ALAN BERMAN by Prof. Tuzyline Allan Once in a while individuals come along who dedicate their lives to improving the lot of their fellow human beings. Alan Berman was one such rare individual. As brilliant and professionally successful as he was, Alan. nevertheless, under-valued his own triumphs in order to serve those less fortunate. He was the epitome of the good teacher. one who transmits to his students the best that has been thought and known. At the same time. he encouraged them to feel confident about themselves and their OWn knowledge. With his colleagues, Alanawas equally inspiring, always ready with an approving word or smile. Alan loved conversation; however, he taught by example. His life was a showcase of paradoxes: a Harvard PhD. who was more concerned about his students' essays than publishing his own essays; a white male who scoffed at any privilege that designation is supposed to confer; a resident of Lawrence. one of the more affluent Long Island suburbs, who waged a one-man battle against greedy, insensitive landlords; a bachelor who spoke more lovingly of his mother and sister than any other woman he knew; a man who could and did teach others how to lead but was himself only too glad to follow. Alan felt comfortable with being humble. If he was able to reach many of us with that message, his life could not have been in vain. . ecrthe 2 ; straining forward wit , t i t ' hoarse and insiste i f V 'k g i ,4! 2.. tgHellbiLheedless of our; i ser selves, .7 ad i in all he quk ave us - ii 'gifroarthe political rk - . r .. he oily compr NE: - :A 5 ix opulent an- ' , -, swearing he saw, , up in Boston, i his lifets other ground, an unholy lightness in Anne Sexton's eyes ; that could only mean her suicide, ; K and laughing of the day t 7 a x: Patrick Kavanagh, ' that fierce old Irishman, 4 set the Harvard poets straight. Tra- ditionally, this event seems to come equipped with a wide range of emotions for our graduates and for those who touch their lives. Each student, each family member, each friend, each taculty member and administrator in attendance experiences feelings of pride and accomplishment in an individual manner. This particular Honors Night, however, all in the Theatre shared the same wave of emotional intensity as Dean Kenneth Cottrell gave the following testimonial for Dina Lapira, an award winner for the second year in a row . . . tiln late August, Dina lost her life in an automobile accident. One of Dina's last requests before she died was that her Mom would come to LaGuardia tonight to receive her award for outstanding academic achievement . . Before inviting Mrs. Lapira to the podium, Dean Cottrell paraphrased Ralph Waldo Emerson to describe Dina . . t ' tiTo laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better by having been a devoted daughter, a loving sister, and a dedicated student; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. 0-0 Dean Kenneth Cottrell, Diva and Lourdes Lapira, Carlos Alvarez. Steve Dauz, and President Joseph Shenker reflect on the memory 01 ' a devoled daughter, a lovmg sister and a dedicated student. UDIV8 Lapira also recewed an award for Academic Achievemeno. 69 K $K JOSEPH SHENKER PRESIDENT What challenges have you faced here at LaGuardia Community College? Trying to meet the needs of the students as we look into the future and not on a dayeto-day basis. If we can deal with the problems that students will face in the future, then we have anticipated the day-to-day issues. For exam- ple, we look to develop new curriculumsy new programs so our students will have more ex- citing job opportunities when they graduate. It involves working to provide financial resources for the College so we can hire new. exciting faculty, and trying to keep up with the space needs of our growing population by projects such as the takeover of the Equitable Paper Bag Company. How would you like to be remembered? I would like the College to be remembered for having given students an opportunity to perform their own personal ambitions. that the institution made a difference in their lives: their economic life and their view of society and their view of themselves as an important part of the citizens of New York. l would like to know that LaGuardia helped them in the fulfillment of what they can be as individuals. WILLIAM HAMILTON DEAN OF STUDENTS What message do you have for our graduates? I once had a student come to me and tell me HProfessor Hamilton, I'm going to be 40 by the time I graduate! l said l'You are going to be 40 anyway. It's better to be 40 and have a degree to do something with. If the students persevere and develop good study habits, they can make it. How would you like to be remembered? As someone who helped them get over the hurdles and as someone who was there when they were in need. 9 8 iiiiiiiiiiii .t 9,! 14 x ff: g .1 E- e g s: i; x MARTIN MOED VICE-PRESIDENT What challenges have you faced here at LaGuardia Community College? Helping more students succeed by meet- ing the standards of the school. I feel that every student that wants to graduate should be able to graduate. What message do you have for our grade uates? I hope that the graduates would think of LaGuardia not as a place they passed on their way to somewhere but as a place that really had an impact on their lives and where they were treated well, learned well and feel that they achieved what they wanted. EUGENIE WHITE PRESIDENT, STUDENT GOVERNMENT What message do you have for our grad- uates? I wish them lots otsuccess in all their en- deavorst How would you like to be remembered? As someone who had no prior knowledge or experience in representing students' interest. but yet did her best. 71 72 These LaGuardia students have overcome many challenges to reach this goal.
