if) ' td l c q. CD The 1981 girls ' track season was a learning experience for first year coach Johnie Jonnson. Mr. Johnson, using a limited amount of girls and a limited amount of equipment, managed to guide his girls to some very good perfor- mances during the season. Senior Marilyn Newbon scored heavily for the Lady Lions in the 100, 200 and relay events as did senior Andrea Fowler in the hurdles, long jump, and 1600 relay. Mr. Johnson was also pleas- ed by some talented underclassmen. Junior sprinters Laurie Nowak and Jackie Taylor showed good potential as did sophomores Sherry Mailey, Lois Majors, and Sharon Newbon. School, sectional, conference, and area records were set by both 800 and 1600 meter relay teams, but the lack of strong distance runners and high jumpers hampered the team considerably. Along with brand new track facilities and talented returnees such as Kelly Klute and Tanya Winston, Mr. Johnson ' s second season should be much better. upp. mid: Jackie Taylor sprints out the final turn of the 440. upp. rt: Lois Ma- jors completes her leg of the 440 relay with a look of relief, mid. rt: Passing of the baton is important as shown here by Zennia Phillips. gjH Kec First Row: Andrea Fowler, Marilyn Newbon. The 1981 boys ' track team, nicknamed the Smoke Squad, lacked the depth it takes to win dual meets, but coaches Joseph Hard- man and Charles Lawrence felt that determination and strong leadership by captains Matt Bashaw, Brad Hicks, Leroy Kingsberry, Randy Macon, and Tony Walker led to awesome showings in major meets. Honors went out to the 1600 and 400 meter relay teams. The 1600 relay, consisting of sophomores Jackie Armstrong and Atha Baugh, junior Paul Brown and senior Brad Hicks, was chosen 2nd Team All Conference, set a school record and became sectional champs. The 400 relay team, consisting of Leroy Kingsberry, a sophomore, Kim Col- eman and Elliot Lipsey, both juniors, and Tony Walker, a senior, set school, sectional, and area records along with being chosen 1st Team All Conference. Individual honors went out to Macon who set a new school record and qualified for state in the discus. Armstrong and Baugh were also given All-Conference honors in their respective events. Other key returnees for the 1982 season include Spencer Moore, Greg Ryan, Carl Hubbard, and Dar- rell Dale. upp. left: Concentration is all over Atha Baugh ' s face as he clears a hurdle, upp. mid: Leroy Kingsberry lets the shot fly in a dual meet at the new track at LHS. mid. rt: Paul Brown looks at his landing spot as he flies in the long jump.
