Index 1 i LA SALL HIGH SCHOOL LANTERN 1976 Volume 1 LaSalle High School 2701 W. Elwood Avenue. South Be 3f(,i4ndiana 4662c Accept Me As I Am Seventeen-hundred students crammed into a two-story building every morning promptly at 8:00 a.m. All are united by one common bond — trying to make it through the school day. But, when the picture is put into its proper perspective, one finds that each student is his own individual. I represent that fact. My thoughts, dreams, and goals distin- guish me from everyone else. My appearance and personality are unmatched by any other student, am one face in the crowd; accept me as I am. We ' ve Only Just Begun 3 The Bicentennial will be a big part of this year throughout the country and I, as a citizen, cannot ignore it. Evidence of growth and development may be seen everywhere. South Bend itself is taking on a new appear- ance, yet reminders of days gone by may still be found. These days have been important to the nation and must not be forgotten. Many new processes and techniques were developed during this era. If it were not for this period of experimenting and inventing, where would we be today? LaSalle is a good example of growth. Since its opening in 1 965, the building has been expanded by the addition of a new wing to the front. Student enrollment was changed when the freshmen class was trans- ferred to Central, making LaSalle a three-grade school. Everything has come a long way. With these things in mind, I remember what has been; reflect on the past. ._. ' -: r-. : ; =5 Courtesy of South Bend Tribune We ' ve Only Just Begun 5 I Am Proud mm ' 1 tH ' ■HI ' ' ' -, In these days of patriotic enthu- siasm, I find myself moved by the spirit. The sight of the American flag instills the pride that I wasn ' t quite sure was there. I catch myself smiling when I encounter one of South Bend ' s renovated fire hydrants. It no longer is a lifeless object, but has become a symbol of the city ' s willingness and pride to participate in the nation ' s bicen- tennial. I am glad that my forefathers were around two hundred years ago to have enough pride to pur- sue their dreams of a strong, inde- pendent country. Now they are gone and someone is needed to carry on this dream. I accept the challenge; I am proud. We ' veOnly Just Begun 7 I Have A Hold On Today As a member of the younger gener- ation, I am still growing and learning. ' Even so, l,JDelieve I am an important part of now. My beliefs and actions may be different from many, but I stick to them. I refuse to be molded by others, i want to make the most of what I have. When I look back to earlier times and see how youth was then, pro- tected from society ' s evils, I want to believe they never had it so good. Is this possible? Today, many more young people are involved in impor- tant roles of society. They suddenly become adults. I also know the ugly things that are going on with youth today. There are more temptations for them to over- come. Society ' s morals toward drugs, alcohol, and sex have drastically changed. Much more is accepted today that would have been horrifying to the past ages. It is my choice as to my life and what is best for me. I know what I am looking to as my goal and I can only hope it will turn out to be what is best for me in my time. In my own way; have a hold on today.  Lt « V 4 ' i - N r i i ..-. •■• la ' 4 i _ A ' I SlSn. ' I iif «.(9rj n. - ' g ' [Tt0t N5PllP iihwiv vuaiiis! A k. M I Am Free I have no limitations on my imagi- nations, hopes, or feelings. I am not condemned for my thoughts. I am free to choose my lifestyle and to pur- sue my goals in a manner that pleases me. My morals depend on my own beliefs and not on what someone else thinks is right or wrong. I stand on my own feet. When the time comes, I will be able to vote for my choice of the nation ' s leaders. I am guaranteed the free- doms of speech, press, and religion. Yet, I am left in complete control of how I handle these freedoms. My country is celebrating its independ- ence. I, too, can celebrate; I am free. We ' ve Only Just Begun 11 I Look Toward The Future Courtesy of South Bend Tribune In all that has taken place these past two hundred years, who can say what will happen wit hin the next years? Downtown South Bend will obviously have taken on its new look and be appreciated by many. The new schools, now under construc- tion, will be completed and occupied by hundreds of youths who will even- tually carry on in my place. I look toward the future with anxiety as to what it will bring. Many things will be forgotten and I will probably be one of them. Yet, I feel no sorrow. Thoughts will mature, dreams will be shattered, goals will be set and I again broken. But, what tomorrow will bring does not frighten me. With great hope, look toward the future. ' -c i 1- r We ' ve Only Just Begun 1 3 14 j r ' r l- K 111 ■gl V 1 laMHBitiiii. ' m ' l It is only natural that I should be aroused by the changes that go on around me. I ann part of it and will be in the years to come. What will become of me and my environment? I can ' t be sure. I can only try to make a place for myself doing something to suit me and to benefit others. I would like to take part in improving my com- munity, in moving along the inevitable changes to take place. What progress will take place among my own city? How about my fellow students, what paths will they choose to follow? Again, I don ' t know. But, of course, curiosity gets the better of me. The Spirit of ' 76 lives on; I am eager to see. I Am Eager To See We ' ve Only Just Begun 15 I do my thing and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations. And you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you and I am L And if by chance we find each other, its beautiful. Frederick S. Perls • • jiife  .._ -r-r- rfWW - r Q ' f Ji MW 1 e r1 tr- C 1 I have given you my feelings; sorted them out for you to read and laugh at, or think over seriously. My spirit for pride, freedom, and what is to come can touch you, if you will only let me into your life and help you to get involved. I know thoughts and ideas will vary, after all, we are all individuals. Appreciate our differ- ences and eventually we will under- stand each other. I am my own person and can only be as such. I refuse to be phony because I hate to see it in others. Be what you wish, believe in what you want, but don ' t degrade me for my lifestyle. Let us share and become one united, instead of each groping blindly for what it takes two to find. I can accept you for you. Accept me for what I can give; only then will we discover each other. Each member of the team must cover a certain area of the playing field. Every individual has his own way of calling the plays. The sched- ule of opponents ranges from war to imagination with home games against composition and grammar. Pep assemblies don ' t find students cheering for the English team. The sports award assemblies don ' t acknowledge those participants on the team. But, it ' s statistically true that without these team members, English would be chalked up as a loss. Mrs. Margaret Mye.s 50 It Together Easy To Be Hard 51 Breaking The Language Barrier What Is the use ot learning a for- eign language ' After all, English is still pretty tricky. If you talk to the per- sonnel in LaSalle ' s foreign language department, you will find there is something more than words being taught here Culture and heritage of different countries are brought into the classroom through movies, slides, guest speakers, and luncheons There are enough programs here to keep even a foreigner interested Mr, Hoffman teaches German, but is also skilled in speaking fluent Rus- sian Mrs Perusek and Dr Aguero man the Spanish stations Mrs Guhl lends a hand by instructing all levels of French and Conversational Span- ish What IS the use of learning a for- eign language ' With these teachers and courses, you are bound to find something to your liking and that you may use later Most colleges require a language and recommend it as a col- lege prep course. Hundreds of practice hours each year go into the various divisions of this vibrant culture. Without this staff of interested, hard-working teachers, the students could not perform to perfection. The individual courses are taught to prepare students for actual per- formance in front of an audience. Mr. Vogel teaches all vocal classes and backgrounds in music. Mr. Singleton and Mr. Norman take great care in seeing that their students are able to march at football games. Mr. Fisher is also in charge of freshmen from Cen- tral. Many fine concerts and pro- grams are presented to the student body and the public, with planning and practice devoted to these events. Compliments flow back as to their fine service to the school. They earn their own reward-contentment for a job well done. Easy To Be Hard 53 From Past To Present Mr. Gilbert Cioriano 1 54 Mr. George Griffith New faces in the various parts of the history department accented the 1976 school yea r. Mr. Moyer tried his hand at a U.S. History class, while Mr. Hoevel dabbled in Government. Mr. Murray found himself with one foot in the health department, while proving that he was experienced in the field of U.S. History. Videotapes, movies, and records were valuable instruments that were appreciated by both teacher and stu- dent Mr. Gavin and Mr. Moyer took advantage of simulation games to arouse student interest. The newest element in the history department was the development of a Minimum Achievement Level Test taken by all of the U.S. History stu- dents. A similar test is given in Gov- ernment classes. The biggest thing that the history teachers hoped to accomplish was preparation for experiences in the outside world. Easy To Be Hard 55 Facts And Figures Add Up 56 dl 1 .1 Mr. William Roberts Despite the groans over Geometry proofs and sighs over Algebra Trig cosines, life in the math department marched on! This year saw a new math teacher, Mrs. Oldenburg, who filled in for Mrs. Probst. She taught a touch of almost every aspect of Math, with Geometry and High School Math topping the list. A change in the regular routine involved Mrs. McKibben. She shifted from the math department to the sci- ence department, where she taught Chemistry. Calculus and Geometry were taken care of by Mr. Robinson while Miss Guertin helped him out in the latter area. Mr. Peczkowski also lent a hand in Geometry, while tackling Algebra Trig. Mr. Roberts was handy to bal- ance the load by teaching Algebra Trig also. Although erasing in math was a fre- quent chore, its teachings won ' t so easily disappear. Math will be a valua- ble tool, no matter how frustrating it proved to be! a ' -7 ' ;i Mr. William Robinson Easy To Be Hard 57 The Art Of Being Creative ■■■H M ■H| L • ' ' HPiHHIPI 1 m r H |L 1 ■m E I HP 31 k 1 r ' t ' fll m ' H r j|% p r IBSni  lj Bbl iJ I - ' : ' lii There were art classes to satisfy every talent, from beginner to col- lege-bound and everything in between. Fundamental Art, taught by Mr. Fotiou, Mrs. Ladd, and Mr. Stivers, was offered for those in their first years of art. Studio Art, intructed by Mr. Stivers, was available for those students planning to take art in col- lege. Mini courses in Graphics, Drawing, Painting, and Ceramics were also available to those students wishing to dabble in specific areas. 58 A Little Bit Of Everything Mrs. Janet Doolittle Embroidery, Crocheting, and Clothing and Textiles ranked among the most popular in Home Ec this year. Other classes ranged from Cake Decorating to Singles Living, all of which were offered to both guys and girls. Home Economics instructors were: Mrs. Doolittle, Mrs. Dukai, Miss Row- land, and Mrs. Lizzi. Other favorites in this area were Family Relations and Child Develop- ment. Both proved interesting and a good start toward planning future family life. Easy To Be Hard 59 The Sky ' s The Limit Animal, plant, or mineral? Whi- chever you chose, its science was available to you through LaSalle ' s science program. Applied Life Sci- ence and Earth Science was offered just for starters. Then there was Biol- ogy and Chemistry. After that there was advanced Biology and Physics, If that wasn ' t enough, how about Astronomy? Whatever the interest, the topic was thoroug hly discussed within the science classes of LaSalle, 60 Achieving Total Fitness 1 ■r — — j B| BL A — Mr. Edward Faulkens ▼ T Mr. Barkley, Mr. Faulkens, and Mr. Murray banded together to teach Health, a semester requirement for all incoming sophomores. Skeletons, speakers, and lots of movies were teaching aids that helped to convey ideas from teacher to student. For those interested in advanced Health, a Medical Termmology course was taught by Mr, Murray. This course was ideal for those plan- ning to go into medicine, as a doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Easy To Be Hard 61 Preparation For The Preparation for the business world was made just a little bit easier due to the business courses offered at LaSalle. Shorthand, and Filing were offered for the money facet of business. Data Processing and Business Math and Calculating Machines were available to students going into business in those forms. Job Application was a mini course teaching all the how-to ' s of getting a job. Typing was perhaps the most popular with the students because of its convenience in all areas of the business world. OEA, ICT, COE, and Intensive office lab were organizations that helped students work in actual busi- ness situations. •62 World Of Business Easy To Be Hard 63 students in PVE were educated in many subject areas. Typing, English, and Driver ' s Ed were just a few of the offered courses. Almost every PVE student was given an outside job. The money they made went into a savings account. The students could withdraw money but they didn ' t receive their bank books until they graduated. PVE was established for those stu- dents needing extra help and atten- tion. At the same time students learned to get along under actual business conditions. Learning And Training From trampoline to swimming pool, our four physical education teachers were there to emphasize new skills and help improve old ones. Mr. Rzeszewski and Mr Eberhard took over the boys classes, who were involved in basketball to vaulting the horse. The girls were taught by Miss Matthews and Miss Hepworth. They tried their h ands at volleyball, tumbling, softball, and gymnastics, just to name a few. The universal gym and swim- ming pool were extra assets which LaSalle was able to provide to the gym classes to make the year an enjoyable one. Practice Makes Perfect Easy To Be Hard 65 Skill Development For Mr, Richard Saunders Not only guys, but girls were involved in the Industrial Arts pro- gram this year. They could be found ' in everything fronn Drafting to Power Mechanics. Girls were even found in the other classes such as Woods, which required various creations from wood, and Auto Mechanics in which the concentration was on the car and its anatomy. Graphic Arts was also offered in which was taught, the art of designs and printing. These are just a few of the many topics taught in the Industrial Arts program at LaSalle. By 1 681 when the Indian Council was held, the mighty war parties of the Iroquois had come into the area and terrorized the local tribes, destroying villages and threatening the influence the French had established. It was LaSalle ' s plan to unite the western tribes and move most of them to the vicinity of Starved Rock on the Illinois River. There the Indians would be able to defend themselves against the Iroquois. At the same time, LaSalle hoped to build forts for the French to use as bases for extensive fur trading in the area. K }f FBi ' :i ' i:llii-i ' tiiffa y tmj This year, of course, there have again been many trials and tribula- tions of such a hard-working staff. I think LaSalle ' s yearbook is going to nnake it a tradition! What can I say about such a great group of people — it makes you want to cry sometimes. It ' s these people who stay hours after they are out of school, and do some of the crazi- est things you ' ve ever seen, who have made up this yearbook full of all the memories we hope you ' ll cherish. There are so many other people I need to thank; the one special per- son who gave me the theme to the entire book, and helped me to learn to accept; all the terrific office secretaries who gave us the help when we needed it; a few newspa- per people who rounded out our group; Mr. Derald Ailes, our pub- lishing representative, for putting up with me; and finally Mrs. Mower. Without her we really couldn ' t have done it. Who else could have taken all our messes and put them into perspective? I wouldn ' t trade this experience for anything. It has made my senior year the best ever. I hope this book will make this one of your best too. Sue Hartman Editor-in-Chief 1
