SOME BOOKS ARE TO BE TASTED, OTHERS TO BE SWAL- LOWED, AND SOME FEW TO BE CHEWED AND DIGESTED. —Francis Bacon. You are walking down the hall after third hour. As you scan the faces of those around you do you immediately assume that the girl next to you is hast- ily swallowing her geometry home- work? Do you see Jim by the drinking fountain and surmise he choked on his English Lit.? Or are you too busy swal- lowing your history assignment? Knowledge is power. Francis Bacon said that some 300 years ago, yet man ' s accomplishments are proof of the va- Udity of that simple statement. The acquiring of knowledge— educa- tion— cannot be reduced to such con- cise phrasing. Much controversy sur- rounds education and ideas concerning the best type are varied. Obviously education should deal with the teach- ing of facts and philosophies, but shouldn ' t common sense enter into it, too? Thus it would seem the near- perfect education would be a harmo- nious blend of practical and factual learning. Is this type of education possible? Consider, if you will. Jack and Geral- dine. Both are hypothetical students at LaSalle and they are discussing with their counselors their possible courses. Jack is interested in -many different fields and he feels having some ex- posure to them would help him narrow down his choice.

Architectu and DE ai choices, yet he is also considering a teaching career. Cadet Teaching, a program for seniors to aid in schools throughout the city, would give him a practical preview of teaching. If he does not decide to teach, two English courses that would benefit in his col- lege world are Essay Writing and the Research Paper and Focus on Lan- guage. Both are designed to improve and perfect the students expression of ideas in clean and concise writing. En- gineering also interests Jack and the relatively new Project Physics would give a theoretical look at physics. Jack can now devise a program of study that will enable him to touch upon the ideas that interest him.
