CA) The 1980-81 Softball team } ! finished the season with a very — deceiving 3-8 record. With basically the same team which compiled an 11-3 record the year before, the Lions were +- ' usually one hit away from victory. (3y() The season was by no means a failure because many underclassmen, who will be the backbone of our team for the next two years, gained valuable playing experience. Cathy Davis, Tonya Tirotta, Connie Adamo, Tami Lether- man, Josie Maternowski, Toni Swiatoy, and Caroline Richard- son will be hard to replace, as all were starters for 3 years. Connie Adamo won the fielding trophy for the second year in a row, and Tami Letherman led the team in hitting. Coach Johnson felt all the team members helped as the Lions gelled to get to the semi- finals before a heartbreaking loss to Adams in the tournament. Coach Johnson is hoping for much improvement from the underclassmen next year and the incoming sophomores and freshmen. upp. rt: Janine Adamo takes a stance and keeps her eyes on the ball as she awaits the pitch, mid. The 1981 boys ' track team, nicknamed the Smoke Squad, lacked the depth it takes to win dual meets, but coaches Joseph Hard- man and Charles Lawrence felt that determination and strong leadership by captains Matt Bashaw, Brad Hicks, Leroy Kingsberry, Randy Macon, and Tony Walker led to awesome showings in major meets. Honors went out to the 1600 and 400 meter relay teams. The 1600 relay, consisting of sophomores Jackie Armstrong and Atha Baugh, junior Paul Brown and senior Brad Hicks, was chosen 2nd Team All Conference, set a school record and became sectional champs. The 400 relay team, consisting of Leroy Kingsberry, a sophomore, Kim Col- eman and Elliot Lipsey, both juniors, and Tony Walker, a senior, set school, sectional, and area records along with being chosen 1st Team All Conference. Individual honors went out to Macon who set a new school record and qualified for state in the discus. Armstrong and Baugh were also given All-Conference honors in their respective events. Other key returnees for the 1982 season include Spencer Moore, Greg Ryan, Carl Hubbard, and Dar- rell Dale. upp. left: Concentration is all over Atha Baugh ' s face as he clears a hurdle, upp. mid: Leroy Kingsberry lets the shot fly in a dual meet at the new track at LHS. mid. rt: Paul Brown looks at his landing spot as he flies in the long jump. Lack of depth and seasoned seniors hurt the Lion Har- riers, but an abundance of underclassmen talent should make future years very promising. The 1981 captains were seniors, Shawn Pettit and Robert Toth. Both showed great leadership through many rough times. The rest of the team was comprised of five juniors, a sophomore, and a freshman. Mr. Kovatch feels that in the years to come LaSalle ' s Cross Country Team will be able to rebuild its program back to the dominance it has shown in past years. Mid.
