Text from Pages 1 - 214 of the 1973 volume:

Wo ■ks of art, of love. r F a m s of time A remnant of space. The moments that s h existence a P e Fit . . . t Forming a uniqueness, a oneness, between the LANTERN 1972-1973 LaSaUe High School South Bend, Indiana SOME BOOKS ARE TO BE TASTED, OTHERS TO BE SWAL- LOWED, AND SOME FEW TO BE CHEWED AND DIGESTED. —Francis Bacon. You are walking down the hall after third hour. As you scan the faces of those around you do you immediately assume that the girl next to you is hast- ily swallowing her geometry home- work? Do you see Jim by the drinking fountain and surmise he choked on his English Lit.? Or are you too busy swal- lowing your history assignment? Knowledge is power. Francis Bacon said that some 300 years ago, yet man ' s accomplishments are proof of the va- Udity of that simple statement. The acquiring of knowledge— educa- tion— cannot be reduced to such con- cise phrasing. Much controversy sur- rounds education and ideas concerning the best type are varied. Obviously education should deal with the teach- ing of facts and philosophies, but shouldn ' t common sense enter into it, too? Thus it would seem the near- perfect education would be a harmo- nious blend of practical and factual learning. Is this type of education possible? Consider, if you will. Jack and Geral- dine. Both are hypothetical students at LaSalle and they are discussing with their counselors their possible courses. Jack is interested in -many different fields and he feels having some ex- posure to them would help him narrow down his choice. Architectu and DE ai choices, yet he is also considering a teaching career. Cadet Teaching, a program for seniors to aid in schools throughout the city, would give him a practical preview of teaching. If he does not decide to teach, two English courses that would benefit in his col- lege world are Essay Writing and the Research Paper and Focus on Lan- guage. Both are designed to improve and perfect the students expression of ideas in clean and concise writing. En- gineering also interests Jack and the relatively new Project Physics would give a theoretical look at physics. Jack can now devise a program of study that will enable him to touch upon the ideas that interest him. 4 Geraldine is just as unsure as Jack in her choice of future occupation. Her involvement in the Fine Arts depart- ment has made her seriously consider a career in music. She is in the Concert Glee Club and the Orchestra (both are well known throughout the city) and is considering taking Harmony, a music theory class, and Music Appreciation. Though she is still only in Basic Art, Geraldine has hopes of progressing to painting and more advanced art courses. Geraldine can jump from Pi- casso to Politics in an English course deaUng with comparison of different pohtical systems or explore the world of communication through Modem Media. If she wishes, she can concen- trate on one topic in sociology during her senior year in the Independent Study of the Social Sciences-the only study course of its type in the city. Without the aid of a sincere and able teaching staff. Jack and Geraldine wouldn ' t be able to explore the educa- tional possibilities at LaSalle. The most diversified curriculum and modem equipment are useless without a trained and dedicated staff of adminis- trators, teachers, and counselors. Both Jack and Geraldine could be part of the 53% of juniors and seniors who have jobs. If Jack cadet teaches, he will be one of the 15% who have school- affiliated jobs. The large number of students with part-time jobs indicates a lessening of full-time students. As would be expected, two-thirds of the seniors and one-third of the juniors leave school early— many before 2:00 pm. It would seem that with this trend in decreasing full-time students, a cut in curriculum would be logical. Yet, La- Salle is increasing its course offerings every year to enable each student to benefit from the time spent in school, no matter how brief In other words, LaSalle is adapting to the students, not the student to LaSalle. This is an im- portant factor in the search for a near- perfect education— an education for the masses, an education for the individual. In evaluating the activities at LaSalle for North Central Association, teachers and visitors emphasized the variety of offerings. Certainly there is no reason a student cannot find an enjoyable activ- ity; there are enough different types of clubs to satisfy everyone. Unfortunately, many students find it difficult to join more than one club. Ei- ther they don ' t have enough time or the clubs they are interested in meet at the same time-each club day. Audio Visual, Ushers, and Booster Club are examples of service orient- ated activities which the respective clubs perform during the course of the day or at school-sponsored functions. For instructive activities, clubs like the Science and Astronomy Club offer a chance for experimentation as well as demonstrations and field trips. The newly formed AU-Sports Club deals with sports that are not present at school but nonetheless are popular. Siding, boxing, and race car driving are a few examples. national Club are two unique clubs in the city. Their main purpose is to bring unity and respect within and between cultures. During Brotherhood Week Student Government, BCS, and YFU members worked hard to present a week of activities which would review cultures around the world. BCS set up displays and presented a program. Stu- dent Government sponsored a Broth- erhood Dance and the PTA held an Ethnic Festival where food and fellow- ship was the theme. Clearly with the variety and quality of club offerings there should be no com- plaint about activities. Yet each year the same cry of apathy rings out. Is it because too many students hold jobs? Is it because Club Day eliminates the chance of joining more clubs? Are stu- dents aware of the fine programs offered? Perhaps the fault lies with the student who is content to sit back and let oth- ers organize activities— and then com- plain that the same people receive all the honors. Whatever the answer is, a change in attitude is necessary if the varied activity program is to continue. ¥,f Mr. Hendricks receives a plaque In Appreciation from Student Government friends. Band Members Seek Funds Selling Fruitcakes. It ' s November, you ' re standing at at- tention on the field, ready to put all the Httle maneuvers you ' ve been memo- rizing for the past week into action for the last time. As you wait for the Drum Major to five the signal, your mind re- fiects. C ' mon now underclassmen, get your bods movin. We don ' t have all day! You ' ve just committed the sin of all sins— you made a left face instead of a right and bumped into a big bad se- nior. It is misty and your hair is frizzy. When will it all end, you wonder. The next few hours are spent on the mucky, slimy football field. Good shoes are traded for tennis shoes and after three years of marching, these begin to look pretty tacky. But, it is a clear brisk night, perfect football weather. Tweet, tweet, tweet and the show has begun ... for your last time. Even cold weather doesn ' t keep band members from marching in the Thanksgiving Holiday Parade. Pep Band Members pcrlorm at a pep a.ssenibly. As one pep band member puts it, At least I get a free season ticket to all the games. That ' s the right spirit. This year ' s jazz band was character- istically sporadic. What stood in the way to fast success was the lack of re- hearsal time. Nevertheless, the band showed their great talent at the Jazz Band Clinic at Washington High School in February where all the South Bend High Schools were represented. They also performed at Colfax School and added depth to the Concert Band ' s annual spring concert on March 14. Senior soloist and star drummer Bob Bierwagen performs at a jazz band clinic. Mr. James Lewis Casaday, long-time theater teacher in South Bend, coordinated the production, which was his last effort before retir- ing. Craig Ashley and Scott Miller commanded male leads, with support from about 20 other LaSalle dancers, singers and musicians. Melissa Gard and Dave Koloszar played Emily and George in Our Town, the spring drama. Other cast members were Kim Purucker, Sue Magley. Scott Miller and Juhe Wilkins. Mr. Edward Nugent of the English De- partment played the stage manager. The play was different from recent productions in that it presented a deeper message: People do not fully appreciate Ufe. The Carpenters, Picasso, and Rod McKuen The LaSalle Singers, in their fifth year, are a group of twenty four juniors and seniors who combine their talents to present musical concerts for the sur- rounding community. In order to be- come a member of this ensemble, each individual had to audition before Mr. John Vogel, the director. Practices are held mornings between seven and eight o ' clock. Should the National Honor Society be designated as a service group or should the group just be an honorary society as the title says? This is the question which rises after each spring induction. As a step towards a more active so- ciety, rather than inducting the usual 7% of juniors and 3% of seniors every spring, there will now be an admit- tance of 12% of the junior class and no seniors will be inducted. Members sold flares and stationary to make money in 72-73 and a tutoring program at La- Salle was reestabhshed. Mr. Stephen Kosana is NHS sponsor. Young Politicians Experience Communication Difficulties Many people inquire as to the function of Student Government, but few people realize the services provided by the members. Because of the South Bend Community School Corpora- tion ' s policy concerning hockey, none of the high schools are able to use the school ' s name in accordance with the team. LaSalle Hockey became Lion Hockey and the Lions roared on the ice! Consisting of mostly sophomores and juniors, coach John Murray built an inexperienced team into a tough crew that ended the season with a 9-5-2 record. Stiff competion from such schools as Marian and Gary Andrean provided the experience the team needed. The Lions finished third in league play. The past few years have seen a trend toward condemning athletics in high school. Arguments against the over- emphasis of sports propose that stu- dent measure their school not by the quality of education, but by the quan- tity of games their teams win. Is this assumption justified? Many schools place stipulations on players with regard to their grades-they must be kept up. Athletics demand a strict physical discipline on players that leaves no time for goofmg-off ' . Cer- tainly it would seem the athlete is, or should be, the model example of stu- dent life. Consider a school without sports. Clearly there would be a drop in extra- curricular functions, but more impor- tantly the unity of the school would be lessened. Students who might other- wise be unmotivated can use sports as an outlet for boredom and frustrations. In addition, sports teaches dedication and responsibility (sometimes to stu- dents who wouldn ' t normally take the opportunity to learn these characteristics.) rv . ■ J  Obviously then, athletics is beneficial to both the player and the spectator. And with the growth of the httle sport, these benefits are becoming more no- ticeable. Where once wrestling and swimming at LaSalle were considered insignificant, their support has grown to the stature of the more traditional football and basketball team. Now a student with prowess in track or tennis receives the recognition he might not have in earlier years. The rise of the little sport has helped to solve the potentially controversial sub- ject regarding girls and their role in athletics. The girls sports program has certainly grown with swimming and volleyball gaining varsity status. When the courts reversed the IHSAA ruling concerning girls ' nonpartici- pance with boys in sports, the decision threw coaches, team members, and educators into an uproar. Girls are now participating in non-contact sports such as swimming, golf, tennis, and track, and LaSalle has felt the effect of this decision with a few brave girls on the track team. Right: The hoop says it all. Below Righi: Senior quarterback Bob Pinckert plunges forward in a hopeful gain. Pigskin Action! As a season comes to a close sports fans everywhere cling to the memories left by the games. LaSalle ' s predominately young Foot- ball Team began the season in the Jamboree with an impressive showing as the Lions stunned Adams with a 14- 7 victory. Despite defeats lying ahead, the Lions opened a regular season well against one of the state ' s toughest op- ponents. Facing a highly ranked Rich- mond team, known to shut out its vic- tims, LaSalle was able to score. Although the Washington Panthers managed to slip by the Lions, LaSalle picked up the pace, racking up victo- ries over Kokomo, Culver, Penn and Clay, This year ' s football performance gives promise for next year, which will proudly sport 18 returning lettermen, most of whom are juniors. At the close of his season Ross Stephenson resigned from his post as head football coach and health teacher at LaSalle, as he was offered the job as coordinator for physical education for the South Bend Community School Corporation. We are in debt to Mr. Stephenson for all that he has accom- plished at LaSalle not only with his football team but with his classes. As a kind, patient and hard working man he sets an example to which we can all pattern our hves. We extend our good luck wishes to Mr. Stephenson for his continued success. X-Men Stomp Opposition Sporting the best record among La- Salle ' s fall sports, the 1972 Cross Country Team maintained the steady winning tradition. Led by top runners Bob Bratton and Ken Hale, LaSalle pulled together a pleasing 8 and 2 record. Among the rivals left behind were city foes Adams and Riley, and Penn, defending conference champion. The thrilling meet with Mishawaka proved the stamina and poise of a sohd team. Not only did the team give evi- dence of top runners, but also of depth. The meet was tied until our sixth man crossed the finish line to bring victory. From Row: Harry Taylor, Raphael Morton, Bob Bratton, and Dale Kokot. The pack begins to thin as the race progresses. Tennis at LaSalle High School is no longer spoken of in whispers and ac- companied by snickers because there is now pride in this sport at LHS. The 1972 Tennis season was vastly im- proved over last year ' s sad season. The respectable 4-5 record does not truly represent the ability of the team. The team overcame many obstacles through sheer determination and hard work. The team adjusted to a new coach, Mr. Robert Epley, as he also ad- justed to the complications of being a first year coach. This year ' s was a young team experience-wise, which also contributed to the problems. Led by captain Jim Meyers, Most Valuable Player John Jankowski, who was also the Kiwanis Award Winner, and next year ' s captain Dave Patillo, the team put forth strenuous effort and in return were rewarded with the strength of a basically well-developed team. Big wins included matches with Washing- ton, Penn, and Clay. With many prob- lems solved next year ' s team can only improve. Cer- tainly the defeat of Riley while it reigned as number one was a highlight of the season— as was the upsurge of talented juniors— Kruszewski, Law- rence, and Nailon. Though the 14-8 win— loss record was not impressive, the games were often last minutes decisions. Under the lead- ership of Robert Warren, Jim Nowicki, and Gary Moore, the Lions survived fourth quarter comebacks by Washing- ton and Mishawaka. Unfortunately, Adams and St. Joe held up to win one and three point heartbreakers. With the talent that is apparent in this year ' s juniors, Leo ' s Lions should be a strong area threat next year. The team won the NIVC and Sectional ti- tles for the second consecutive year, and placed second in the regional. The grapplers ended their duel meet season with an 8-2 record, losing only to pow- erful Riley and Niles High Schools. The team had a precarious start with wrestlers losing weight and a poor turnout of participants. But through the expert coaching and guidance of Mr. Vargo and his assistant Mr. Ham- ilton, the individuals fused into a team which formed a winning combination. The motto, which reflected the team ' s spirit, was Never say die, say damn. This theory, coined by Mr. Vargo, ex- pressed the dedication of every single wrestler on the team. They worked, sweating out practices, going on even though injured, and they became a tight group. With seven returning let- termen, next year ' s team will be as good, if not better than, this year ' s team. A strong team of veteran players form the nucleus of the varsity team. Almost all of the first string players acquired letters last year. Although Coach Rzes- zewski indicated some need for out- field strength, the infield had more than its share of talent. With four pitchers competing for the mound, the Lions should be able to prevent scoring by the opposing team. Baseball Schedule April 11 NUes 14 John Adams 17 Jackson 19 21 24 26 28 Penn Elk. There are only two returning seniors, co-captains Jim Shaw, and Greg Thompson. Hopes were high that the team will repeat last year ' s performance and end distinctly lowering the team average. Without one, LaSalle cannot expect a solid track team in up- coming seasons. Unfortunately, the 1973 season was hampered by the presence of only five veteran seniors. Returning lettermen Melvin Lawrence, Bob Pinckert, Marvin Stanley, and Ed White should prove to be the nucleus of the team. Four girls, Kari Stiegl itz, Patty Nowicki, Chris Nafe, and Chris Lanz, took advantage of the new IH- SAA ruUng and ran in practices. Coach Gavin comments that they should prove to be beneficial to the B-team. Girls Break Ranks of Track Team -j ; I From Row: Paula Fink and Debbie Pietrzak (mgrs.) John Grzegorek. Volleyball Spikes Out In IHSAA Premier The 1972 LaSalle High School Volley- ball Team ended with a disastrous win- loss record. This, however, is not a true indication of their season. For the first time volleyball has finally been recog- nized by the Indiana High School Ath- letic Association as a sport which has intra-school competition. This year the I.H.S.A.A. organized a state tourna- ment in which our girls competed, and volleyball is no longer to be treated as just an extra-curricular club. The girls on the Volleyball Team sweated out the practices coached by Miss Betty Mathews and then put their skill to use in the matches. The South Bend League in which LaSalle has competed was exceptionally tough; St. Joseph High School won the State Tourna- ment. The team captained by Barb Lakovits, was led by seniors Pat Bums, Cheryl Tobolski and Gwen Aldridge, and by juniors Jeni Matemowski, Pat Mazurkiewicz and Renee Taghon. The Team was much improved over last year ' s, especially in talent and skill. High spirit also prevailed on both B- team and Varsity which helped to com- pensate for an otherwise disappointing season. The B-team won several matches and is looking forward to a diff ' erent season next year— perhaps a winning one. Returning lettermen in- clude B-Team captain Monica Doyle, and Pat Mazurkiewicz. Below: Miss Betty Mathews, coach of the Volley- ball Team, leads the team in enthusiasm. For the first time in 6 years, LaSalle ' s Sealions have had a winning season. Not only did they end up with a fine 6- 3-1 record, but they placed 4th in both the City and Regionals and 1 1th in the State. There were eight girls who placed in the City. Nancy Walker was the only one to place first in the 100 and 50 yd. breast. Placing third were Georgann Walker, Nancy Walker, Becky Cerney, and Sue Nye in the me- dely relay. Marlene Sellers took a 4th in diving. Placing 6th were Cheri Chle- bowski. Deb Pietrzak, Sue Nye, and Georgann Walker. After qualifying in the regionals, two members went on to place in the State. Nancy Walker placed first in two events and is now the holder of two state records. Mar- lene Sellers brought home a 5th in div- ing. Both girls are sophomores. Due to a strong and unified team effort the Sealions have grown in size, talent and spirit. They dominated most of their meets and boosted their point average to 60 points per meet. Coach Susan Dominiak looks forward to an even greater season next year with only four graduating seniors this year. Combs were in constant view as sophomores strived to perfect images soon to be frozen for a year on film. Glassyeyed students walked around practicing smiles in front of display cases and admiring friends. Girls prayed they wouldn ' t have to swim that day for the sake of their hair and mascara— neither being water- proof English classes bubbled with im- patience as sophomores listened for the call to release them from captivity. Do you desire the thrill of own- ing a Boa Constrictor imported from Africa? If so. you are fortu- nate that South Bend has many fine stores which carr - the ordi- nary and also the unusual. La- SaUe is located near community shopping areas which also offer a wide variety of services and which employ many students from LaSalle. The local places of business such as the Portage Ave. shopping area and Brentwood Shopping Center always back the Lions and help create a unity of school and community. Their support and service helps also to create a genuine rapport between the local businesses and the school. When our local stores do not carry an item which you need immediately, then the downtown South Bend department stores are sure to provide you with this inacessible item. Prehaps it is that certain shade of ribbon or perhaps an Oriental rug that suits your needs. Future Plans- Work A Letter from the Editors The past year has really been hectic for us. Through the frustrations which al- ways accompany positions of responsi- bility we have done the best job that we could do. First we would like to thank the stu- dent body for their overwhelming re- sponse to the subscription drive. With over 950 subscriptions, the best in the history of LaSalle, and about $1000 worth of advertising, we feel this book has the total support of the entire stu- dent body. Many people don ' t realize all the strenuous work which goes into a year- book. Being on the staff isn ' t all fun and games; in fact, we can ' t think of any times that ever were! This yearbook is special to us because we have tried to say something. In most yearbooks the same people are always portrayed: the model student, the popular jock. This yearbook at- tempts to portray all types of students, from the person who makes the imme- diate transition into the working so- ciety to the college bound student. In the essays and the academic section this change is most predominant. We hope you will read the copy in this book because it was written for you. Many problems arose this year, some dealing within the staff, others con- cerning money, and of course the never ending pain of meeting deadlines. Whenever you get a group of people together you end up with a select few that do all the work. This is true of any organization, even the Lantern staff. It was difficult to keep from telling what was going into this book but .se- crecy is essential in order to have any element of surprise in a yearbook. We hope we have accomplished what we set out to do: put out an excellent yearbook.
