John Henry Newman from The Educated Man. Mr. Herschel Hawkins represents one of the educated men of whom New- man speaks in his essay. After forty- three years of teaching, thirty-nine of which have been South Bend, Mr. Hawkins has retired with the con- clusion of the school year. Planning to move to Spencer, Indiana, Mr. Hawk- ins hopes to take advantage of time and enjoy his many hobbies. I en- joyed teaching. The Puzzle Hour by Hour Six-thirty a.m. No, it can ' t be. Dread- ing a walk to school on an empty stom- ach, you p-u-1-1 yourself out of bed. Forcing down orange juice and oat- meal, you listen to the radio for school closings. But, no such luck of snow— a high of 50 is predicted. Twenty minutes and a crowded bus ride later you arrive at LaSalle. First hour is spent yawning for the first few minutes as you adjust your eyes to the brightness. After awhile you accept the situation and decide to pay atten- tion, or at least look like you are.
