8. eo ' We entered LaSalle the next fall realizing that we were now a signifi- cant factor in the promotion and development of high school activity. We were organized under the faculty guidance of Mr. Joseph Longo. Our officers for the tenth year were James Paul, Presidentg James Foley, Vice-presidentg Jack Danner, Secretaryg and Mary Nantz, Treasurer. The numerous events of May Day helped us display our abundant talent and leadership. Howeverg in the gaily decorated gymnasium that evening, we wit- nessed the presentation of the cup to the Junior Class. Proving our good sports- manship, our spirit remained undaunted and we were determined to win the cup the following year. ' We elected James Paul to the office of Vice-president of the Senior Council. In June we finished our first year in the Senior High School. This had been a gay, studious year for all of us. Page n . CLASS HISTORY A fleeting summer passed us and we were soon back at LaSalle working industriously and supporting the teams which had many of our more athletic, male classmates as members. Again we decided upon James Paul's capability to lead us in the organization of the Junior Class. Also serving us in class offices were Vice-president Jack Danner, Secretary Connie MacMullin and Treasurer William Ewart. Mr. Peter Gugino was also a Sreat asset to the class by serving us as class advisor. ' In February, we presented a very novel St. Valentinefs Day Dance. The gymnasium was highly colorful with cupids and hearts on the walls and red and white paper streamers. Amid this appealing theme were happy couples enjoying themselves to the utmost. Again May Day was upon us. It was with vim, vigor, and vitality that our class set out for the cherished cup. We put our best efforts into all the events which took place that day and saw our score rise steadily. Sure of vic- tory, we eagerly awaited Mr. Peet's deliverance of the cup at the dance to our class representative. However, the Sophomore Class had won a close victory. Last fall we entered LaSalle to register as supreme Seniors. Our jour- ney wae nearing its finish. Miss Genevieve Wustrack became our faculty advisor. We carefully chose our class officers who led us successfully through our senior year. Edward Redmond became our class president and fulfilled his office to the best of his ability. Lucille Britman as Vice-president, Connie MacMullin as Sec- retary, and Thomas C merford as Treasurer were the remaining class officers who worked hard for the class during our last year. In January, there were sixteen graduates of the Senior Class. These students had accelerated their school work in order to graduate before their entrance into the armed forces of our country or enter college and other institutions of higher learning. President Wray Hilts led this part of our Senior Class. Gerald Nixon and Gilda Gray served as Vice- presldent and Secretary respectively. - Our great enthusiasm in selling magazine subscriptions swelled our class funds. We were presented with an ice cream party by the publishing com- pany for energetic co-operation. In April we presented our annual Senior Play under the direction of Mrs. Kathleen Erwin. It was entitled NJohnny on the Spotn and dealt with the return of a supposed, hero sailor. This comedy was a great success. The memories of the night of the Senior Banquet, Senior Prom, Baccalau- reate Service and Graduation Service--these will be our last treasured thoughts of our Senior year. The Class of 1945 is going out into a world of chaos which must be re- built by sound minds and bodies. Our education at LaSalle has without question helped us in this direction. And now it is time for us to bid farewell to the past and future history of LaSalle Junior-Senior High School which we are proud to call--our school. - IRENE CHAMBERLAIN Historian, Class of 1945 Page 34 CLASS PROPHECY ' You, dear classmates, may'scoff at the idea that crystal-gazing care ries any portent of things to come. You may laugh in derlsion at the future events which will take place. So preparing for immediate leave from our dude rgnghmin sunny Texas, we gave last minute instructions to our caretaker, Bud RedmQgQQ Our chauffeur, Howie Reiss, wheeled up, as a host of cowboys and girls namely, Pat McCann, Lor- raine Cleluszak, Peggy Lou Parris, Bob Dygert,Jim Eldredge and Bill Schildhauer, sang a farewell song.' We were driven to the depot where we saw none other than those two comedians, B uck and Ewart, who were touring the states with Jim Paul and his world famous swingsters. Before boarding the Super Slide train designed by Sam Blackmore and,his assistant, Wray Hilts, we were confronted by that ln- quiring reporter, Lorelei Anderson. Proceeding to our private car, we were helped with our luggage by Bob Jamieson, then our coy maid Mary Nantz took charge of it. Entering the club car we were provided with some entertainment, for over by the piano was Mary Lou Ansley accompaning Toni Pino and Tom Scozzafava from the Metropolitan. ' As we continued to sail along at top speed, our attention was dis- tracted by a cloud of chatter from Mac McCalester, Russell Stinebring, and Vin- cent Shaffer, who were discussing the latest fantastic scheme of Fred Freeman's. After a few hours of travel, we arrived at Sun Valley, Idaho, where we were greeted by Tom comerford, the mayor and his secretary,Mary Jean Crowley who gave us a hearty welcome. We were then escorted to the Hotel Brady which was de- signed by Richard hlmse1f,where we registered with Dick Bennett, the desk clerk. The Bellhops, Harold Ecker and Jerry Mahannah showed us to our suite where we freshened up for a jaunt through the town. we saw many familiar names on the While strolling down main street, signs posted in front of the different shops. One in particular caught our eye. also stopped at the Art Gallery to about which the world was raving. It was the WMary Schmidt Beauty Salon.W We see some of Betty Ball's priceless paintings A modern glass b ilding suddenly loomed up in front of us and we de- cided to enter. On the main floor was a large newspaper office with an inscrip- tion on the door, Don Dilmore - Editor. He was surrounded by his many secretar- ies, Lucille Britman, Betty Cotton, and Thelma Cuddahee. Inside the office was Jean Rutherford recording the incoming news flashes. As we listened to these re- ports, several well-know persons were mentioned. A - WMiss Betty Author, prominent socialite, is reported to have been se- cretly married to some New York banker, Captains Aeros Lewis and Jim Foley have started their Cornell team into the season's training, Donald Wagner, the star of the Broadway production, WFool's Holiday,W has announced that his SSleGti0H for Miss 1955 is Mac Connery.N Page 35 CLASS PROPHECY I Dashing back and forth was Laurice Shiya,Society Editor, with the lat- Sst reports on the season's debutantes, Ginny Martinsen, Enid Sage, and Betty onkarsh. Onanearby table lay a copy of the evening's write-up by Bob Sullivan, successor to Walter Winchell, whose NDaily Chattern column revealed the lives of such persons as Dorothy Oglesby, Betty Dlnger, and Roberta Behrens. We went out of this room and up a few floors on the elevator. Some of the offices which we noticed were those of Lavonne Gordon - Business Teacher, Carol Eagan - Trained Nurse, Jess McGonigle - Doctor, and Doris Hilts - School of Dancing. ' After leaving the building,we were strolling down the street when sud- denly a terrific explosion rent the air. As the smoke cleared away, the labora- tory of James Templeton, the world famous chemist was seen. His colleague, Roger Wernlund had misunderstood his instructions and mixed the wrong powders. Adingylittle shop with balls hanging out in front of it,next attract- ed our attention. There, behind the counter, was Charles Wensley, selling some- thing that no one wanted ,to somebody who wanted nothing. As we lingered there, fascinated by the array of old cow-bells, glass eyes, and 'junk jewelry,W in walked Joan Miller trying to pawn her violin, in hopes of raising enough money for a square meal. Inside the Irene Specialty Shop, which featured styles by Chamberlain, m0delS, Helen Piercey, Lucille Battles and Betty LaRock, were showing the latest thing in bathing suits and evening dresses. Floorwalkers, Bob Perry and Joe Walsh, were attentively watching the models -- perhaps they were afraid that a shoplifter would walk off with them. Our time ran out and we had to hurry on to our next stop. This stop was in Chicago, Illinois. Audrey Mueller, our secretary, had arranged for us to attend the Ice Follies, the Swimmers' Club, and if time permitted,we were to visit Alfred Nixon who was manager of Nixon's Roller Derby, featuring Ruth Hewitt,Jac- queline Roy and Betty Wise. As we were leaving the station, we were interviewed by Elaine House. We arrived at the hotel Just as Winifred Firman, Willa Yarwood, and Catherine Sauro were leaving to do their shopping. Bob Gornbeln drove us to the Ice Follies in his taxicab. Marion June, and Corless Printup were waiting in the ticket line when we arrived. Kenneth Sherk and Lorraine Hartman, called the King and Queen of the Ice, were the stars of the show. William MacDonald handed us our program at the door. Among the names on the program we discovered thatxEffie Clark, Corrine Jamieson, James Schaeffer and Hubert Stubbs were co-stars in the show. After we had witnessed the outstanding performance of these stars, we stopped at a dinette run by Bob Linn and Esther Olson. From here we went to the Swimmers' Club. We were driven to the club by Alice Zimmerman in her convertible coupe. Charles McCombs, owner of the club, met us at the entrance and escort- ed us to a table at the edge of the huge marble pool. Several of our former classmates were present. Among them were Catherine Chesterfield, Joyce Bovee and Dorothy Auman. Two of the performers were giving a high diving exhibition while some of the others prepared for their acts. Clair Hermanson was the star of the show and was awarded the trophy for his high diving exhibition. Audrey Jordan won the cup for the 220 yard free style race. Cyril Krulisky, who was manager of theiclub, informed us that our secretary had reservations for us on the next tra n. We arrived at Grand Central station the next morning and rode around this huge station on a Jet Scooter. We stopped at a refreshment stand and order- ed a bite to eat from Ann Dell. While there,we listened to Margaret Reichert and Lois Abbott playing piano duets on their own radio program. Page 36 ,,, CLASS PROPHECY Riding out of the station we turned over the scooter to Irene Campbell and Norma Zoda who were in charge of transportation in the terminal. We noticed that pogo sticks were the latest things in the line of transportation. I We were not able to stay long in this city, but while there we visited the Statue of Liberty where Don Kline was our guide. From there we went to Radio City where the Joy Snyder Hour was in progress. From there we went to Carnegie Hall where Margaret Connell was presenting a concert on her harp. She was accom- panied by Barbara Palm. Alison Redaway and Eugenia Zinkievich were usherettes. From New York City we took a plane instead of the train. Eugene Whit- acre was pilot and William woock was co-pilot. Marjorie Horne and Imogene Hewitt were stewardesses. We stopped at Albany to pick up several government officials and to our surprise, Carol White, Lois Crawford, Gerald Silliphant, and Robert Stipp were among them. At last we arrived at the airport in the old home town. We hurried to our Alma Mater. As we strolled down the halls we saw many familiar faces. In one of the classrooms Mona Des Jardin was giving a lecture to a group of mothers, Jean Flanagan, Marjorie Hilts, Roberta House, and Marjorie Corbin, on NHow to Bring up Children.W Among the changes in the faculty, we noticed that Harry Olenik was in charge of the art department, and Doris Nelson and Shirley Palmiter headed the music department. As the darkness fell slowly over the round object, the door leading to the future closed. As we departed from our former classmates, we realized that each one was doing his share in making America a better place in which to live. ARLENE KILMER PAULINE MERAW Class Prophets Page 37 CLASS WILL This is a world of changing times. The citizens of our democracy are always striving to meet new goals of greater heights. Likewise, we, the Seniors of LaSalle High School, must move on from this great institution. It is with ex- treme sadness that we depart. But such is life! Our charitable nature, forces us to leave some of our vast wealth to fellow schoolmates. Because of the abundance of these gifts, their high value, and the amount of work involved in handing out said gifts,we hereby appoint Miss Wustrack, our capable advisor, true friend and energetic math teacher, as chief distributor. Her job will be that of maintaining peace and order throughout the mad scramble for things left behind., ' With our time drawing nigh, we, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and For- ty-Five,. being of sound body, and less sound mind, now present our final will. Any benefactor discovered trying to change this testament, immediately herewith, will be cut off from all and any of its gifts. There- fore, in view Of the fact that Mr. Peet and Mr. Schwinger will undoubtedly miss us, we leave our eternal memory for strength to carry on their great work. U To the faculty,we leave our deepest sorrow for having to withdraw such excellent students as Ourselves from this institution of higher learning. Knowing the many faults of the Class of '46, we are also leaving several hundred NB'sN and WC'sU to be used un- sparingly on all report cards. These are left as a result of the vast surplus not needed by such a well-behaved class as that of '45. In case this aid is insufficient, the gremlins have landed in a B-29 behind the school to make it possible for the faculty to wget away from it all!n To Miss Wustrack, our class advisor, we leave our heartfelt thanks for her wonderful co-operation and guidance in all of our class projects. To the Juniors, our inexperienced successors, we leave our title of HHonorable Seniorsu with all the dignity and popularity which accompanies it. Furthermore, we leave encouragement that they may imitate our accomplishments. Yet, because of our extreme superi- ority, we realize that they can never obtain the success which we have acquired. - X To the Sophomores, those insignificant bits of youth,we leave hope that they may struggle through two more laborious years of dili- gent study. Also, to the feminine portion of the Class of '47,the Senior girls return the Sophomore boys -- a little the worse for wear. We have condescended to leave the following most treasured valu- ables to a few honored individuals. We trust that they will ac- cept these gifts with all due sense of responsibility and guard them for posterity. Because of wartime shortages and lack of fi- nancial backing, some of the supplies we desired were not available. For the first year since 1942, we were able to obtain hard covers for the Ongiara. A new method of printing, called planographing, has also been used. Our theme is the nAmerican Way,W which we chose because, especially in this year of victory in the world conflict, we should all be proud of the Ameri- can way of doing things. Our boys have fought and died for these things, and it is up to us to uphold them as we go out into the world. u A great deal of hard work has been put forth to bring you this year- book. We hope you will enjoy it. , Don Dilmbre, Editor. Page 41 ' I SENIOR PLAY A ' I The 1945 Senior Class play, HJonnny on the Sp0t,H by Anne Coulter Mar- tens, was presented the afternoon of April llth and the evening of April 12. , This sparkling comedy in three acts concerns the trials and tribula- tions of Johnny, a returned sailor, who, quite by accident, has become the town's hero.l The pursuits of his countless female admirers accounted for much of the play's gayity and humor, but the story is complicated by the arrival of Sherry Lee, a radio singer, with whom he falls in love. Secondary to the major plot were the difficulties encountered by Johnny's mother, Melinda, in managing her failing hat shop. f Both performances of the play, directed by Mrs. Erwin, were enjoyed by a-house filled to capacity. A Page 56 SENIOR COUNCIL JUNIOR COUNCIL The Senior Council sponsored many worthwhile activities during the year under the capable leadership of James Paul,President, Gordon Miller, Vice- president, and Mr. Simpson, Advisor. . In December the Council sponsored a concert by the Niagara Falls Phil- harmonic Orchestra and donated one-half of the proceeds to LaSalle's NRecW and the other to the Music Library of the Niagara Falls Public Schools. Plans for e new traffic system were formulated by the Senior Council in cooperation with the Junior Council and put into effect. I J The Council also promoted such projects as May Day, the Welcoming Com- mittee, War Stamp Sales, the Red Cross, and the Community Chest Drive. y The Junior Council has been engaged in numerous-activities this year, such as Red Cross, Community Chest, Stamp Sales and various drives for the War Effort. We have been occupied lately in writing an amendment to the constitution concerning the qualifications of officers. Often tickets are sent to the Junior Council to be distributed to the homerooms. The Vice-president, Bob Dilmore , visits the Senior Council once in a while in order to .know and relate to the rest of the Council what is happening there. Each member of the Junior Council ls entitled to a Junior Council pin which signifies his membership. A This year's members have been very co-operative and have achieved a great deal because of the interest they have put into their enterprises. They have assisted the president and have made this year one of the most successful school years. p Page 57X ---M , 1 l 1 Kyla A1551 , X 1 .j5i?E? X tw NATIONAL HONUR SOCIETY G at sy u -ALAN foj .l I W- The LaSalle Chapter of the National Honor Society, since its installa- tion on March 22, 1944, has been steadily taking its rightful place in the life at LaSalle High School. The Chapter began with seventeen active members and four- teen probationary members. In the fall of 1944 four seniors were inducted. At its third impressive induction program on March 7, 1945, through its traditional tapping ceremony it admitted seven active and ten probationary members. Member- ship is determined by a vote of the Senior High School faculty and the Faculty Honor Society Committee. The National Honor Society motto being nNoblesse Obligen which means Nrank imposes obligationu the Chapter's aims are toward the betterment of the school by the encouragement within the members of the qualities of character, -service, leadership, and scholarship. In order to raise the scholarship level of the school, the Chapter presents a plaque to the homeroom in each the.Junior High School and the Senior High School with the best average. For the enter- tainment of the students and for the financing of future school projects, popu- lar films have been shown frequently throughout the school year.. Also, through a Christmas Splash Party, a Banquet held with the Niagara Falls High School Chapter, and at an informal Birthday Party to welcome the new members of March, the members have had very enjoyable times together. We have received many letters of appreciation from distant parts of the world thanking us for our thoughtfulness and resourcefulness in sending the papers. The fellows and girls claim that receiving NThe Griffonn gives them a strong incentive of renewed faith and hope for a better future in which all the children of the world will have the opportunities and advantages they enjoyed in their Alma Mater. The fundamental purpose of having a school paper is to develop' the journalistic ability many students possess. Also, it serves to give the students the proper outlook on high school life. Under the leadership of Mrs. Davis, the staff might be compared to that of a regular newspaper. With our slogan of NCo- operationn we have enjoyed a successful, worthwhile season. ' WThe Griffonn is a member of the Western New York Interscholastic Press Association from which it has received numerous ribbons in recognition of its merit. It is also a charter member of the Niagara Falls Scholastic Press Association.
