The fear of becoming faceless will never materialize as long as there are others who can recognize us as we are and we can come to an understanding and ac- knowledgement of our own selves. By accepting others and ourselves, we can better hope to achieve the peace of mind that is a much valued human possession. Conflict can hinder acceptance and lack of acceptance can make respectful coexis- tence impossible. We can feel confident that as ci result of our endeavors to accept and respect, we will be free to combine the rest of ourselves with our faces to complete the total aspects we present to each other. l P' Our faces, solitary or part of a crowd, can mirror a thousand and one different emo- tions, each distinct from the other by only the gentlest nuance. We can look upon the outside world wearing the same masks when alone or in the presence of others, or by displaying a disguise that can be changed along with our moods. A face in the role ofa mask or disguise is shunned by some as unnatural, yet main- tained by others as a necessary part of re- flecting personality. One of the many con- cerns of the student today is to preserve his own distinctive personality in the midst of a world that seems to be becoming more impersonalized as our society progresses technologically. 6 M .4 'IIQJ L .1,.'t .. There will always be performances to be staged, explanations to be given, tradi- tions to be broken, trips to be made, and assemblies to be attended. We can and do expect these events to continue while we are here to be a part of them and long af- ter our participation in them has ceased. There is not always either a possibility or a desire to take part in every function at La- Salle, nor should there necessarily be such a desire on the part of every student. This, in essence, has become the philosophy of the modern student. He becomes what he wishes as his duty to himself, and is the best person he can be as his duty to others as well as to himself. New directions and ideas are always ac- companied by new responsibilities. La- Salle's students have proven themselves both willing and able to accept the chal- lenge these responsibilities have presented in preparation for further tests to be faced in the future. 8 la
