00 (J) CD i5 T5 C b I- The 1981 baseball team was in- deed the Cinderella team in the city. No one picked the Lions to win the sectional after a disap- pointing 9-14-1 season. Consider- ing the team lost 7 of 14 of those games by one, their record could have been 16-7-1. Stronger points of the team were pitchers Robert Toth and Keith Kopinski. Keith pitched the only no-hitter against Penn, and Robert ended a superb sectional performance by hurling a one-hitter against St. Joe. Top that victory with a two-run homer by third baseman Jim Mabry, and strong team fielding, and the Lions came out on top 6- 0. Coach Rzeszewski felt the steady batting of Denny Morris and Keith Kopinski, .303 and .407 respectively, helped the team in the clutch. As far as fielding goes, the team held spectacular .942 fielding percentage led by Jim Mabry, shortstop Denny Morris, Keith Kopinski at second and Mar- ty Pipp at first base. Coach Rzeszewski felt that the team gell- ed at the end of the year. He also felt the Washington game was the biggest one of the sectional victories. 9 . -t n% - - P:|i;f ¥ KNEELING: John Kovach, Dave Lehner, Keith Kopinski, Marty Pipp, Allan Ullery, Kenny Lloyd, Ed Witulski, Ron Wituski, Tom Mabry, Paul Patus. The 1981 Golf team was, to say the least, disappointing. The loss of the number 1 3 players hurt. Bright spots were the consistence of senior captain Jeff Kozakiewicz and sophomore Bob Mabry. Juniors Shawn Pettit, Russ Lechtanski, and Mark Karczewski added depth to the squad. The team got a new coach this year. Jim Kowalski, a teacher at Dickin- son, replaced Bill Roberts, who retired last year. The team was victorious only twice, but Coach Kowalski was pleased how the team held together. He also felt Jeff Kozy did a fine job as captain in leading the team. Jeff once again advanced to the regionals. He is the only golfer at LHS to ac- complish such a feat back-to- back. He shot a 77 to advance to the regionals, where he missed the semi-state by one stroke. Coach Kowalski has five let- termen coming back next year, including Shawn Pettit, who has been on the team for four years. He feels if the team can shoot a consistent 339 they can win many more golf matches next year. They may even go to the regionals next year. upp. It: Junior Shawn Pettit uses an iron to cut through the rough at beautiful Elbe!
