Sfudent Activities The Student Council worked to conquer the problems facing the school. They modified their system of representation to insure that any student interested in the working of student government could have a say in its running. The Student Council in a year long project, studied revisions which could be made to make the body a more effective tool for meeting the needs and wishes of the students. The Council continued to perform the many tasks expected of it. Representa- tives supervised the operation of the voting booth used in many of the school elections. They collected and distributed Christmas baskets for needy families in the LaSalle school district. The Council also planned the football homecoming ceremonies and participated in the annual City-Wide Student Council Exchange as well as an exchange with Central. Through the guidance of Mr. Moyer, the Student Council completed a year of active school leadership. Student Council officers; Barb Kawka, Leo West, Clenna Matthews, and Colleen Cates New Faces Brought New Ideas Filling food baskets are: David Gerard, Leo West, Karen Barna, and Kathy Tobolski 50 Julie Niezgodski, vice president, Karen Reason, secretary, Nancy Uldin, treasurer, Miss Bobin, sponsor, and Louise Hildebrand, president The Booster Club again succeeded in unifying the student body in sup- port of LaSalle ' s athletic teams. The Booster Club worked to bolster school spirit after the disappointment of for- feiting important basketball victories. Their efforts were crowned with the school ' s first sectional championship. Club members spent countless hours on the many projects so vital to the success of sporting events. Members painted and hung posters spurring the many teams to victories in their respective sports. They readied the teams and the student body for games by presenting pep as- semblies complete with Santa and his reindeer, devils, witches, and giant cakes. The Booster Club also worked hard to raise money for their many projects by selling pennants. During the sec- tional, the club solicited money for radio announcements backing the team. With the help of their sponsor, Miss Bobin, the Booster Club made the year one that LaSalle students will long remember. 51 Top Scholars Join N.H.S. Club members listened to numerous speakers who offered suggestions for erasing the barriers between men. Membership in the club meant committment to the ideals of world brotherhood both in school and out. In the spring, the Human Relations Club sponsored a pictori- al display in observance of Ameri- can Negro History Week. Under the guidance of Mr. Hendricks, the sponsor, the Human Relations Club had an active and successful year. With the expert advice of Mrs. Mathews, the Explorer staff always reported the news accurately and in good taste. Because the Explorer is a bi-weekly publication some of the news the Caper could report is already common nowledge. Therefore, the staff members Kept busy writing feature ar- ticles, conducting interviews and polls, and presenting their points of view on issues of importance to all students. The Explorer staff this year included the printers and composers who worked diligently all year to make the paper attractive and on time. The Lantern and Explorer benefit- ed from a photography staff which served both publications. Mr. Moriconi expertly handled the train- ing of new pnotographers in the tech- niques of photography and film Erocessing. The instruction provided y Mr. Moriconi made it possible for school photographers to take all of the photographs used in the Explorer and, for the first time, a majority of those in the yearbook. They were always enthusiastically received as they revealed their ability to sing songs ranging from spirituals to contemporary hits. Mr. Vogel again assembled a group of singers that displayed not only musical talent but poise and showmanship. Their ability is attested to by their popularity among the numerous civic clubs, or- ganizations, and churches. The stu- dents, who daily came to school at seven o ' clock in the morning, spent countless evenings practicing and per- forming. The student body ' s ovation for the group during the spring assem- bly was one of the most moving dem- onstrations of appreciation ever ac- corded a performing group at LaSalle. The LaSalle Singers performs with the glee club, band, and orchestra during their spring concert-assembly. 61 irin™ A Orchestra members: First row; Marlene Nagel, Howard Polay, Carol Widowski, Sheila Vaz, Eileen Letterman. In its first two or three years its num- bers were small. Now the orchestra nearly fills the stage when it performs. Much of the credit for its growth goes to Mr. Fisher whose enthusiasm and leadership inspired participation in the orchestra. Each orchestra member spent countless hours in practicing his instrument to make every orchestra performance a successful demonstra- tion of musical skill. Their skill was exhibited not only before the student body but before students at feeder schools. Their concert successes re- veal that LaSalle ' s Orchestra is a source of pride for LaSalle ' s student body, parents, and faculty. The numerous songs and for- mations performed at the games take countless hours of diligent practice. Numerous band members also per- formed in the Pep Band, one of La- Salle ' s most popular groups. Mr. Singleton, band director, and Mr. Norman, assistant band director, pro- vided excellent leadership and busily sought to exhibit the band ' s talent to the citizens of South Bend. The band performed in parades, before the stu- dent bodies of feeder schools, and in concert. Mr. Singleton deserves special credit for organizing the spring music assembly which, for the first time, fea- tured all of LaSalle ' s performing groups combining to entertain the student body. The score, 7-6, testifies that both Bishop Dwenger and LaSalle played tough football. LaSalle ' s lone touchdown was the result of a punt return of sixty yards by Mike Bowen, senior half- back. Bishop Dwenger came back late in the game, and, with a new rule that allows a team to run or pass for a two- point conversion, elected to run for the win. LaSalle ' s tenacious defense stopped the end sweep just short of the goal line. After years of trying, LaSalle finally beat the St. Joseph Indians by the sat- isfying score of 14-6. The Indians began the game like they owned the field, marching to a first quarter lead Quarterback Bill Welsheimer sidesteps a Marian defender. Lions Bounce Bock To Defeot Adams of 6-0. LaSalle was looking for a spark and Jim Hicks provided it with a leap- ing interception of an Indian pass, running it 22 yards for his first high school touchdown. Tom Gordon ' s conversion kick gave the Lions the lead for good. An insurance touch- down was set up by senior Greg Wil- trout ' s interception and, two plays later, scored by James Day on an eight yard run. Marian ' s Knights, on their way to an undefeated season and valley con- ference championship proved them- selves worthy of the title by trouncing the Lions 34-6. LaSalle ' s only bright spot was the development of a pass- ing attack that was lacking in the first two games. The only score was produced by a seventeen yard pass from senior quarterback Bill Wel- sheimer to Mike Bowen. Jackson dealt another conference loss, 19-0 to the Lions. The Jackson loss was the only shut-out recorded against the Lions. Jackson capitalized on seven LaSalle turnovers; all three of their touchdowns came after offen- sive mistakes by the Lions. James Day turned in another superlative per- formance, gaining 98 yards on 14 car- ries. The Lions recorded the first of their two season shut-outs against Adams. The Eagles were 28-0 victims of a LaSalle team that combined a power- ful and varied offense with a rugged defense. The Lions amassed an impressive total of 349 net yards gained. The first came after senior tackle Mark Jurgonski recovered a fumble deep in Eagle territory. The Bill Welsheimer hands to fullback Jerry Peterson against Clay. 76 Close Season With Consecutive Wins Kyle Harness, Kiwanis Award winner recovery set up a touchdown scored by Bill Welsheimer on a one yard sneak. Senior half-back James Day then shook loose for two scoring runs, one of 30 yards and the next 63 yards long. Day ended up with 143 yards on 18 carries. LaSalle ' s last touchdown was scored on a Bill Welsheimer to Mike Bowen pass that covered 42 yards. Adams began two drives late in the game but one was killed by junior Bruce Miller ' s interception, and the other was halted by senior tackle Kyle Harness ' fumble recovery. Penn, looking for an upset, took the opening kickoff to the LaSalle 30, where their attack stalled. Following the punt, Jim Day wasted no time in • r Mm f k. Lions size up the Riley defense. running 69 yards for a touchdown. Not wanting to be outdone, Bill Welsheimer scrambled 62 yards to a touchdown in the second quarter. One play after the kickoff Bruce Miller in- tercepted a Penn pass and returned it 21 yards to set up a scoring pass from Welsheimer to junior end Earl Hog- gard. Another junior end, Craig Foy stopped a third quarter Penn drive with an interception of a screen pass. Senior fullback Jerry Peterson pow- ered over from one yard out to close out the LaSalle scoring. Penn scored after a 61 yard drive in the fourth quarter and converted with two points. The final score was 25-8. Homecoming against Clay was a disappointment as Clay ' s Colonials formed a powerful ground attack that totaled 246 yards. After a scoreless first half, Clay drove 78 yards in 14 plays, scoring on a 6 yard pass. Clay ' s next score came after a LaSalle fumble Craig Foy sets to tackle a St. Joe ball carrier. on the 15 yard line. LaSalle finally got on the board with a pass by Bruce Miller to James Day that covered 80 yards. The final score was 14-6 in favor of the Colonials. Jim Day and senior fullback Jerry Peterson anchored the Lions victory over Riley ' s Wildcats. Day ran for 132 yards, scampered for 60 yards for a score, and set up another score with a 38 yard pass reception. Peterson, con- sistant throughout the season gained 63 yards, mostly on line bucks, and scored two touchdowns. Quarterback Bill Welsheimer passed five yards to Earl Hoggard for the other touch- down. The final score, 27-0, was the second shut-out of the year for the defense. The final game of the season saw LaSalle facing an out-of-state foe, the Bears of St. Joseph, Michigan. Neither offense could generate much of a drive in the first half, so LaSalle ' s defense once more provided the scor- ing spark, this time end Craig Foy scooped up a fumble and sprinted to the end zone untouched. St. Joe scored on a pass play, knotting the score at 7-7. In the second half, the Lions practised the ball-control method, not letting the Bears hold the ball long enough to start and sus- tain a drive. Bill Welsheimer ran 72 yards, the longest run of the year, for one touchdown and passed to Greg Wiltrout for another score. The Lion= finished the 1969 cam- paign with a fine record of six wins and three losses. Several members of 77 78 Mike Hockaday sheds an aggressive St. Joe defender. Gridders Start 6-3 Season With Two Wins the team were honored by being placed on the all-conference team. While the prospects for the 1970 season are bright, many members of the student body were disappointed by the resignation of Mr. Klaybor. His LaSalle teams established LaSalle as an area powerhouse. Mr. Murray, Mr. Vargo, and Mr. Gleason proved valu- able as assistant coaches. The LaSalle cross-country team, after losing Coach Hughes and Doug Snyder from the 1968 conference and city championship squad, came roar- ing back to post a 10-1 dual meet record, while achieving a 5-0 confer- ence mark. Coach Rzeszewski, assum- ing the reins after the first meet, skill- fully guided the X-men to nine vic- tories in ten meets. The season started out doubtfully as we beat Riley, but then dropped one to Elkhart That loss turned out to be the only one dur- ing the dual meet season as the Lion ' s won eight straight. The victory against Central 20-39, was the last meeting between the two rivals. Al- though there were no sweeps this season, the team threatened with a convincing smash of 15-48 against New Prairie and a 15-49 rout of St. Joseph. Jeff Wodrich, a senior co-captain, led the Lions to their second straight city championship. Dave Gerard, also a senior co-captain, played an impor- tant part in the teams title drive. Ray Kryzaniak, a junior, led the pack throughout the season and was in- strumental in the success of the squad. Rod Harlin, who consistantly finished near the top, completed the Fear- some Foursome. Seniors Ken Russell, Vern Shepherd, and Craig Barber made important contributions to the team. The nucleus for the 1970 team should consist of returning lettermen Alvin Armstrong, Bruce Cramer, Ron Dunham, Ray Kryzaniak, Larry Poz- gay, Lee Pozgay, and Tom Wodrich; and promising B-teamers Jeff Korros, and Jim Nafe. This year ' s squad also won the Penn Invitational meet and finished third in the City meet and third in the Sec- tional meet. The dual meet record was 7-2-1 with the only losses being Niles and Riley. This year ' s team had good depth, experience, and ability. Although there were individual stars, this was not a star-oriented team. James Day, one of four senior wres- tlers, was an individual standout win- ning the 157 pound Sectional, City, Conference, and Penn Invitational championships. Undefeated in Indi- ana dual meet competition, he had a season record of 18-1. Captain Vern Shepherd made the final round in the Sectional and had a season record of 11-6 wrestling in the 139 pound weight division. Senior Dan Maiuri wrestled in the 167 division and had a record of 10-5. Dan Harmon, also a senior, had a record of 7-5 before being injured. His 147 pound position on varsity was filled by junior John Rider. Rob Crowell was one of many out- standing juniors, winning Conference and Penn Invitational championships in the 177 pound class. Dave Rarryessa had an excellent 18-1 record with Conference and Penn Invitational championships in the 109 pound divi- sion. Farrell Wilson wrestled the lightest class, 100 pounds, and won the Conference championship in that class. Three other juniors won mono- grams and helped the team in winning valuable points. The three were; Rruce Cramer at 117 pounds, Greg Rodich at 132 pounds, and Jim Korpal at 187 pounds. John Powell at 125 pounds and Jim Lusk at Heavyweight were the two sophomore letter- winners. The Lions compiled a season record of 8- 15 but went on to win the school ' s first sectional crown. The first seven games saw the cagers win only three. The Lions, on occasion, lacked the teamwork that made them consistent winners later in the season. However, victories over strong Plymouth and Adams teams hinted that the Lions would be an area power. After a defeat at the hands of Riley in the Holiday Tournament, the clubs play confirmed expectations of suc- cess. The Lions roared to seven con- secutive victories. The wins included defeats of powerful Elkhart, rival Jackson, and a strong Riley team. However, news that LaSalle would have to forfeit seven of its victories, due to the use of an ineligible player, brought shock and disappointment to LaSalle boosters. The Lions reflected the let down as they narrowly escaped defeat at the hands of Marian. With disappointment still affecting their play, the powerful Michigan City Red Devils topped the Lions by forty points. Two more losses followed that defeat before the Lion ' s took the season finale with Breman to finish the season with a dismal 5-14 record. With the regular season a disap- pointment due to the forfeits and the effect they had on the teams play, few area fans expected LaSalle to be a Sectional contender. However, Coach Rensberger had inspired his team and they in turn inspired the student body. The Lions entered the first Sec- tional game with confidence and poise. In that game, the Lions over- powered a weak Washington team 83- 55. The Adams Eagles, in an overtime thriller, became the second Sectional victim of Lion Power. The cham- pionship game saw the Lions defeat an excellent St. Joseph team 59-57 as the school won its first Sectional crown. In the Regional, the Lions put up a valiant battle against the Michigan City Red Devils. The Lions lost to the powerful Red Devils by a mere six points. Steve Madison and AI Armstrong led the club in scoring with averages of nearly twenty points per game. Kevin Fitzgerald and Pat Magley were outstanding in rebounding and on defense. Dave Dalke was in- strumental in many of the LaSalle vic- tories. The bench provided valuable back-up men in Sammy Brown and Jeff Moritz. Ken Kuzmicz and Greg Urbanski helped nail down several games. Jim Nowicki, Andre Owens, and Walter Biggs gave LaSalle boost- ers three more good reasons to look forward to the 1970-71 season. 86 Varsity Team- First row; Mgr. Mike Gumkowski, Mgr. Seniors Add Strength It was a tough building year this season for the LaSalle Tankers. How- ever, outlooks for the future are bright with such strong swimmers as Ken Luzney, Mark Nye, Steve Fuller, Dan Miller, and Tom Stazewski. Coach Thompson ' s swim squad compiled a disappointing four-ten dual meet record with wins over Mishawaka, Central, Goshen and Michigan City. The swimmers finished a strong third in the conference meet and fourth in the LaPorte Invitational Relays. Their finish at LaPorte was aided by a championship breast stroke. Four school marks were set this year by seniors. Barry Gerard set records in the 50 yard freestyle event and in the 200 yard individual medley. Jim Wilson set a new mark in the 400 yard freestyle event while Harley Sellers established a new div- ing mark. 90 John Menyhart, senior swimmer Senior diver Larry Robertson Tankers Set Four New Records Diving Teams: Harley Sellers, Jim Kytta, Chuck Purucker, Larry Robertson, John Menyhart, Jim Wilson Sectional qualifier Barry Gerard Captain Jim Wilson LaSalle ... .41 Washington .... 54 LaSalle ... .43 Elkhart 52 LaSalle ... .49 Mishawaka 44 LaSalle 40 Riley 55 LaSalle ...59 Clay 36 LaSalle ...41 Adams 53 LaSalle 53 Michigan City . . 41 LaSalle 32 LaPorte 63 LaSalle ....45 Penn 50 LaSalle ... .44 Goshen 51 LaSalle ...51 Central 43 LaSalle ... .40 Culver Military . 55 LaSalle 47 Howe Military . . 48 LaSalle 37 Jackson 58 91 « if % Al - i ' v; £ •-. Balanced Squad Wins Eight Dual Meets This year ' s track squad was the epitome of balance. Only last year, the first place medals and blue ribbons would be heaped upon LaSalle ' s run- ners, while the meet would be lost for lack of depth. 1970 saw an exhibition of strong, gutty performers who never stopped until they had broken the tape. The pole vault is the first event begun and the last completed. In no less than three meets, the vaulters provided the winning points. With their last-minute wins over St. Joe, Adams, and Marian, Jack Merrill and Darwin Peterson often became the most relied upon athletes on the team. Al Armstrong, Sectional, Regional, Conference, and Goshen Relays Champion in the high jump, set a school record in that event when he jumped 6 ' 4% early in the season. Freshmen Rob Pinhert and Bernard Hill provided hope for the future and needed depth in this event. Armstrong also set a school record in the broad jump at 21 ' 2 . The other record-setter was also a field event man, senior Bob Gillen, who set a school record of 49 ' 7V2 in the shot put. In the middle distances, mile and half-mile, junior Ray Kryzaniak was counted upon for points and places in important meets. An able quarter-mile team of Randy Delanghe, Jeff Korros and Jon Williams often scored sweeps in that event and with Kryzaniak, formed the mile relay team. The two-mile squad, anchored by Dave Gerard and Jeff Wodrich was improved by the addition of Bill Welsheimer. The hurdle trio of Mike Bowen, John Glueckert, and Jim Wenzel provided many sweeps and each run- ner was able to beat the others on dif- ferent days. A squad of young sprinters filled the void that had existed for a year. Sprinters Ron Finnigan and Lonnie Hosea both lettered.
