LAGUARDIA By Sandra Bradley and Kevin Riley of Student Activities - Fiorello Henry LaGuardia was born on December 1 l, 1882. in New York City. Before he was elected mayor, he practiced law and was active in local Republican politics. Florello also served as Deputy Attorney General of New York State from 1915-1917. His first marriage was in March of 1919 to Thea Almerigotti. who died only two years later. But with Fiorello's zeal and charisma, it wasn't long before he tell in love and married the present Marie LaGuardia. The happily married couple adopted their two children, Jean Marie and Eric LaGuardia Mr. LaGuardia was elected mayor successively for three lour-year terms, beginning in 1933. While in office, he accomplished much that still exists today; for example, the construction and opening of the Central Park Zoo, Public Housing, Childcare Health Services. He supervised the New York Worlds Fair in 1939. Mayor LaGuardia also had 492 modern playgrounds built so the children of the city could play safely and in beautiful environments. Mayor LaGuardia, in consonance with his hard work and dedication, loved kids and always allowed time for attention to their needs. During the paper strike in the summer of 1945, the greatly loved mayor took time to read the comics over the radio for all his waiting listeners - not just the kids. He would begin with, Gather round children, and I will tell you about Dick Tracy. No doubt. Fiorello H. LaGuardia was one of the greatest men of his and maybe all time. He was a humanitarian who loved and cared about people, their cultures, aspirations and rights as humans. We appreciate and commemorate him for all he did to make this world a better place. Here at LaGuardia Community College. we will always remember and practice Mayor LaGuardia's ideals: peace, love, equality, freedom and prosperity. Fiorello means Little Flower , but LaGuardia left a garden of perennial bulbs that bloom in the form of students and citizens of goodwill in New York City.
